Abstract Populations that breed along steep elevation gradients show diverse physiological and morphological changes in response to the different environmental conditions. The latter has been discussed by Bergmann’s and Allen’s ecogeographic rules about body and appendage sizes and environmental temperature. We compared morphometric measures (mass, bill width, tarsus, wing, and tail length) of a Zonotrichia capensis population in two localities at different elevations with similar latitudes and photoperiods on the western slope of the Colombian Central Andes. We compared a Low Elevation locality (LE) at 1800 m a.s.l. and a High Elevation locality (HE) at 3853 m a.s.l. that have approximate wind speeds of 1.3 m/s and 8.4 m/s, respectively. During 12 months... |

The home range of the Tropidurid lizard Liolaemus lutzae, an endemic species of the costal sand dune habitats of Rio de Janeiro State, was studied in the beach habitat of Barra de Maricá restinga, Maricá County. Home ranges were studied using a mark-recapture technique in a delimited area at the beach habitat. I considered for estimates and analysis the home ranges of those lizards with a minimum of four positions. The size of L. lutzae home ranges varied according to the segment of the population. The mean home range size of adult males (x = 59.8 ± 33.7 m²) was significantly larger than that of adult females (x = 22.3 ± 16.1 m²). Juvenile mean home range size was significantly smaller than that of adult males, but did not differ from that of adult females... |

This work is the product of a long process that tried to approximate the principia involved in sustainable agriculture in an attempt to analyze it. We believe that these principia are crucial for the systematic, rigorous, and consistent development of sustainable agriculture. The unifying concepts of agriculture sustainability are classified into seven fundamental principies: (i) there is a hierarchy in decision-making with respect to human actions on the landscape and environment; (ii) human impact on the land should be analyzed from different perspectives (local, global, anthropocentric, and ecocentric); (iii) the carrying capacity in an agrarian context is crucial to ecosystem management and design; (iv) humans arrange nature with little consideration... |

We evaluated several factors that might be related to the home-range size of felids at both inter and intraspecific levels. At the interspecific level, we tested the influence of body mass on home range size of 19 felid species, while controlling for phylogeny. At the species level, we evaluated the effect of sex and habitat type (open vs. closed) on the home range size of three species of felids occurring in America, Panthera onca, Leopardus pardalis and Puma concolor, which are among the most studied species concerning home ranges. Body mass, sex, and home range data were extracted from the Pantheria database (for 19 species, for interspecific comparisons) and from 48 studies for intraspecifc comparisons. We assessed the influence of body mass on the... |

The question addressed in this article focuses on the conditions for strengthening the territorial character of tourist attractions around a fishing port with a strong identity. In the face of the depletion of resources, the territories dependent on the exploitation of living marine resources try reconversions during the 1990s, especially towards tourism. The article is based on the fishing port of Guilvinec on which has been created an exhibition center for a large audience. The survey methodology is mobilized to delimit the territory on which the fishing activities and the exhibition center are attractive. An estimate of the expenses incurred by visitors is proposed. The tourist’s consumption of the exhibition center and fisheries is in line with the... |

Beyond the technical and technological advances in the conversion of marine by-products into useful products, the territorial, economic, social, political and environmental parameters, which govern all forms of approaches for fish by-products upgrading, must be taken in account. This is essential to understand why and how bioconversion technologies are applicable. The fishery sector is facing several issues such as fish stocks weakening, recourse to imports, aquaculture rising or consumers behaviors which complicate the approach of fish by-products upgrading as it is linked to the raw material processing. Thanks to some projects addressed this thematic in recent years, several quantitative and qualitative data about by-products deposits are available.... |

This study provides a detailed description of the arteries supplying the soft palate via: (i) ascending palatine; (ii) tonsillar; (iii) ascending pharyngeal; and (iv) lesser palatine arteries. Detailed dissections were performed on each side of thirty fetal and twenty adult head and neck specimens (n=100). This investigation documents the arteries terminating at the respective parts (superior, middle and inferior) of the soft palate and demonstrated that the majority of arteries terminated at the superior (83%) and middle (63%) parts, whereas the inferior part (34%) was documented to receive the poorest arterial supply. The present study recognized anastomotic connections in 6% of fetal specimens i.e. (i) between the ascending palatine and lesser palatine... |

A mikroöntözés alkalmazásával, azonos vízmennyiséggel kétszer akkora terület öntözhető. Retardált (fékezett lebomlású) műtrágyák... |

Polythoridae comprise a widespread group of species in the New World tropics, but little is known about their behavior or life history. Here, we described the reproductive behavior of Amazonian Chalchopteryx rutilans, using mark-recapture techniques. Males were resident and territorial, though we found disputes (complex flight manoeuvres) to be rare. Trunks (rotting wood) were important to male persistence in sites, as these are the locations preferred by females for oviposition. The mating system of C. rutilans may be comparable to the resource limitation category, described by Conrad & Pritchard (1992), where males cannot control female access to oviposition sites. So, female choice becomes important and apparently, the observed displays (in... |
