Distribution and vertical stratification of carbon and nitrogen in soil under different managements in the pampean region of Argentina Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Álvarez,Carina Rosa; Costantini,Alejandro Oscar; Bono,Alfredo; Taboada,Miguel Ángel; Boem,Flavio Hernán Gutiérrez; Fernández,Patricia Lilia; Prystupa,Pablo.
One of the expected benefits of no-tillage systems is a higher rate of soil C sequestration. However, higher C retention in soil is not always apparent when no-tillage is applied, due e.g., to substantial differences in soil type and initial C content. The main purpose of this study was to evaluate the potential of no-tillage management to increase the stock of total organic C in soils of the Pampas region in Argentina. Forty crop fields under no-tillage and conventional tillage systems and seven undisturbed soils were sampled. Total organic C, total N, their fractions and stratification ratios and the C storage capacity of the soils under different managements were assessed in samples to a depth of 30 cm, in three layers (0-5, 5-15 and 15-30 cm). The...

Tavares, Orlando Carlos Huertas; UFRRJ; Lima, Eduardo; UFRRJ; Zonta, Everaldo; UFRRJ.

Effect of tillage systems and permanent groundcover intercropped with orange trees on soil enzyme activities BABT
Balota,Elcio Liborio; Machineski,Oswaldo; Truber,Priscila Viviane; Auler,Pedro Antonio Martins.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different soil tillage systems and groundcover crops intercropped with orange trees on soil enzyme activities. The experiment was performed in an Ultisol soil in northwestern Paraná State. Two soil tillage systems were evaluated [conventional tillage (CT) across the entire area and strip tillage (ST) with a 2-m strip width] in combination with various groundcover vegetation management systems. Soil samples were collected after five years of experimental management at a depth of 0-15 cm under the tree canopy and in the inter-row space in the following treatments: (1) CT-Calopogonium mucunoides; (2) CT-Arachis pintoi; (3) CT-Bahiagrass; (4) CT-Brachiaria humidicola; and (5) ST-B. humidicola. The soil...

Soil enzyme activities under long-term tillage and crop rotation systems in subtropical agro-ecosystems BJM
Balota,Elcio Liborio; Kanashiro,Miriam; Colozzi Filho,Arnaldo; Andrade,Diva Souza; Dick,Richard Peter.
Agricultural practices that reduce soil degradation and improve agricultural sustainability are needed particularly for tropical/subtropical soils. No-tillage planting causes minimal soil disturbance and combined with crop rotation may hold potential to meet these goals. Soil enzyme activities can provide information on how soil management is affecting the potential to perform the processes in soils such as decomposition and nutrient cycling. Soil enzyme activities were investigated in a split-plot experiment (3 replications) where tillage (no till and conventional) was the main plot and crop rotation (soybean/wheat, S/W; maize/wheat, M/W or cotton/wheat, C/W) was the subplot. The experiment was established in 1976 in southern Brazil. Soil samples were...

Soil cover plants on water erosion control in the South of Minas Gerais Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Dias,Adriana Cristina; Silva,Marx Leandro Naves; Freitas,Diego Antonio França de; Batista,Pedro Velloso Gomes; Curi,Nilton; Carvalho,Gabriel José de.
Water erosion is responsible for soil, water, carbon and nutrient losses, turning into the most important type of degradation of Brazilian soils. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of three cover plants under two tillage systems on water erosion control in an Argisol at south of Minas Gerais state, Brazil. The cover plants utilized in the study were pigeon pea, jack bean and millet, under contour seeding and downslope tillage. Experimental plots of 4 x 12 m, with 9% slope, under natural rainfall were used for the quantification of losses of soil, water, nutrients, and organic matter. One experimental plot was kept without plant cover (reference). Higher erosivity was observed in December and January, although a great quantity of erosive rainfall...
