Incidencia del gusano cogollero Spodoptera frugiperda Smit en Ocoyucan, Puebla y actividad bioinsecticida de semillas de Carica papaya L. y Trichilia havanensis Jacq. Colegio de Postgraduados

El maíz es el principal cultivo de México y constituye la base de la alimentación de la población. Entre los factores que limitan la producción en este cultivo están los insectos plaga, destacando los daños ocasionados por el gusano cogollero Spodoptera frugiperda. Se evaluaron en laboratorio los productos naturales de las semillas de Carica papaya y Trichilia havanensis sobre S. frugiperda y su enemigo natural Chrysoperla carnea. En invernadero, se evaluó el sulfato de amonio (13.6 g), urea (6 g), fosfonitrato (6.56 g) y la vermicomposta con tierra negra (1:3) en bolsas de plástico (6 kg) junto con el extracto acuoso de semillas de C. papaya al 20 % en plantas de maíz. Applying Retrospective Demographic Models to Assess Sustainable Use: the Maya Management of Xa’an Palms Ecology and Society
Xa’an palm (Sabal yapa) has been used to thatch traditional Maya houses for over 3000 years. In the Yucatan Peninsula, this palm has been introduced to pasturelands, maize fields (milpas), and homegardens. These and other traditional management systems are usually believed to be sustainable, but there is as yet little evidence to support this hypothesis. Periodic Closures as Adaptive Coral Reef Management in the Indo-Pacific Ecology and Society

This study explores the social, economic, and ecological context within which communities in Papua New Guinea and Indonesia use adaptive coral reef management. We tested whether periodic closures had positive effects on reef resources, and found that both the biomass and the average size of fishes commonly caught in Indo-Pacific subsistence fisheries were greater inside areas subject to periodic closures compared to sites with year-round open access. Surprisingly, both long-lived and short-lived species benefited from periodic closures. Assessing the spatial variability of soil chemical properties has become an important aspect of soil management strategies with a view to higher crop yields with minimal environmental degradation. This study was carried out at the Centro Experimental of the Instituto Agronomico, in Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil. The aim was to characterize the spatial variability of chemical properties of a Rhodic Hapludox on a recently bulldozer-cleaned area after over 30 years of coffee cultivation.
