The contribution of fire damage to restricting high mountain Polylepis australis forests to ravines: Insights from an un-replicated comparison Ecología austral
Alinari,Julieta; von Müller,Axel; Renison,Daniel.
High mountain forests are often restricted to ravines and much debate has existed on the explanations of this distribution, with arguments ranging from abiotic site conditions being more favorable in ravines to there being reduced herbivory or reduced fre frequency and damage in ravines. We aim at understanding the contribution of fre damage and provide data to help test the hypothesis that fires are less damaging and that trees recover faster in ravines as compared to ridge sites. We evaluated crown damage, post-fire survival, regeneration by resprouts and seeds, and browsed stems in burned and unburned control Polylepis australis trees situated in a ravine and in a ridge forest in the west slope of the mountains of Central Argentina. The proportion of...

Erosion factors and magnetic susceptibility in differet compartments of a slope in Gilbués-PI, Brazil REA
Santos,Hélio L.; Marques Júnior,José; Matias,Sammy S. R.; Siqueira,Diego S.; Martins Filho,Marcílio V..
The erosion is the degradation of soil with effects on crop productivity and pollution of the environment. To understand the spatial variability of this phenomenon, geostatistical techniques and concepts of soil-landscape can be used to identify landscape compartments with different potential of erosion. The aim of this study was to understand the factors of erosion in landscape compartments and the relations with the magnetic susceptibility (MS) of the soils in a slope in Gilbués, state of Piauí (PI), Brazil. Sampling meshes were set in compartments I and II with 121 points and in compartment III with 99 points spaced every 10 meters. There was significant difference to erodibility (K) and risk of erosion (RE); the spatial variability of MS was lower than...

Variabilité décennale de la circulation océanique et modes de bassin: Influence de la topographie et de la circulation moyenne ArchiMer
Ferjani, Dhouha.
One of the potential mechanisms at the origin of climatic variability on decadal to multidecadal timescales is the thermohaline oscillation corresponding to large-scale and low frequency basin modes that result from the interaction between long planetary waves and fast inertia-gravity waves during the adjustment process. However, most of the studies dealing with this decadal oscillation were carried out in a simplified flat bottom or reduced-gravity quasigeostrophic context. This dissertation aims to study the effect of bottom topography and mean flow on the characteristics of the gravest baroclinic basin modes of variability in a mid-latitude idealized ocean basin. To that end, we make use of a two-layer shallow water (SW) model. Different bathymetries...

Stability of some stationary solutions to the forced KdV equation with one or two bumps ArchiMer
Chardard, Frederic; Dias, Frederic; Nguyen, Hai Yen; Vanden-broeck, Jean-marc.
Free-surface flows past submerged obstacles in a channel are considered. The fluid is assumed to be inviscid and incompressible and the flow to be irrotational. The first-order approximation of long nonlinear surface waves over one or two bumps results in a forced Korteweg-de Vries (fKdV) equation. Solutions of the stationary fKdV equation are constructed and their stability is studied, either analytically or numerically. These various solutions include solitary waves over a single bump, solitary waves with two humps over a double bump, table-top solutions over a double bump and fronts.

The importance of habitat features in low-relief continental shelf environments ArchiMer
Malatesta, Rj; Auster, Pj.
Benthic habitats can be loosely divided into low and high relief based upon gross bottom topography. While fish community studies in high relief environments such as coral reefs have been extensively studied using in situ visual analysis, most studies of low relief environments have utilized trawl-based methodologies. Such studies while valuable, are unable to detect small-scale variations in habitat availability and faunal responses to that variation. This paper presents the availability of other techniques, ranging from visual surveys to sonar and bathymetric analysis, which allow research era to address questions of habitat utilization in low relief environments.

Comparison of mesozooplankton communities at three shallow seamounts in the South West Indian Ocean ArchiMer
Noyon, Margaux; Rasoloarijao, Zo; Huggett, Jenny; Ternon, Jean-francois; Roberts, Michael.
Seamounts are recognised as hotspots of biodiversity, attracting large numbers of top predators, but the underlying mechanisms are still unclear. We studied mesozooplankton abundance and size distribution at three shallow seamounts (60m, 240m and 18m deep) in the South West Indian Ocean, along a latitudinal gradient (19°S, 27°S and 33°S). Samples were analysed using a ZooScan, allowing the use of a size-based approach. Differences were observed between seamount areas, but overall zooplankton communities did not seem to be affected by the changes in topography. Only in the lee of La Pérouse seamount was the zooplankton community slightly more concentrated than upstream, suggesting that zooplankton were flushed downstream of the seamount. The southernmost...

Large-Scale Forces Under Surface Gravity Waves at a Wavy Bottom: A Mechanism for the Generation of Primary Microseisms ArchiMer
Ardhuin, Fabrice.
Primary microseisms are background seismic oscillations recorded everywhere on Earth with typical frequencies 0.05 < f < 0.1 Hz. They appear to be generated by ocean waves of the same frequency f, propagating over shallow bottom topography. Previous quantitative models for the generation of primary microseisms considered wave propagation over topographic features with either large scales, equivalent to a vertical point force, or small scales matching ocean wave wavelengths, equivalent to a horizontal force. While the first requires unrealistic bottom slopes to explain measured Rayleigh wave amplitudes, the second produced Love waves and not enough Rayleigh waves. Here we show how the small scales actually produce comparable horizontal and vertical...

