Simulating maize phenology as a function of air temperature with a linear and a nonlinear model PAB
Streck,Nereu Augusto; Lago,Isabel; Gabriel,Luana Fernandes; Samboranha,Flavia Kaufmann.
The objective of this study was to adapt a nonlinear model (Wang and Engel - WE) for simulating the phenology of maize (Zea mays L.), and to evaluate this model and a linear one (thermal time), in order to predict developmental stages of a field-grown maize variety. A field experiment, during 2005/2006 and 2006/2007 was conducted in Santa Maria, RS, Brazil, in two growing seasons, with seven sowing dates each. Dates of emergence, silking, and physiological maturity of the maize variety BRS Missões were recorded in six replications in each sowing date. Data collected in 2005/2006 growing season were used to estimate the coefficients of the two models, and data collected in the 2006/2007 growing season were used as independent data set for model evaluations....

Demographic and Phenological Studies on David’s Spurge (Euphorbia davidii) in the Central Area of Buenos Aires Province, Argentina Planta Daninha
NÚÑEZ FRÉ,F.R.; JUAN,V.F.; SAINT ANDRÉ,H.M.; CHANTRE,G.R..
ABSTRACT: David’s Spurge is an spring-summer annual weed, present in the central area of Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. Field studies were carried out during 2011/12 and 2013/14 to assess demography and population dynamics and determine a thermal time scale of this species. At the experimental site, 1 m² quadrants were established as observational plots, four per cohort. The number of individuals at each phenological stage and from each cohort was recorded weekly. At the end of the experiment, all plots were harvested, and seed production was determined. A thermal time scale was established to identify the occurrence of the different phenological events. Three cohorts were detected, the first one emerged in mid-October, the second one in early November,...

Base temperature and simulation model for nodes appearance in cape gooseberry (Physalis peruviana L.) Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Salazar,Melba Ruth; Jones,James W.; Chaves,Bernardo; Cooman,Alexander; Fischer,Gerhard.
Data was analyzed on development of the solanaceen fruit crop Cape gooseberry to evaluate how well a classical thermal time model could describe node appearance in different environments. The data used in the analysis were obtained from experiments conducted in Colombia in open fields and greenhouse condition at two locations with different climate. An empirical, non linear segmented model was used to estimate the base temperature and to parameterize the model for simulation of node appearance vs. time. The base temperature (Tb) used to calculate the thermal time (TT, ºCd) for node appearance was estimated to be 6.29 ºC. The slope of the first linear segment was 0.023 nodes per TT and 0.008 for the second linear segment. The time at which the slope of node...

Chaves,Gabriela Görgen; Cargnelutti Filho,Alberto; Alves,Bruna Mendonça; Lavezo,André; Wartha,Cleiton Antonio; Uliana,Daniela Barbieri; Pezzini,Rafael Vieira; Kleinpaul,Jéssica Andiara; Neu,Ismael Mario Márcio.
Abstract Phyllochron and leaf appearance rate are both important parameters in the production efficiency of agricultural crops. The objectives of this study were to determine the phyllochron and leaf appearance rate in 4 oat cultivars (Avena sativa L.) in 3 sowing dates and verify the variability of phyllochron and leaf appearance rate among cultivars and sowing dates. The experimental design was the completely randomized with 12 treatments and 20 repetitions. Treatments were formed by the combination of 4 cultivars (URS Charrua, URS Taura, URS Estampa, and URS Corona) and 3 sowing dates in 2014 (April 28, May 28, and July 14). In each plant (repetition) of each treatment, the number of expanded leaves (NEL) was counted 3 times per week from the first leaf...

Comparison of eight degree-days estimation methods in four agroecological regions in Colombia Bragantia
Rodríguez Caicedo,Daniel; Cotes Torres,Jose Miguel; Cure,José Ricardo.
Eight methods were used to estimate degree-days in four Colombian localities. Four methods have been previously proposed in literature: Simple Sine, Double Sine, Simple Triangle, and Double Triangle methods. The other four methods are proposed in this research: Simple Logistic, Double Logistic, Simple Normal, and Double Normal. The estimation of the degree-days through hourly temperature values was used as the reference standard method, and the four localities from where the temperature values were taken were the municipalities of Cajicá (Cundinamarca), Santa Elena (Antioquia), Carepa (Urabá Antioqueño), and Ciudad Bolivar (Zona cafetera Antioqueña). Degree-days obtained by all methods under study were compared through linear regression to those obtained...

Base temperature for leaf appearance and phyllochron of selected strawberry cultivars in a subtropical environment Bragantia
Rosa,Hamilton Telles; Walter,Lidiane Cristine; Streck,Nereu Augusto; Andriolo,Jerônimo Luiz; Silva,Michel Rocha da; Langner,Josana Andréia.
Leaf development is characterized by the appearance of new leaves and is related to crop leaf area index, which affects the interception of solar radiation used for photosynthesis and biomass production and ultimately defines crop yield. The objectives of this paper were to estimate the base temperature for leaf appearance and to determine the phyllochron of two strawberry cultivars considering several planting dates. A two-year field experiment was conducted during 2008 and 2009 in Santa Maria (RS). The cultivars Arazá (early) and Yvapitá (late) were used at three planting dates in both years. Base temperature (Tb) was estimated using the Mean Square Error (MSE) approach of the regression between accumulated leaf number (LN) and accumulated thermal time...

Characterization of genetic coefficients of durum wheat (Triticum turgidumL. ssp. durum)'Llareta-INIA' and 'Corcolén-INIA' Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Garrido,Marco; Román,Luis; Silva,Paola; Castellaro,Giorgio; García de Cortázar,Víctor; Acevedo,Edmundo.
The genetic coefficients, representative of a crop, are necessary to use growth models; in many cases the range of the species is known, but there are no specific values for varieties. Durum wheat (Triticum turgidumL. ssp. durum)'Llareta-INIA' and 'Corcolén-INIA' were sown under irrigation in the experiment station Antumapu of the Universidad de Chile on 29 June 2007, 19 May 2009, and 15 June 2010 in order to determinate four genetic coefficients: developmental thermal time, phyllochron (PHLN), extinction coefficient (k), and radiation use efficiency (RUE), and to evaluate the performance of these coefficients. Thermal times to anthesis and from anthesis to physiological maturity were 652 and 541 °C d, respectively. Two PHLN values were found, 46.6 °C d...

Estimating leaf appearance rate and phyllochron in safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) Ciência Rural
Streck,Nereu Augusto; Bellé,Rogério Antonio; Rocha,Edileusa Kersting da; Schuh,Mariângela.
Safflower may be an interesting option for the flower market, either as fresh or dried cut flower. Estimating the leaf appearance rate and the phyllochron (the time interval between the appearance of successive leaves) is important for calculating the number of emerged leaves (NL) on the plant, which is an excellent measure of plant development. The objective of this study was to estimate the leaf appearance rate and the phyllochron in safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.). An experiment was conducted in Santa Maria, RS, Brazil, inside an 8 x 15m plastic greenhouse. Sowing was on 03 October 2003 and emergence was on 08 October 2003. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design with three replications. The main stem NL was measured twice a...
