SEPARABILIDADE DE FATORES DE PRODUÇÃO NA ESTIMAÇÃO DE FUNÇÕES TRANSLOG DE CUSTO AgEcon
Neto, Armando Chinelatto; Teixeira, Erly Cardoso.
The objective of this paper is to evaluate the aggregation of production factors in a variable called Inputs in coffee production in Brazil. A translog cost function and a separability test are used, based on estimates of the Allen-Uzawa partial elasticity of substitution. The results demonstrate the possibilities of input separability analyses. Input substitutability relations and other effects, such as exchange rate devaluation, on each production factor, can be examined.

THE IMPACT OF HACCP ON FACTOR DEMAND AND OUTPUT SUPPLY ELASTICITIES OF RED MEAT AgEcon
Nganje, William E.; Mazzocco, Michael A..
This study uses firm-level data during the hazard analysis critical control point (HACCP) implementation period (1997 - 2000) to analyze the impact of HACCP on input demand and output supply elasticities of firms in the red meat industry and derive implications for efficiency and moral hazard issues associated with the implementation of HACCP systems. The results show that HACCP causes factor demand for labor, material, and capital to be less inelastic while the elasticity of output supply did not change significantly. The interdependent relationships among HACCP and input prices and output result in efficiency gains.

WHEAT IMPORT DEMAND IN THE JAPANESE FLOUR MILLING INDUSTRY: A PRODUCTION THEORY APPROACH AgEcon
Mao, Weining; Koo, Won W.; Suomala, Jon P.; Sakurai, Takeshi.
The translog cost function is used to analyze import demand for wheat differentiated by class and country of origin in the Japanese wheat flour milling industry. Results indicate that U.S. wheat faces strong competition in the Japanese wheat market, but its multiple classes and end-use characteristics enable the United States to preserve the largest market share in Japan.

Economic analysis of water supply cost structure in the Middle Olifants sub-basin of South Africa AgEcon
Tsegai, Daniel W.; Linz, Teresa; Kloos, Julia.
Using data gathered from the National Treasury of South Africa, we examine the structure of water supply costs and tariffs of Water Service Authorities (WSAs) in the Middle Olifants sub-basin of South Africa. Using the translog cost function method, the marginal cost of water supply and economies of scale are estimated. Comparison of tariffs and marginal costs show that the estimated marginal cost is higher than the actual tariff paid by consumers. This implies that WSAs in the Middle Olifants are not charging enough to recover the costs of the water services. Thus, among other things, pricing of water at its marginal cost would partly assist in solving the cost recovery problem. Raised tariffs would in turn contribute to improved efficiency of water use....

The Cost of Food Safety Technologies in the Meat and Poultry Industries. AgEcon
Ollinger, Michael.
This paper uses plant-level micro-data from the 2002 Census of Manufactures, Food Safety Inspection Service, and the Economic Research Service in a translog cost function to examine the costs of effort devoted to the performance of sanitation and process control tasks and levels of food safety technology use. Results suggest that more effort devoted to performance of sanitation and process control tasks and greater use of food safety technologies modestly reduce long run costs.

Production structure and derived demand for factor inputs in smallholder dairying in Kenya AgEcon
Kavoi, Mutuku Muendo; Hoag, Dana L.; Pritchett, James G..
This study examined the production structure of smallholder dairy farms in Kenya’s marginal zones, using duality theory in production and costs. The restricted translog cost function was used to derive a system of six input share equations, which were estimated simultaneously with the cost equation by the iterative Zellner procedure. The Morishima elasticities of inputs and the price elasticities of factor demands were computed, and economies of scale were determined. The results indicated that the production structure is a fairly well integrated system of activities, despite scale diseconomies. The Morishima elasticities indicated that factor inputs are substitutable. For example, as prices of formal feeds remain relatively high, informal feeds may be...

A STRUCTURAL APPROACH TO ESTIMATING RATE OF RETURN EXPECTATIONS OF FARMERS AgEcon
Ahrendsen, Bruce L..
A dual cost function approach is developed as an alternative to time series and simplistic approaches for estimating farmers' expected operating rates of return on assets. A translog restricted cost function is estimated using data provided by 152 North Carolina dairy farmers over the period 1976 through 1986. The predicted costs from the fitted restricted cost function are used to construct estimates of farmers' expected operating rates of return on assets. The estimates from this structural approach explain more of the variation in observed rates than do time series estimates or sample mean observed rates.

Jobs Versus the Environment: An Industry-level Perspective AgEcon
Morgenstern, Richard D.; Pizer, William A.; Shih, Jhih-Shyang.
The possibility that workers could be adversely affected by environmental policies imposed on heavily regulated industries has led to claims of a "jobs versus the environment" trade-off by both business and labor leaders. The present research examines this claim at the industry level for four heavily polluting industries: pulp and paper mills, plastic manufacturers, petroleum refiners, and iron and steel mills. By focusing on labor effects across an entire industry, we construct a measure relevant to the concerns of key stakeholders, such as labor unions and trade groups. We decompose the link between environmental regulation and employment into three distinct components: factor shifts to more or less labor intensity, changes in total expenditures, and...
