Physical structures, advection and mixing in the region of Goban spur ArchiMer
Huthnance, John M.; Coelho, Henrique; Griffiths, Colin R.; Knight, Philip J.; Rees, Andrew P.; Sinha, Bablu; Vangriesheim, Annick; White, Martin; Chatwin, Paul G..
The physical context for ocean margin exchange at Goban Spur is described. Observations adjacent to, prior to and during the Ocean Margin EXchange (OMEX) project of 1993-1996 are used. They include currents measured on moorings, drogued-buoy tracks; temperature and other data from CTD profiles, especially as indicators of vertical mixing; evidence from models, particularly for turbulence causing vertical mixing. These data are combined in estimates of (seasonally dependent) mean flow, tidal currents, other current variability, exchange and mixing over the main cross-slope section studied in OMEX and in nearby and contrasted locations (aided by the use of earlier and adjacent measurements). Causative physical processes are discussed: potentially northward...

Variation of the tidal properties around Gran Canaria ArchiMer
Martinez, A; Perez, E; Bruno, M.
Analysis of water level and current meter series from different locations on the island shelf of Gran Canaria reveals strong variations in tidal properties. Semidiurnal sea level amplitudes agree with the results obtained from global tidal models for this region only on the northern coast of the island, while they decrease towards the southwest (10 cm difference for the M-2 constituent). Semidiurnal currents present maxima at the southeastern and northwestern extremities of the island (30-40 cm s(-1) for M-2) and minima in the north-northeast and southwest (3-6 cm s(-1) for M-2), showing simultaneous strong changes in the phase. Diurnal levels and currents display smaller variations than the semidiurnal band. The behaviour of semidiurnal constituents is...

Simulation of radar backscatter and Doppler shifts of wave-current interaction in the presence of strong tidal current ArchiMer
Hansen, M. W.; Kudryavtsev, V.; Chapron, Bertrand; Johannessen, J. A.; Collard, Fabrice; Dagestad, K. -f.; Mouche, A.a..
A radar imaging model including a Doppler shift module is presented for quantitative studies of radar observations of wave-current interaction in a strong tidal current regime. The model partitions the Doppler shift into the relative contribution arising from the motion of the backscattering facets including Bragg waves, specular points, and breaking waves that are advected by and interact with the underlying surface current. Simulated and observed normalized radar cross sections and Doppler shifts for different environmental conditions and radar parameters are compared and discussed. (C) 2012 Elsevier Inc. Three-dimensional numerical model study of the residual current in the South China Sea ArchiMer
Cai, Sq; Huang, Qz; Long, Xm.
A three-dimensional baroclinic shelf sea model is employed to simulate the tidal and non-tidal residual current in the South China Sea. The four most significant constituents, M-2, S-2, K-1 and O-1, are included in the experiments with tidal effect. At most stations, the computed harmonic constants agree well with the observed ones. The circulations of the South China Sea in summer (August) and winter (December) are mainly discussed. It is shown that the barotropic tidal residual current is too weak to affect the South China Sea circulation, whilst the contribution of the baroclinic tidal residual current to the South China Sea circulation would be important in the continental shelf sea areas, especially in the Gulf of Thailand and Gulf of Tonkin. In the...

Vertical structure of the semidiurnal tidal currents at Camarinal Sill, the strait of Gibraltar ArchiMer
Bruno, M; Mananes, R; Alonso, Jj; Izquierdo, A; Tejedor, L; Kagan, Ba.
The dynamical mode decomposition (DMD) technique is applied to the data of currentmeter and CTD measurements taken during the 1985-1986 Gibraltar Experiment and the 1989 survey so as to clarify features of the vertical structure of the M(2) and S(2) tidal currents at the Camarinal Sill. It is shown that in conformity with the inference made on the basis of the empirical orthogonal function (EOF) decomposition technique, these currents are mainly due to the M(2) and S(2) barotropic modes. At the same time the first three baroclinic modes are responsible not only for the vertical variability of the tidal currents but also for the velocity acid density amplitude variances at semidiurnal frequencies. Certain quantitative discrepancies between the values of...
