Spawning of migratory fish species between two reservoirs of the upper Uruguay River, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Reynalte-Tataje,David A.; Nuñer,Alex P. O.; Nunes,Michele C.; Garcia,Valquíria; Lopes,Carolina A.; Zaniboni-Filho,Evoy.
This study investigated the migratory fish spawning within the reservoirs of the Machadinho and Itá dams (upper Uruguay River, Brazil) and its relationship to environmental variables. Sampling was conducted in the lotic region of the river in two sites between the dams' reservoirs: Uruguay (main river) and Ligeiro (tributary). Sampling included nine consecutive reproductive periods (RP) spanning the period from 2001 to 2010 and was conducted at night on the water surface using cylindrical-conical plankton nets (0.5 mm mesh); environmental variables were also recorded. The spawning of the migratory species Salminus brasiliensis, Prochilodus lineatus, and Steindachneridion scriptum was registered: S. brasiliensis and P. lineatus spawned in the tributary...

Postlarvas y juveniles de camarones Farfantepenaeus spp y Xiphopenaeus kroyeri en la Boca de la Barra (Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta), Caribe colombiano OceanDocs
López, A.C.; García, C.B..
Postlarvae and juveniles of Farfantepenaeus spp. and Xiphopenaeus kroyeri were collected at Boca de la Barra (Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta), by means of a channel net that orientates with the tide. Sampling was carried out every two weeks for ayear (February 1998 – February 1999), so that each sampling date corresponded to full and new moon alternatively. Farfantepenaeus spp. postlarvae tended to appear in the dry season and with significantly greater abundance during full moon (Mann-Whitney test, P<0.05). Juveniles showed a different pattern: there were significant differences between seasons (Mann-Whitney test, P< 0.05) with higher concentrations in the rainy season, but not so between moon phases (Mann-Whitney test, P>0.05). In the case of X....

Variabilite de la distribution spatio-temporelle du poulpe (octopus vulgaris) le long des côtes de Mauritanie OceanDocs
Inejih, C.A.O.; Quiniou, L.; Dochi, T..

Polyplacophora (Mollusca) from reef ecosystems and associations with macroalgae on the Coast of Alagoas, Northeastern Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Correia,Monica Dorigo; Coelho,Catarina Alves; Sovierzoski,Hilda Helena.
ABSTRACT Brazilian marine molluscs, especially Gastropoda and Bivalvia, are relatively well studied. However, information on the class Polyplacophora is more scarce, particularly on reef-dwelling forms. This study aimed to qualitatively and quantitatively analyze aspects of polyplacophorans from reef ecosystems and their associations with macroalgae on the coast of Maceió (state of Alagoas, Brazilian Northeast). The study area included five coral reefs at Ipioca, Ponta do Prego, Ponta do Meirim, Riacho Doce and Ponta Verde, as well as two sandstone reefs, located in Guaxuma and Sereia. The samples were obtained by snorkelling along the intertidal and subtidal reef zones to a depth of up to five meters during low tides, between 2009 and 2011. In addition,...

Occurrence of Macrobrachium amazonicum (Heller) (Decapoda, Palaemonidae) in Leopoldo's inlet (Ressaco do Leopoldo), upper Paraná River, Porto Rico, Paraná, Brazil Zoologia
Bialetzki,Andréa; Nakatani,Keshiyu; Baumgartner,Gilmar; Bond-Buckup,Georgina.
Studies on the occurrence, temporal distribution and nychthemeral variation of Macrobrachium amazonicum (Heller, 1862) were undertaken in Leopoldo's Inlet, upper Paraná River, Porto Rico, Paraná, Brazil. Seventeen thousand and sixty specimens (11,786 larvae and 5,274 juveniles) were captured with a conicalcylindrical plankton net of mesh 0.5mm in monthly samples between February 1991 and February 1992. Results show that the greatest densities of larvae (301.83 larvae/10m³) and juveniles (168.8/10m³) of this species were caught in December 1991. Largest captures were made during the night. With regard to abiotic factors water temperature ranged from 20º to 30ºC, pH ranged from 5.66 to 7.37 and electric conductivity ranged from 51.83 to 65.33µS/cm....

Use of space and temporal distribution of Trichechus manatus manatus Linnaeus in the region of Sagi, Rio Grande do Norte State, Brazil (Sirenia, Trichechidae) Zoologia
Paludo,Danielle; Langguth,Alfredo.
The marine manatee Trichechus manatus manatus Linnaeus, 1758 is endangered in the Brazilian Atlantic coast due to indiscriminate hunting practiced in the past, and to the low reproductive rate of the species. This work studies its use of space and temporal occurrence in the coastal area of Sagi, Northeastern Brazil. Daily observations from the beach of the animals in the sea were made during daytime from 1990 through 1993. The presence of reefs covered with marine algae is a determinant factor in the occurrence of the manatee. They were sighted feeding on algae that grow over the reefs close to beaches that were of high energy during high tide. The range used by manatees shifted according to tide. They occur in depths of 0.4 to 3.8 m; the distance from the...

Ascidians at Currais islands, Paraná, Brazil: taxonomy and distribution Biota Neotropica
Rocha,Rosana Moreira da; Faria,Suzana Barros de.
The Currais Islands is a group of a few small rocky islands in the state of Paraná, in southern Brazil, which provides an interesting location for the study of ascidians. Subtidal diversity is very high and the islands have recently been proposed as a Conservation Unit. A field study was established on the largest island to understand ascidian distributions on spatial and temporal scales. Transects, sampled three times during 2002 and 2003, were established on northern and southern locations of the island as well as at three depths. Twenty species were recorded; the most common were Didemnum rodriguesi, Didemnum speciosum and Didemnum granulatum. Three species are possibly new and will be described elsewhere. An additional nine are new records for the...

Population dynamics of Pseudevadne tergestina (Branchiopoda: Onychopoda) in Guanabara Bay, Brazil BABT
Marazzo,Andrea; Valentin,Jean Louis.
Populations of Pseudevadne tergestina were studied in Guanabara Bay, southeastern Brazil, to assess temporal variations in density and population dynamics. Data on temperature, salinity and zooplankton samples were taken from the superficial water of a fixed station, every 3 - 4 days, from February 2 through August 1, 2000. The highest abundance of this species was observed in March, when densities varied widely, from 20 to 600 ind. m-3. Population parameters were calculated, such as birth rate (from 0.25 to 0.90 ind.-1.day-1), growth rate (from -1.30 to 2.09 day-1 ) and death rate ( from -1.6 to 1.9 day-1 ) Start of population could be attributed to the increase of temperature and to the hatching of resting eggs. The population collapsed in fall-winter,...