The Interaction of Two Surface Vortices Near a Topographic Slope in a Stratified Ocean ArchiMer
De Marez, Charly; Carton, Xavier; Morvan, Mathieu; Reinaud, Jean N..
We study the influence of bottom topography on the interaction of two identical vortices in a two-layer, quasi-geostrophic model. The two vortices have piecewise-uniform potential vorticity and are lying in the upper layer of the model. The topography is a smooth bottom slope. For two cyclones, topography modifies the merger critical distance and the merger efficiency: the topographic wave and vortices can advect the two cyclones along the shelf when they are initially far from it or towards the shelf when they are initially closer to it. They can also advect the two cyclones towards each other and thus favour merger. The cyclones deform, and the potential vorticity field undergoes filamentation. Regimes of partial vortex merger or of vortex splitting are...

How momentum advection schemes influence current-topography interactions at eddy permitting resolution ArchiMer
Le Sommer, Julien; Penduff, Thierry; Theetten, Sebastien; Madec, Gurvan; Barnier, Bernard.
Recent studies have shown that the use of an enstrophy-and-energy-conserving momentum advection scheme substantially reduces widespread biases of mean currents in the global 1/4 degrees DRAKKAR model. This paper investigates the origin of these improvements. A series of sensitivity simulations with different momentum advection schemes is performed with the North Atlantic 1/4 degrees DRAKKAR model. Three second order momentum advection schemes conserving, respectively, enstrophy (ens), energy (efx) and both quantities (een) are tested and their impact on the model solution are compared. The mean kinetic energy vertical profile is found to change up to 10% depending on the chosen scheme. This sensitivity is maximum in bottom layers. The analysis of the...

Effects of Monsoon Winds and Topographical Features on the Vertical Thermohaline and Biogeochemical Structure in the Gulf of Tadjourah (Djibouti) ArchiMer
Omar, Youssouf Moussa; Memery, Laurent; Carton, Xavier; Daher, Abdourahman; Duvielbourg, Eric.
The vertical thermohaline and biogeochemical structures of the upper layer (0 - 200 m) were studied in the Gulf of Tadjourah using high-resolution hydrographic data collected in July-August 2013, September 2013 and February 2014. During summer, the superficial layer consisted of the mixed layer (ML) extending to a depth of about 20 - 30 m followed by the thermocline located between 30 and 50 m depth. The ML was thicker in the west and the southeast where the thermal gradient and chlorophyll a concentrations were particularly high. During September, this stratification persisted but the ML became warmer and saltier and the thermocline moved slightly deeper. In February, the ML extended to about 120 m, and the thermocline was less pronounced. A comparison of...

Topography of the Middle Genicular Artery is Associated with the Superior and Inferior Genicular Arteries International Journal of Morphology
Yang,Kiwook; Park,Jae-Hee; Jung,Soo-Jung; Lee,Hyunsu; Choi,In-Jang; Lee,Jae-Ho.
Total knee arthroplasty has increased substantially, however anatomical studies of the genicular arteries (GAs) in this region are rare. The aim of this study was to identify the pattern and branching points of GAs and their relationship. In 42 lower limbs, the pattern and branching points of GAs were confirmed. The horizontal line which extends between the most prominent point of the lateral and medial margins of patella was defined as a reference line. The distance of branching point of the GAs from the reference line was measured, and the correlations between these points were analyzed. The superior lateral and medial genicular arteries (SLGA and SMGA) were located at + 38.17 ± 3.10 mm and + 32.68 ± 3.83 mm from the reference line, respectively. The...

Brachial plexus neuropathies are common complaints among patients seen at orthopedic clinics. The causes range from traumatic to occupational factors and symptoms include paresthesia, paresis, and functional disability of the upper limb. Treatment can be surgical or conservative, but detailed knowledge of the brachial plexus is required in both cases to avoid iatrogenic injuries and to facilitate anesthetic block, preventing possible vascular punctures. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the topography of the infraclavicular brachial plexus fascicles in different upper limb positions adopted during some clinical procedures. A formalin-preserved, adult, male cadaver was used. The infraclavicular and axillary regions were dissected and...

Análise temporal da heterogeneidade florística e estrutural em uma floresta ribeirinha Rev. Bras. Bot.
BERTANI,DANIELA FESSEL; RODRIGUES,RICARDO RIBEIRO; BATISTA,JOÃO LUIZ FERREIRA; SHEPHERD,GEORGE JOHN.
As análises quantitativas...

Floristic composition and topographic variation in a tidal floodplain forest in the Amazon Estuary Rev. Bras. Bot.
CATTANIO,JOSÉ H.; ANDERSON,ANTHONY B.; CARVALHO,MANOEL S..
Slight topographic variations appear to exert dramatic effects on the structure of forests subject to inundation. In a late successional tidal floodplain forest near the Amazon port of Belém, Brazil, we examined these effects by studying floristic composition along a topographic gradient. We predicted that, relative to high sites, low sites would be characterized by high representation of life forms and taxa characteristic of inundated sites. We found striking variations in floristic composition along a slight topographic gradient. In comparison with topographically high sites, low sites were characterized by a high representation of Palm trees (Arecaceae), low diversity of trees and lianas, and high plant density. These variations appear to reflect...

The combined use of reflectance, emissivity and elevation Aster/Terra data for tropical soil studies Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Breunig,Fábio Marcelo; Galvão,Lênio Soares; Formaggio,Antonio Roberto; Couto,Eduardo Guimarães.
Reflectance, emissivity and elevation data of the sensor ASTER (Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer)/Terra were used to characterize soil composition variations according to the toposequence position. Normalized data of SWIR (shortwave infrared) reflectance and TIR (thermal infrared) emissivity, coupled to a soil-fraction image from a spectral mixture model, were evaluated to separate bare soils from nonphotosynthetic vegetation. Regression relationships of some soil properties with reflectance and emissivity data were then applied on the exposed soil pixels. The resulting estimated values were plotted on the ASTER-derived digital elevation model. Results showed that the SWIR bands 5 and 6 and the TIR bands 10 and 14 measured the...
