Predicting Geographic Ranges of Marine Animal Populations Using Stable Isotopes: A Case Study of Great Hammerhead Sharks in Eastern Australia ArchiMer
Raoult, Vincent; Trueman, Clive N; Kingsbury, Kelsey M; Gillanders, Bronwyn M; Broadhurst, Matt K; Williamson, Jane E; Nagelkerken, Ivan; Booth, David J; Peddemors, Victor; Couturier, Lydie Ir; Gaston, Troy F.
Determining the geographic range of widely dispersed or migratory marine organisms is notoriously difficult, often requiring considerable costs and typically extensive tagging or exploration programs. While these approaches are accurate and can reveal important information on the species, they are usually conducted on only a small number of individuals and can take years to produce relevant results, so alternative approaches may be preferable. The presence of latitudinal gradients in stable carbon isotope compositions of marine phytoplankton offers a means to quickly determine likely geographic population ranges of species that rely on productivity from these resources. Across sufficiently large spatial and temporal scales, the stable carbon isotopes of...

Contribution des DCP fixes et derivants a l'accroissement de la puissance de peche des navires de peche thoniere ArchiMer
Le Gall, Jy.
Tuna world fisheries yield 3 million tons per year; the increase rate of whole production is constant and sustained since 30 years. This original figure for marine fisheries is due to enlargement of tuna fleets and fishing grounds over all the world ocean, the continuous increase of tuna fishing power by in board equipment and remote sensing equipment for searching and scouting (on board, aircraft, satellite, telecommunication_). During the last 20 years, the log-associated tuna fishing has contributed to the local individual and tuna fleets efficiency and fishing power either for large industrial tuna seiners by radio-equipped buoys on natural (debris) or artificial man-made logs. The same trend is noted for numerous artisanal tuna and large pelagic...

Satellite remote sensing for an ecosystem approach to fisheries management ArchiMer
Chassot, Emmanuel; Bonhommeau, Sylvain; Reygondeau, Gabriel; Nieto, Karen; Polovina, Jeffrey J.; Huret, Martin; Dulvy, Nicholas K.; Demarcq, Herve.
Satellite remote sensing (SRS) of the marine environment has become instrumental in ecology for environmental monitoring and impact assessment, and it is a promising tool for conservation issues. In the context of an ecosystem approach to fisheries management (EAFM), global, daily, systematic, high-resolution images obtained from satellites provide a good data source for incorporating habitat considerations into marine fish population dynamics. An overview of the most common SRS datasets available to fishery scientists and state-of-the-art data-processing methods is presented, focusing on recently developed techniques for detecting mesoscale features such as eddies, fronts, filaments, and river plumes of major importance in productivity enhancement and...

Preliminary analysis on the interdecadal variation characteristics of typhoon over the Northwestern Pacific in the past sixty years. OceanDocs
Yu, Fan; Zhang, Tao; Li, Pei; Li, Xiangjun.
Using typhoon data over the Northwestern Pacific (NWP) in 60 years (1950-2009), the interdecadal variations of typhoon frequency, track and intensity are statistically analyzed. The results showed that the frequency of typhoon over the NWP was high in 1960s and low in 1970s. From the late 1990s, the frequency is low again. The track of typhoon was mainly shifting, and the average track was at the southern NWP in 1960s and 1970s, but in recent 10 years, the track was at the northern NWP. The intensity of typhoon was strong in 1950s and 1960s, but becomes weak in recent 25 years. In high frequency periods of typhoon, the subtropical high of NWP was weak and its position appears easternly. The distribution of Sea Surface Temperature (SST) shows...

TRACEABILITY IN THE U.S. FOOD SUPPLY: ECONOMIC THEORY AND INDUSTRY STUDIES AgEcon
Golan, Elise H.; Krissoff, Barry; Kuchler, Fred; Calvin, Linda; Nelson, Kenneth E.; Price, Gregory K..
This investigation into the traceability baseline in the United States finds that private sector food firms have developed a substantial capacity to trace. Traceability systems are a tool to help firms manage the flow of inputs and products to improve efficiency, product differentiation, food safety, and product quality. Firms balance the private costs and benefits of traceability to determine the efficient level of traceability. In cases of market failure, where the private sector supply of traceability is not socially optimal, the private sector has developed a number of mechanisms to correct the problem, including contracting, third-party safety/quality audits, and industry-maintained standards. The best-targeted government policies for strengthening...
