Taxing sugar-sweetened beverages has been proposed as a means to reduce calorie intake, improve diet and health, and generate revenue that governments can use to address the obesity-caused health and economic burden. Two beverage demand systems were estimated using beverage purchase data for high-income and low-income households. Using the estimated demand elasticities we examined the impacts of a hypothetical 20-percent effective tax rate (or about 0.5 cent per ounce) on beverage consumption, calorie intake, tax revenue and burden. Our results suggest that such a tax would induce an average reduction of 35 and 41 calories a day among adults and children, respectively. RESUMEN: El objetivo de este estudio es analizar la respuesta diferenciada del consumo de bebidas alcohólicas de las distintas regiones españolas ante cambios en los precios y la renta y simular las consecuencias de una variación del tipo de los impuestos especiales sobre bebidas alcohólicas. Para ello se han estimado las elasticidades renta y precio de tres tipos de bebidas alcohólicas (vino, cerveza y "otras bebidas alcohólicas") a través de un sistema completo de demanda tipo AIDS, utilizando un panel de datos anuales entre 1993 y 2000 para ocho grandes regiones españolas. The lignite energy industry of North Dakota has become a significant force in the state's economy since the energy crisis of the 1970s. Key economic measures of the industry's contribution to the state's economy have been estimated annually since 1982. Industry expenditures peaked in 1995 at $543.8 million, excluding the early 1980s when significant plant expansion was occurring. Annual expenditures have been over $400 million since the early 1990s and were $464.9 million in 1998, the most recent year of the analysis.
