An additional record of Oichnus excavatus Donovan & Jagt from the Maastrichtian (Upper Cretaceous) of southern Limburg, The Netherlands Naturalis
Donovan, S.K.; Jagt, J.W.M..
A single example of Oichnus excavatus Donovan & Jagt, infesting the holasteroid echinoid Hemipneustes striatoradiatus (Leske), is reported from the upper Meerssen Member, Maastricht Formation (uppermost Maastrichtian), of the former Blom quarry, Berg en Terblijt, southern Limburg, The Netherlands. This is the first evidence that O. excavatus may be more widely distributed in the type area of the Maastrichtian than previously assumed. The embedment structure occurs just below the ambitus and close to the peristome, suggesting that the producing organism may have been ingesting detritus from the sea floor rather than filter feeding, the more usual interpretation of its behaviour.

Ichnology of the Lower Miocene Chenque Formation, Patagonia, Argentina: animal - substrate interactions and the Modern Evolutionary Fauna Ameghiniana
Carmona,Noelia B.; Buatois,Luis A.; Mángano,María Gabriela; Bromley,Richard G..
The lower Miocene Chenque Formation of Patagonia contains superbly preserved and diverse ichnofaunas, including the ichnogenera Asterosoma, Balanoglossites, Chondrites, Gastrochaenolites, Gyrolithes, Helicodromites, Macaronichnus, Nereites, Ophiomorpha, Palaeophycus, Phycosiphon, Planolites, Protovirgularia, Rhizocorallium, Rosselia, Schaubcylindrichnus, Scolicia, Siphonichnus, Skolithos, Spongeliomorpha, Taenidium, Teichichnus, and Thalassinoides. Wave-influenced open-marine deposits are characterized by intense bioturbation, complex tiering structures and a very high diversity. Restricted, brackish-water, tide-dominated deposits display lesser degrees of bioturbation, less complex tiering structures and lower ichnodiversity. Both marginal- and...

Paleoecological and paleoenvironmental implications of a high-density Chondrites association in slope deposits of the Neogene Santo Domingo Formation, Valdivia, south-central Chile Ameghiniana
Encinas,Alfonso; Buatois,Luis A.; Finger,Kenneth L..
Neogene marine strata of the Santo Domingo Formation crop out in the vicinity of Valdivia, south-central Chile (40°S, 73°W). The succession is characterized by dark-gray sandy siltstone with abundant Chondrites isp. The occurrence of this ichnotaxon and lower-bathyal benthic foraminifers is consistent with a slope depositional environment. The abundance of Chondrites and the low ichnodiversity reveal poorly oxygenated bottom waters. The Santo Domingo Formation most likely accumulated in fault-controlled, intraslope silled minibasins, which werw formed during a major event of Neogene subsidence of the Chilean margin.

Patagonichnus: a new trace fossil from the Miocene of Patagonia. A probable fodinichnion of gregarious polychaetes Ameghiniana
Olivero,Eduardo B.; López Cabrera,María I..
Miocene tidal deposits from Las Grutas, Patagonia, Argentina, superbly preserve cylindrically laminated burrow systems including Asterosoma radiciforme von Otto and three compound ichnospecies of the newly proposed ichnogenus Patagonichnus ; P. calyciformis n. isp.; P. stratiformis n. isp.; and P . thalassiformis n. isp. Together with large, palmate burrows, probably produced by crustacean decapods, they are elite trace fossils. The Patagonichnus burrow systems consist of many distinctive concentrically laminated elementary components including: horizontal and vertical, conical and helicoidal bulbs and swellings; vertical shafts; straight and paired branches; and cone-in-cone structures. Hollow, branched, straight or helicoidal inner lined tubes connect...

Ichnology of the Alfarcito Member (Santa Rosita Formation) of northwestern Argentina: animal-substrate interactions in a lower Paleozoic wave-dominated shallow sea Ameghiniana
Mángano,M. Gabriela; Buatois,Luis A.; Muñiz Guinea,Fernando.
The lower fine-grained interval of the Alfarcito Member of the Upper Cambrian-Tremadocian Santa Rosita Formation in northwestern Argentina represents an overall transgressive-regressive cycle, recording the establishment of an open-marine, shallow, low-gradient platform. Four main sedimentary facies have been recognized, environmentally ranging from the lower offshore to the lower/middle shoreface. Alternating and contrasting energy conditions due to repeated storm events superimposed on fairweather sediments were among the key controlling factors for trace fossil distribution and preservation. Fairweather and storm-related trace fossil assemblages are recognized. The first is the most diverse and includes the more varied behavioral strategies, such as...
