GMOs and organic agriculture: Six lessons from Australia Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
GMO moratoria are in place in Australia, in some states and not in others. Is co-existence possible between organic farming and GMO farming? And if so, under what circumstances? Australia has more certified organic land than any other country, with a reported 12.0 million hectares of certified organic land compared to the world total of 37.5 million hectares. In a recent court case, an organic farmer lost his organic certification because of GMO contamination. A total of 325 hectares of his 478 hectare farm were contaminated with GM canola blown from a neighbouring property, and this resulted in the decertification of most of the farm. The organic farmer sued his neighbour, a GMO farmer, on the basis of nuisance or negligence, he sought damages for loss of...

Co-production of ethanol, biogas, protein fodder and natural fertilizer in organic farming – evaluation of a concept for a farm-scale biorefinery Organic Eprints
Oleskowicz-Popiel, Piotr; Kádár, Zsófia; Heiske, Stefan; Klein-Marcuschamer , D.; Simmons, Blake A.; Blanch, Harvey W.; Schmidt, Jens Ejbye.
The addition of a biorefinery to an organic farm was investigated, where ethanol was produced from germinated rye grains and whey, and the effluent was separated into two streams: the protein-rich solid fraction, to be used as animal feed, and the liquid fraction, which can be co-digested with clover grass silage to produce biogas. A method for ethanol production from rye was applied by utilizing inherent amylase activity from germination of the seed. Biogas potential of ethanol fermentation effluent was measured through anaerobic digestion trials. The effluent from the trials was assumed to serve as natural fertilizer. A technoeconomic analysis was also performed; total capital investment was estimated to be approximately 4 M USD. Setting a methane...

Opportunities and challenges for multicriteria assessment of food system sustainability Organic Eprints
Alrøe, Hugo Fjelsted; Moller, Henrik; Læssøe, Jeppe; Noe, Egon.
The focus of the Special Feature on “Multicriteria assessment of food system sustainability” is on the complex challenges of making and communicating overall assessments of food systems sustainability based on multiple and varied criteria. Four papers concern the choice and development of appropriate tools for making multicriteria sustainability assessments that handle built-in methodological conflicts and trade-offs between different assessment objectives. They underscore the value of linking diverse methods and tools, or nesting and stepping their deployment, to help build resilience and sustainability. They conclude that there is no one tool, one framework, or one indicator set that is appropriate for the different purposes and contexts of...

Marsh v Baxter, Kojonup to Canberra: Foresight, Hindsight and Insight Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
Australia is a global leader in organic production and a minnow in global GMO production. Organic produce consistently sells at a premium, while genetically modified (GM) produce consistently sells at a discount. In the case of Marsh and Baxter, the facts were agreed but their interpretation was not and this proved fatal to the case. This was a dispute between two farmer neighbours at Kojonup, Western Australia. When the GMO moratorium was lifted in WA, Baxter promptly planted Monsanto GM canola along his border with his organic neighbour. Marsh had previously warned Baxter that the organic certification of the Marsh farm was at risk if it was contaminated by an incursion of GM canola. The foreseen incursion eventuated and the certifier (NASAA) withdrew...

Biogas and Bioethanol Production in Organic Farming Organic Eprints
Oleskowicz-Popiel, Piotr.
The consumer demand for environmentally friendly, chemical free and healthy products, as well as concern regarding industrial agriculture’s effect on the environment has led to a significant growth of organic farming. On the other hand, organic farmers are becoming interested in direct on‐farm energy production which would lead them to independency from fossil fuels and decrease the greenhouse gas emissions from the farm. In the presented work, the idea of biogas and bioenergy production at the organic farm is investigated. This thesis is devoted to evaluate such a possibility, starting from the characterization of raw materials, through optimizing new processes and solutions and finally evaluating the whole on‐farm biorefinery concept with the help of a...

