In Ghana a lot of products are produced from cassava roots, but processing of most cassava product requires peeling. Cassava peeling in Ghana is a major manual activity, which is time consuming and labour-intensive and hence requires mechanization. About 34% of freshly harvested cassava roots is lost along the food chain and faster processing is necessary to curb this situation. The development of an efficient equipment to help fast-track peeling of cassava root is key. A motorized cassava peeler with four different lining materials (concrete, metal, rubber and wood) was developed and tested with two local cassava varieties (Asi-Abayiwa and Dabon). The batch loading weight, peel removal efficiency, percent flesh loss and peeling capacity of the peeler was... |

In part I of this study it was shown that, to model synthetic fiber ropes, two scale transition models can be used in sequence. The first model (continuum model) has been presented in the part I and the present paper examines the behavior of a fibrous structure consisting of 6 helicoidal strands around a central core (1 + 6 structure). An analytical model will be presented which enables the global elastic behavior of such a cable under tension-torsion loading to be predicted. In this model, first, the core and the strands are described as Kirchhoff-Love beams and then the traction-torsion coupling behavior is taken into account for both of them. By modeling the contact conditions between the strands and the core, with certain assumptions, it is possible to... |

Synthetic fiber ropes are characterized by a very complex architecture and a hierarchical structure. Considering the fiber rope architecture, to pass from fiber to rope structure behavior, two scale transition models are necessary, used in sequence: one is devoted to an assembly of a large number of twisted components (multilayered), whereas the second is suitable for a structure with a central straight core and six helical wires (1 + 6). The part I of this paper first describes the development of a model for the static behavior of a fibrous structure with a large number of twisted components. Tests were then performed on two different structures subjected to axial loads. Using the model presented here the axial stiffness of the structures has been... |

Even though much improvement has been made in plant transformation methods, the screening of transgenic plants is often a laborious work. Most approaches for detecting the transgene in transformed plants are still timeconsuming, and can be quite expensive. The objective of this study was to search for a simpler method to screen for transgenic plants. The infiltration of kanamycin (100 mg/mL) into tobacco leaves resulted in conspicuous chlorotic spots on the non-transgenic plant leaves, while no spots were seen on the leaves of transformed plants. This reaction occurred regardless of age of the tested plants, and the method has proven to be simple, fast, non-destructive, relatively cheap, and reliable. These results were comparable to those obtained by the... |

The objective of this study was to optimize and validate the solid-liquid extraction (ESL) technique for determination of picloram residues in soil samples. At the optimization stage, the optimal conditions for extraction of soil samples were determined using univariate analysis. Ratio soil/solution extraction, type and time of agitation, ionic strength and pH of extraction solution were evaluated. Based on the optimized parameters, the following method of extraction and analysis of picloram was developed: weigh 2.00 g of soil dried and sieved through a sieve mesh of 2.0 mm pore, add 20.0 mL of KCl concentration of 0.5 mol L-1, shake the bottle in the vortex for 10 seconds to form suspension and adjust to pH 7.00, with alkaline KOH 0.1 mol L-1. Homogenate... |

StarLink corn, a variety not approved for human use, disrupted the marketing system in 2000 because of inadvertent commingling. This paper provides an overview of the economics of testing grain for biotech content. What are the risks facing buyers and sellers, and how are these influenced by testing protocols? How do market premiums and discounts, testing costs, and prior beliefs affect the incentives to test? A conceptual model is developed in which sellers choose whether to pre-test grain prior to shipment. Through simulation analysis, we illustrate the impact of market premiums and other variables on testing incentives and buyer risk. |

A stochastic optimization model was developed to determine optimal testing strategies, costs, and risks of a dual marketing system. The model chooses the testing strategy (application, intensity, and tolerance) that maximizes utility (minimizes disutility) of additional system costs due to testing and quality loss and allows simulation of the risk premium required to induce grain handlers to undertake a dual marketing system versus a Non-GM system. Cost elements including those related to testing, quality loss, and a risk premium were estimated for a model representing a grain export chain. Uncertainties were incorporated and include test accuracy, risk of adventitious commingling throughout, and variety declaration. Sensitivities were performed for... |

The New Zealand Qualification Authority (NZQA) started to introduce a new qualification; the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) in 2002. NCEA level 3 replaced the University Bursary Examinations in 2004. The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between the number and quality of credits gained at NCEA level 3 by students and their academic performance in a first year economics course - Business Economics and the New Zealand Economy at Waikato University. Other factors that could affect student performance are also investigated. Our analysis suggests that several factors can have an impact on student's performance in ECON100. These factors include nationality, semester, total number of NCEA level 3 credits and the... |
