Modeling trophic interactions in Lake Kivu: What roles do exotics play? ArchiMer

An Ecopath model of the southern part of Lake Kivu, a deep African equatorial lake was constructed to quantitatively describe the possible impact of fish introductions in this ecosystem. This study is considered as an initial step in summarizing ecological and biological information, under a coherent framework, on this ecosystem. Fourteen compartments were considered. As a phytoplankton-based food web, it is observed that key food sources are not fully utilized as transfer efficiencies per trophic levels (TL) varies between 4.5 and 9.4%. Zooplankton plays a major role in transferring organic matter from TL1 to higher TLs due to the abundance of zooplanktivores. Comparative analysis of trophic structure and interactions of two tropical lagoons ArchiMer

A comparative study of the Ebrie lagoon (Ivory Coast) and Lake Nokoue (Benin) was made based on ecotrophic model outputs that describe each system's structure and functioning. Two models were constructed using the Ecopath software to differentiate main biomass flows in the systems. Results indicate that biomasses and productions in both ecosystems are concentrated in trophic levels (TL) 2 and 3. Higher TL biomasses and productions in Lake Nokoue compared to Ebrie lagoon may be explained by the presence of acadjas. High production per biomass (P/B) and food consumption per biomass (Q/B) values indicate the high productivity of these systems and the abundance of juveniles in most groups which utilize these systems as refuge zones and nurseries. The Normative Efficiency Ranking of Output and Export Subsidies under Costly and Imperfect Enforcement AgEcon

This paper builds on the literature on agricultural policy analysis under costly and imperfect enforcement by analyzing the effect of enforcement costs and noncompliance on the relative transfer efficiency of output and export subsidies. Analytical results show that, in addition to changing the incidence of output and export subsidies, relaxing the assumption of perfect and costless enforcement found in the traditional analysis of these policy instruments can affect their relative efficiency in transferring income to producers. The effect of enforcement issues is shown to depend on the way export subsidies are being administered and the size of the exporting country.

Mapping the Decoupling : Transfer Efficiency of the Single Farm Payment Scheme AgEcon

This paper focuses on the question of the transfer efficiency of the SFP scheme and represents graphically the results of an analytical framework with the seminal Surplus Transformation Curve initiated by Josling (1974) and developed by Gardner (1983). The special feature of the SFP scheme resides in the paradox that exists between the tradability of the entitlements and the activation constraint that creates a particular link to the land. The main result is that redistributive effects between landowners and farmers depend on the total number of entitlements, so they have to be considered as a lever to increase the transfer efficiency of the scheme.
