French voyages of exploration and science in the Age of Enlightenment: an ocean of discovery throughout the Pacific Ocean ArchiMer
Melguen, Marthe.
A time when France, as well as Great Britain, had a very ambitious maritime policy, the La Pérouse expedition was the only maritime expedition conceived, designed and followed at a national level by the King himself, Louis XVI. The excellence of the Expedition's preparation and of its importance in terms of scientific results, the exceptional concern of La Pérouse in the fields of data gathering and transmission, his very high quality as captain of a global expedition, made it a remarkable achievement, despite its disastrous end.

The hydroid fauna of Tasmanian seamounts Naturalis
Watson, J.E.; Vervoort, W..
Seventy seamounts 50 to 100 km off South East Cape, southern Tasmania, rise from depths of 1000- 2000 m on the Australian continental slope. Sampling of the slopes of 14 seamounts was undertaken in 1997 by the Australian Commonwealth Scientific & Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO). The collection yielded 14 species of hydroids, six of which are new, including two species of a new genus. Only Halecium fragile Hodgson, 1950, and Tripoma arboreum Hirohito, 1995, have previously been recorded from Tasmania. Other species are known from deep water off New Zealand, Japan and the south-western Atlantic.

The Impacts of Attribute Level Framing and Changing Cost Levels on Choice Experiments Value Estimates AgEcon
Kragt, Marit Ellen; Bennett, Jeffrey W..
Choice Experiments (CE) are increasingly used to estimate the values of environmental goods and services. CE questionnaires represent the environmental good under valuation by varying levels of non-market attributes. Inclusion of a cost attribute enables the estimation of monetary values for changes in the non-market attributes presented. The ways in which the levels of the attributes are described in the survey - the ‘attribute frame’ - may affect respondents’ choices. Furthermore, varying levels of the cost attribute may impact CE value estimates. The challenge for CE practitioners is to identify the ‘appropriate’ attribute frames and cost levels. In this paper, the impacts of changing cost levels and the impacts of describing non-market attributes as...

Developing a Questionnaire for Valuing Changes in Natural Resource Management in the George Catchment, Tasmania AgEcon
Kragt, Marit Ellen; Bennett, Jeffrey W..
review, expert interviews, biophysical modelling and focus group discussions were used to design a Choice Modelling (CM) questionnaire. This questionnaire was used to value changes in natural resource management in the George catchment, Tasmania. This report describes the questionnaire development, the selection of George catchment attributes and the assessment of attribute levels. The (experimental) design and delivery of the questionnaire are also presented.

Using Choice Experiments to value River and Estuary Health in Tasmania with Individual Preference Heterogeneity AgEcon
Kragt, Marit Ellen; Bennett, Jeffrey W..
Choice experiments (CE), also known as choice modelling (CM), are now used widely in environmental valuation in Australia. Many examples assess the trade-offs between river catchment management and socio-economic impacts. There is, however, limited information about the values of Australian estuaries and none of the existing valuation studies addresses catchment management changes in Tasmania. The CE study described in this report aims to elicit community preferences for protecting the rivers and estuary of the George catchment in north-eastern Tasmania. Results from conditional and mixed logit models show that respondents are, on average, willing to pay between $2.47 and $4.46 for a one kilometre increase in native riverside vegetation, and between...
