Weathering of Rhyolites and Soil Formation in an Atlantic Forest Fragment in Northeastern Brazil Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Brilhante,Stephany Alves; Santos,Jean Cheyson Barros dos; Souza Júnior,Valdomiro Severino de; Araújo,Jane Kelly Silva; Ribeiro Filho,Mateus Rosas; Corrêa,Marcelo Metri.
ABSTRACT Weathering and pedogenesis have been studied for a wide range of rocks and climates around the world. However, the eruption of rhyolitic magmas is a rare geological event, which leads to few studies associated with the rhyolite-soil-landscape relationship. In this context, this study evaluated the influence of rhyolite weathering on the properties of soils along a slope in an Atlantic Forest environment in the state of Pernambuco, northeastern Brazil. Four weathering profiles derived from rhyolites were classified and sampled for chemical, physical, mineralogical, micromorphological, differential thermal, and thermogravimetric analyses. The chemical properties reflect the original rock rich in felsic minerals, poor in bases, and the types of clay...

Savanna woodland soil micromorphology related to water retention Scientia Agricola
Juhász,Carlos Eduardo Pinto; Cooper,Miguel; Cursi,Patrícia Ribeiro; Ketzer,André Oppitz; Toma,Raul Shiso.
The limiting factors of the Brazilian savanna physical environment have been largely discussed. Soil morphology is fundamental to understand the behavior of soil water flow, soil physical properties and soil-landscape relationships. The aim of this study is to relate soil micro and macromorphologic attributes to soil water retention on a toposequence under native savanna woodland (cerradão) in a permanent plot of 320 m <FONT FACE=Symbol>´</FONT> 320 m installed in Assis, SP, Brazil. Samples collected at five points within the toposequence were used to determine the soil macroporosity by means of image analyses, estimated total porosity, chemical analysis, particle size distribution analysis and soil water retention. From the summit down to the...

Physical properties of soils under intensive agricultural management Scientia Agricola
Soares,Jorge Luís Nascimento; Espindola,Carlos Roberto; Pereira,Walcylene Lacerda Matos.
Pedologic alterations after long-term sugar cane (Saccharum officinarum) cropping cycles under traditional soil management systems were studied on a farm in Bariri, SP, Brazil. A toposequence was established to evaluate the effects of the soil position in the relief in changing soil physical attributes. Morphological field descriptions and laboratory analyses were carried out on vertical profiles of the upper, middle and lower thirds of a Typic Haplorthox slope. Soil bulk density and macroporosity changed along the toposequence reflecting on soil hydrodynamics, especially in the lower slope parts. At sites with high clay levels, empty spaces were filled forming block shaped structures together with the micro-aggregate structure. The intensive cultivation...

Potential of soils for growing cassava and sugarcane on toposequence of sandstone low hill atKrissana subdistrict, Sikhiu district, Nakhon Ratchasima province was undertaken on four locations, summit slope, upper middle slope, lower middle slope, and footslope of low hill. All four soils were classified as Typic Paleustults. They were deep soils with well drained feature. Groundwater depth at the time of sampling was between 125-200 m where the soil on the middle slope had the shallowest ground water level of 125 m. Their topsoils had brown tostrong brown colours. The colour of subsoils of soil on the summit was red and became yellow with a presence of mottles in soils located on the middle slope to the lowest position of the study area. Physico-chemical...

Characteristics of soils along footslope of limestone mountain were studied in farmer field used for growing sugarcane in Wangdong subdistrict, Muang district, Kanchanaburi province. There were eight locations selected, comprising lower footslope (ND-1), upper lower footslope (ND-2), lower middle footslope (ND-3), middle footslope (ND-4),upper middle footslope (ND-5), erosional lower upper footslope (ND-6), lower upper footslope (ND-7), and upper footslope (ND-8). This study aimed at investigating the relationship of soil characteristics and their position on footslope. Soil morphological, physical and chemical properties were examined and analyzed based on standard methods. All soils studied were classified as Aquic Haplustalf (ND-6), Inceptic Haplustalf...

Relationships between structure of the tree component and environmental variables in a subtropical seasonal forest in the upper Uruguay River valley, Brazil Acta Botanica
Mélo,Máida Ariane de; Budke,Jean Carlos; Henke-Oliveira,Carlos.
This study aimed to analyze relationships among the structure of the tree component, edaphic variables and canopy discontinuity along a toposequence in a seasonal upland (hillside) forest in southern Brazil. Soil and vegetation were sampled in 25 plots of 20 × 20 m each. We described the vegetation in terms of structure, richness and diversity, as well as by species distribution patterns. We evaluated canopy continuity, determined sloping and calculated spatial coordinates. We applied partial canonical correspondence analysis (pCCA) to determine whether species distribution correlated with environmental and spatial variables. We identified 1201 individuals belonging to 76 species within 30 families. The species with highest density and frequency were...
