Traceability in the U.S. Food Supply: An Application of Transaction Cost Analysis AgEcon
Wang, Chao-shih; Bravo, Jesus.
Suboptimal supply of food and agricultural traceability is framed in a transaction cost analysis. We propose a model that considers the variables of opportunism potential, agency costs, uncertainty, asset specificity, frequency, and transaction costs. The model is then applied to the development of a typology of feasible governance modes – market, hybrid, firm, or public bureau, considering levels of transaction costs and competencies of private firms. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed and future research opportunities are suggested.

Firms' strategies and voluntary traceability: an empirical analysis in Italian food chains AgEcon
Stranieri, Stefanella; Banterle, Alessandro.
In international food markets, voluntary traceability systems have increased their role in guaranteeing high safety and quality standards for the consumer. Such systems are also among the strategies firms employ to differentiate products and strengthen competitive advantage in both the national and international market. Voluntary traceability has significant implications on the organisation of economic relationships within food supply chains. This paper focuses on this aspect and analyses the effects of voluntary traceability on vertical co- ordination using a transaction cost perspective. The analysis makes reference to the Italian situation where the national standard organisation has introduced standard rules for voluntary traceability (UNI 10939; ISO...

CUSTOS DE MENSURAÇÃO E GOVERNANÇA NO AGRONEGÓCIO: UM ESTUDO DE CASOS MÚLTIPLOS NO SISTEMA AGROINDUSTRIAL DA CARNE BOVINA AgEcon
Caleman, Silvia Morales de Queiroz; Sproesser, Renato Luiz; Zylbersztajn, Decio.
Measurement Cost Theory (MCT) and Transaction Cost Economics (TCE) are both theoretical frameworks applied to the study of economic transactions. In the MCT, the attributes’ measurability is a key variable for identifying efficient modes of governance. The application of MCT to agri systems coordination is the context of this work, whose objective is to identify the governance mechanisms adopted in the beef chain. The transaction attributes of five beef chain subsystems and their degree of measurability (MCT) were analyzed according to TCE. An increasing gradient of coordination in function of the increase of asset specificity was observed, moving from one extreme of the spot market, exemplified by the commodity subsystem, to vertical integration,...

Transaktionskostentheoretisch basierte Analyse der Organisationsprobleme bei der Erschließung des Ökomarktes AgEcon
Dienel, Wolfram.
Market extension for organic products is restricted due to three types of organizational problems: (1) problems on resourcing (limited supply), (2) deficits in market structure and (3) problems of safeguarding special (pioneer) investment against opportunism. The market of organic products is characterized by high asset specificity and uncertainty of transactions. Solving problems of safeguarding will be the crucial issue if organic markets shall be extended on large scale. Safeguarding is not only achieved by vertical integration but as well by market-driven forms of organization if balancing factors such as equilibrium of asset specificity between market partners, their reputation and relational marketing prevent opportunism. The exact analysis of...

Small forests, big ambitions and a hard reality - Community Forestry in Nepal AgEcon
Rai, Chandra; Bigsby, Hugh R.; MacDonald, Ian.
Community forestry in Nepal is intended to reduce poverty by sustainable management of forests. Timber is one of the most high-value forest products, especially in the case of Sal (Shorea robusta) forests in the Terai region of Nepal. Despite having several advantages, including high value forests on fertile land, connection with transportation networks, and being close to regional markets, community forests in the Terai region produce little or no timber from their Sal forests. This research looks at what is affecting the production of Sal timber from community forests. Three aspects of community forest user groups (CFUG) are examined using institutional economics, transaction cost economics and micro-economics. First, the scale of CFUG operations is...

More Trust Instead of More Vertical Integration in the German Pork Production? Empirical Evidence and Theoretical Considerations AgEcon
Schulze, Birgit; Spiller, Achim; Theuvsen, Ludwig.
It is often hypothesized that contracts and vertical integration are paramount for the future competitiveness of meat supply chains. In this paper we review empirical evidence and theoretical reflections underlying this argumentation. We confront the contract and integration hypothesis with transaction cost considerations taking into account current technological and institutional developments and results from a survey in German pig production. It is concluded that more trust and commitment in non-contractual long-term relationships may be a viable alternative to stricter vertical coordination in meat supply chains.

Coordination Strategy Decisions in Sao Paulo's Fresh Produce Markets: An Empirical Validation of the Peterson, Wysocki & Harsh Framework AgEcon
Mainville, Denise Y.; Peterson, H. Christopher.
This paper provides an empirical validation of the Peterson, Wysocki & Harsh (PWH) framework for coordination strategy decisions, drawing evidence from four firms' procurement strategies in São Paulo's fresh produce markets. The results support the hypothesis that the PWH framework provides empirical and theoretical insight into firm managers' coordination decisions. The cases show how asset specificity and complementarity affect the costliness of coordination decisions, how this costliness drives the decision to change coordination strategies, and how feasibility and risk/return criteria also apply. Additional insights into coordination strategy decisions that were generated in applying the framework and their potential relevance to the framework are...

Designing Regional Systems of Biotechnology Regulation A Transaction Cost Approach to Regulatory Governance AgEcon
Birner, Regina; Linacre, Nicholas A..
Many developing countries are currently in the process of designing regulatory systems that should make it possible to use the potential of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) for agricultural development, while at the same time managing the risks for food safety and the environment that are potentially associated with these technologies. In view of the considerable costs associated with biotechnology regulation and the scarcity of biosafety specialists, there are processes in various regions of the developing world to establish regional systems of biotechnology regulation. So far, there are major knowledge gaps as to how regional systems of biotechnology regulation can be designed to be effective and efficient and to fulfill principles of good...

Various regions of the developing world are seeking to establish regional systems of biotechnology regulation. Institutional arrangements in the commercialization of electric energy from sugarcane biomass in the Brazilian midwest Rev. Econ. Sociol. Rural
Garcia,Marli da Silva; Vilpoux,Olivier François; Cereda,Marney Pascoli.
abstract: Reducing the use of fossil fuels and mitigating environmental impacts justifies the generation of electricity from renewable sources. In Brazil, sugarcane is the biomass that most generates electricity, and Mato Grosso do Sul state accounts for 10% of this electricity. Production can be traded in the spot market, long-term contracts regulated by the Federal Government, or free contracts between companies. Despite these options, only half of the sugarcane industries in Mato Grosso do Sul commercialize electricity. Based on Transaction cost economics, the objective of this work is to identify the most suitable governance structures used in the commercialization of electricity produced by the sugarcane plants in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul and...
