Contrasted habitats and individual plasticity drive the fine scale movements of juvenile green turtles in coastal ecosystems ArchiMer
Chambault, Philippine; Dalleau, Mayeul; Nicet, Jean-benoit; Mouquet, Pascal; Ballorain, Katia; Jean, Claire; Ciccione, Stéphane; Bourjea, Jerome.
Background A strong behavioural plasticity is commonly evidenced in the movements of marine megafauna species, and it might be related to an adaptation to local conditions of the habitat. One way to investigate such behavioural plasticity is to satellite track a large number of individuals from contrasting foraging grounds, but despite recent advances in satellite telemetry techniques, such studies are still very limited in sea turtles. Methods From 2010 to 2018, 49 juvenile green turtles were satellite tracked from five contrasting feeding grounds located in the South-West Indian Ocean in order to (1) assess the diel patterns in their movements, (2) investigate the inter-individual and inter-site variability, and (3) explore the drivers of their daily...

Réponses et adaptations de la charge énergétique adénylique et l'activité enzymatique digestive à l'emersion chez Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
Moal, Jeanne; Samain, Jean-francois.
The effect of tidal emergence on the adenylate energy charge value was studied in Crassostrea gigas oysters in Marennes-Oleron Bay. The shot-term AEC responses to aerial exposure differed according to the period of the year. However, on a long-term basis, osters from three bathymetric positions exhibited the same AEC value, but had a different growth rate. The amylase increase observed for the most emerged oysters may play a role in the maintenance of energy equilibrium.

Behaviour of a floc population during a tidal cycle: laboratory experiments and numerical modelling ArchiMer
Verney, Romaric; Lafite, Robert; Brun-cottan, Jean Claude; Le Hir, Pierre.
An approach combining laboratory experiments and numerical modelling was used to investigate the behaviour of a floc population during an idealized tidal cycle. The experiment was conducted on suspended sediments at a concentration of 93 mg l−1 collected in the field. It was based on a jar test device to reproduce tidal-induced turbulence and coupled with a CCD camera system and image post-processing software to monitor floc size distribution. At the same time, a 0D size-class based aggregation/fragmentation model (FLOCMOD) was developed to simulate changes in the floc population over the tidal cycle. Experimental results revealed strong variability of the behaviour of microfloc and macrofloc populations with respect to the varying shear rates observed in...

Mangrove‐Derived Organic and Inorganic Carbon Exchanges Between the Sinnamary Estuarine System (French Guiana, South America) and Atlantic Ocean ArchiMer
Ray, Raghab; Thouzeau, Gerard; Walcker, Romain; Vantrepotte, Vincent; Gleixner, Gerd; Morvan, Sylvain; Devesa, Jeremy; Michaud, Emma.
There is growing evidence that a substantial fraction of the dissolved organic and inorganic carbon (DOC and DIC) and particulate organic carbon (POC) can be exported from mangroves to the ocean. Yet our understanding of C fluxes in mangrove forests is limited to only few regional studies that exclude the world's longest sediment dispersal system connected to the Amazon River. The present study aims at (1) examining tidal fluctuations of DOC, POC, and DIC; their isotopes; and optical properties such as chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) and (2) estimating their exchange fluxes between the mangroves and adjacent coastal water in the Sinnamary estuary, French Guiana. Time series observation highlighted that physical processes coupled to tides...

Seasonal variation in fish larvae at the entrance of Guanabara Bay, Brazil BABT
Castro,Marcia S. de; Bonecker,Ana Cristina Teixeira; Valentin,Jean L..
Studies were carried out to find out qualitative and quantitative temporal variations in fish larvae to relate seasonal, diurnal and tidal cycles to the density of larvae. Sampling was performed at one station, during two three-day periods in September 1995 and March 1996. Samples were collected during ebb and flood tides,in oblique hauls using a bongo net of 500 µm mesh size. A total of 42 taxa were identified. The families Engraulidae (Cetengraulis edentulus, Anchoa lyolepis) and Clupeidae (Harengula jaguana) had high mean densities and dominated both periods. Higher larval mean densities occurred in March, a period of relatively high temperatures and low salinities. The diurnal pattern of larval abundance consisted of high densities at night and low...