A general extrudate bulk density model for both twin-screw and single-screw extruder extrusion cooking processes Organic Eprints
Cheng, Hongyuan; Friis, Alan; Høeg Hansen, Jonas; Tolderlund Rasmussen, Hanne.
Effects of extrusion parameters and raw materials on extrudate expansion are respectively investigated in a twin-screw extruder and a single-screw extruder extrusion cooking experiments for fish feed, wheat, and oat & wheat mixture processing. A new phenomenological model is proposed to correlated extrudate bulk density, extrusion parameters and raw material changes based on the experimental results. The average absolute deviation (AAD) of the correlation is 2.2% for fish feed extrusion in the twin-screw extrusion process. For the single-screw extrusion process, the correlation AAD is respectively 3.03%, 5.14% for wheat and oat & wheat mixture extrusion; and the correlation AAD is 6.6% for raw material change effects. The correlation results...

Concepts for a multi-criteria sustainability assessment of a new more biobased economy in rural production landscapes Organic Eprints
Dalgaard, Tommy; Jørgensen, Uffe; Kristensen, I.T.; Gylling, M.; Dejgaard, J.; Dubgaard, Alex; Kjeldsen, Chris; Hermansen, J.E.; Turner, K.G.; Christen, Ben; Andersen, P.S..
This study presents a new approach to model the biophysical potentials for increased biomass harvest in Denmark, and a multi-criteria sustainability assessment of the socio-economic and environmental effects of different scenarios for such increased production and new biobased economy in rural landscapes. Thereby the results serve as input to the ongoing productivism – post-productivism debate related to rural spaces in Europe. Empirical results from a case study of large scale conversion to biorefenery technologies, aiming to increase the total Danish harvest of biomass by 10 million tonnes via the conversion to new types of crop production and land management, is used as an example, and will be related to the common conceptual model presented by the...

Is automatic milking acceptable in organic dairy farming? Quantification of sustainability indicators Organic Eprints
Oudshoorn, F.W.; de Boer, I.J.M..
The objective of this research, was to quantify sustainability indicators of organic dairy farms using Automatic Milking Systems (AMS), and a comparative group of organic dairy farms using conventional milking systems (CMS). Milk yield per cow was higher for AMS farms but did not result in higher net return to management. Nitrogen surplus per ha of available land was higher for AMS farms, Animal health was unaffected by AMS use, as also most milk quality aspects; somatic cell count, clostridium spores and urea. Acid degree value (ADV), measured as free fatty acids (FFA) in the milk, was higher in milk from AMS users. Labour time was decreased by almost 50% for AMS users, to 2.3 min/cow/day. It could be concluded from quantification of selected indicators...

Fruits and Vegetable environmental impacts - Life Cycle Assessment Organic Eprints

Biofuels on organic farming Organic Eprints
Kádár, Zsófia; Christensen , Anne Deen; Oleskowicz-Popiel, Piotr; Heiske, Stefan; Thomsen , Mette Hedegaard; Schmidt, Jens Ejbye.
Organic agriculture is one sustainable alternative to avoid negative environmental effects often caused by conventional agriculture. The area for organic farming in Europe is increased rapidly in the last decades and Denmark is one of the top-ten countries in Europe as regards the organic share of the total cultivated area. The production of bioenergy from local biological resources and the maintenance of soil fertility seem to have been opposing aims in organic agriculture. In organic farming, there is a strong effort to reduce the reliance on fossil fuels and decrease greenhouse gas emissions in organic agriculture. Cheese whey is a by-product from the dairy industry, which has the highest market share of organic foods in Denmark. It generates...

Sustainability assessment and complementarity Organic Eprints
Alrøe, Hugo Fjelsted; Noe, Egon.
Sustainability assessments bring together different perspectives that pertain to sustainability to produce overall assessments, and a wealth of approaches and tools have been developed in the past decades. However, two major problems remain. The problem of integration concerns the surplus of possibilities for integration; different tools produce different assessments. The problem of implementation concerns the barrier between assessment and transformation; assessments do not lead to the expected changes in practice. We aim to analyze issues of complementarity in sustainability assessment and transformation as a key to better handling the problems of integration and implementation. Based on a generalization of Niels Bohr’s complementarity from quantum...
