The participation of the kallikrein-kinin system, comprising the serine proteases kallikreins, the protein substrates kininogens and the effective peptides kinins, in some pathological processes like hypertension and cardiovascular diseases is still a matter of controversy. The use of different experimental set-ups in concert with the development of potent and specific inhibitors and antagonists for the system has highlighted its importance but the results still lack conclusivity. Background: Introgression of transgenes from crops to their wild species may enhance the adaptive advantage and therefore the invasiveness of and weedy forms. The study evaluated the effect of Africa Biofortified Sorghum (ABS) genes from ABS event 188 on the vegetative and reproductive features of the F2 populations derived from crosses with Sorghum bicolor subsp. drummondii. Results: F1 populations were obtained from reciprocal crosses involving ABS event 188 and its null segregant with inbred weedy parents from S. bicolor subsp. drummondii. Tobacco is the most commonly used plant for expression of transgenes from a variety of organisms, because it is easily grown and transformed, it provides abundant amounts of fresh tissue and has a well-established cell culture system. Many bacterial proteins involved in the synthesis of commercial products are currently engineered for production in tobacco. Bacterial enzymes synthesized in tobacco can enhance protection against abiotic stresses and diseases, and provide a system to test applied strategies such as phytoremediation. ABSTRACT: In 2005, there were 90 million hectares cultivated with GMOs by 8.5 million producers in 21 countries. In 2006, we commemorated 10 years of commercial production of GMOs. Currently there are 10 million farmers planting 100 million hectares. However, several points were raised concerning the environmental impact of GMOs: (1) risk of cultivated or wild hybrid become a harmful invasive species, (2) development of resistance by the massive use of technology, (3) possibility of vertical or horizontal gene flow, (4) adverse effect on non-target and beneficial species, (5) impacts on crop production systems. ABSTRACT: The use of transgenic plants on the human diet is a matter of great concern for the scientific community and the public in general. However, it is important to consider that before the release for human consumption, transgenic foods are submitted to an extensive series of rigorous tests. These tests includes the characterization of the expressed protein, in vitro digestibility and oral evaluation of acute toxicity in mice, studies of the structural homology of the protein with other known toxic proteins, allergenic potential and nutritional equivalence.
