After the enumeration of hétérotrophie bacteria from mediterranean and atlantic lagoons water and sediment by means of cultural methods, the qualitative study of each bacteria is carried on with the help of the API 20 B standardized microbiological method. The distinctive characteristics of bacteria of each communities are coded so that to build matrix of binary data. The grouping of bacteria is realized by means of both linnean systematic and numerical taxonomy. The communities structure they constitute found expression in a systematic dominance index (D2), a Shannon taxonomic regularity index (J) and a "functionnal" regularity index (E). To have a better description and interpretation of the main ecological features of bacterial communities, it seems... |

Numeration, biomass, distribution within time, some physiological characters and a taxonomical outline, with a standardized micro method, of aerobic hétérotrophie bacteria isolated from sediments an waters, from fishponds of "Domaine de Certes" (Arcachon) from june 1977 to may 1978 are described. Number of hétérotrophie bacteria evolved in a significant way, according to seasons, and bacterial biomass is higher in the sediments than in the waters. Metabolic or physiological differences (proteolysis, denitrification) appeared among populations due to the origin of sediments. Moreover the qualitative study pointed out taxonomical units as Bacillus associated to seasons, or Agrobacterium associated to vegetable detritical sediments. |

As the emergence of new vibriosis in the European Atlantic coasts has been associated with mass mortalities of molluscs cuasing important economic losses, the project obectives are to provide knowledge and operational tools to evaluate the impact of vibriosis on farmed japenese oyster Crassostrea gigas. Facing the diversity of Vibrio species associated to bivalve disease outbreaks, the difficulties of identification and the detemrination of their pathogenic abilities we propose a double approach to correlate phenotype/geneotype of a bacteria with risk of disease : 1) by genotyping we will evaluate if specific strains are associated with disease. 2) by evaluating likely virulence mechanisms implicated in pathogenesis, we will characterise the genes... |

Despite the economic importance of numerous oyster species throughout the world, our knowledge of their systematics and phylogeography remains fragmentary. In Europe, the indigenous species, Ostrea edulis, suffered overexploitation as well as two successive parasitosis over the last century. However, this species is still cultivated in Europe, and especially in Spain and France. Its distribution area stretches from the Atlantic coasts of Europe to the north of Africa as well as around the Mediterranean and Black Sea. Its Mediterranean and South Atlantic distribution area is shared with another indigenous species, the dwarf oyster, Ostreola stentina. Its very small adult size (a few centimetres) makes its culture pointless from a commercial point of view.... |

The Census of marine life programme (CoML) is expected to generate a large amount of information on the diversity, distribution, and abundance of marine communities, many of them new or poorly known. Institutions such as natural history museums can play a crucial role in providing the necessary tools to allow the CoML to advance knowledge in the fields of marine systematics and biogeography. These institutions can contribute taxonomic expertise to provide quality-controlled identifications of species; specimen collections to allow for cross-checking of occurrences and a historical context for new data; information, both paper and electronic, on taxonomy, ecology and other topics to enable researchers to review past work; education opportunities to inform... |

Three new ostracod genera: Humphreyscandona n. gen., Pilbaracandona n. gen., and Notacandona n. gen., and nine new species are described from subterranean waters of the Pilbara Region, Western Australia. They belong to the subfamily Candoninae of the order Podocopida, and are characterized by a 5-segmented antennula and ornamented carapace. Humphreyscandona n. gen. contains five species, all with reduced posterior furcal claw and prominent external lobe on hemipenis. The other new genera each contain two species. Pilbaracandona n. gen. is also characterized by a reduced posterior furcal claw, but can be separated from the previous genus by the chaetotaxy of the antennula, mandibula, and general appearance of the hemipenis. Notacandona n. gen. is separated... |

The springtail Isotomurus maculatus new to the fauna of the Netherlands (Insecta: Collembola) Isotomurus maculatus (Schäffer, 1896) is a southern European springtail, which is recorded here as new for the fauna of the Netherlands. Specimens were collected on five sites in different regions of the Netherlands. The sites, a garden, a roadside verge and a lane with trees can be characterised as synatropic with a large degree of disturbance. In northern Europe Isotomurus maculatus is a eurytopic species that colonises ruderal sites very quickly. This conclusion is based on the description of the sites and the ecology of species collected together with I. maculatus. The distribution in Europe and the taxonomy of the species is described. It is argued that I.... |

Athalia longifoliae is removed from synonymy with A. circularis and is upgraded to the species level from A. circularis ssp. longifoliae. The species is recorded for the first time for the Netherlands (19 localities) and for Germany (one locality). Differences between A. longifoliae and A. circularis are described and some notes on the ecology of A. longifoliae are given. In the Netherlands A. longifoliae was found only in a few limited areas where its host, Veronica longifolia grows, whereas A. circularis is common throughout the Netherlands. As both taxa occur within the same geographical area, do not interbreed and occupy their own ecological niche, these is no reason to treat A. longifoliae as a subspecies of A. circularis. |

In the last decades, Van der Meijdenʼs editions of the Heukels’ Flora recognized only a single taxon in the 'Bolboschoenus maritimus group’ for the Netherlands: Bolboschoenus maritimus (L.) Palla, formerly known as Scirpus maritimus L. This is probably because the previously recognized infraspecific taxa were solely based on inflorescence architecture. These characters, however, vary between and within populations, and even within clones or individuals. However, in Central Europe the study of a new character, pericarp morphology, resulted in new insights in the taxonomy of the ‘Bolboschoenus maritimus group’. A species new to science, B. laticarpus Marhold, Hroudová, Ducháček & Zákr., has been reported to occur in the Netherlands as well. In this... |

Review of the genus Psilota in the Netherlands (Diptera: Syrphidae) A review of the genus Psilota in the Netherlands is presented. It is demonstrated that the genus is represented by a complex of two species, Psilota anthracina Meigen, 1822 and P. atra (Fallén, 1817), as already indicated by Kassebeer. Both species can be separated using the key provided below. The interpretation of the species is exactly opposite to that in recent literature. Unfortunately, the holotype of P. atra Fallén was lost during transport. Therefore, we designate a neotype, again a male from Sweden (fig. 6). Our interpretation of the species is based on this neotype and the description and pictures of P. anthracina by Meigen. The habitats of both species in the Netherlands... |
