ABSTRACT Schistossomiasis is a parasitic disease, caused by helminths of the genus Schistosoma and transmitted in Brazil by snails of the genus Biomphalaria. The municipality of Ouro Preto do Oeste, Rondônia, in the Brazilian Amazon Region, has unusually registered more than 900 cases of schistosomiasis in the last 10 years. The aim of this study was to investigate de potential of transmission of schsitosomiasis in Ouro Preto do Oeste. A total of 1,196 people in a risk area for the disease transmission were requested to answer a clinical-epidemiological survey and to collect feces samples for examination. All the samples that underwent examination resulted negative for S. mansoni. Two hundred and sixty-eight snails were collected in the locality of Ouro...

Possibility of vertical transmission of caprine arthritis-encephalitis virus in neonate kids Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Lara,M.C.C.S.H.; Birgel Junior,E.H.; Birgel,E.H..

Transmitted drug resistance in patients with acute/recent HIV infection in Brazil BJID
Ferreira,Ana Cristina G.; Coelho,Lara E.; Grinsztejn,Eduarda; Jesus,Carlos S. de; Guimarães,Monick L.; Veloso,Valdiléa G.; Grinsztejn,Beatriz; Cardoso,Sandra W..
Abstract Introduction: The widespread use of antiretroviral therapy increased the transmission of antiretroviral resistant HIV strains. Antiretroviral therapy initiation during acute/recent HIV infection limits HIV reservoirs and improves immune response in HIV infected individuals. Transmitted drug resistance may jeopardize the early goals of early antiretroviral treatment among acute/recent HIV infected patients. Methods: Patients with acute/recent HIV infection who underwent resistance test before antiretroviral treatment initiation were included in this analysis. HIV-1 sequences were obtained using an in house protease/reverse transcriptase genotyping assay. Transmitted drug resistance was identified according to the Stanford HIV Database for...

Transmission of dengue virus from deceased donors to solid organ transplant recipients: case report and literature review BJID
Rosso,Fernando; Pineda,Juan C.; Sanz,Ana M.; Cedano,Jorge A.; Caicedo,Luis A..
ABSTRACT Dengue fever is a vector-transmitted viral infection. Non-vectorial forms of transmission can occur through organ transplantation. We reviewed medical records of donors and recipients with suspected dengue in the first post-transplant week. We used serologic and molecular analysis to confirm the infection. Herein, we describe four cases of dengue virus transmission through solid organ transplantation. The recipients had positive serology and RT-PCR. Infection in donors was detected through serology. All cases presented with fever within the first week after transplantation. There were no fatal cases. After these cases, we implemented dengue screening with NS1 antigen detection in donors during dengue outbreaks, and no new cases were detected. In...

Papillomavirus infections in the oral and genital mucosa of asymptomatic women BJID
Oliveira,Ledy Horto Santos; Santos,Larissa Silva; Silva,Carolina Oliveira; Augusto,Everton Faccini; Neves,Felipe Piedade Gonçalves.
Abstract Human papillomavirus (HPV) has been found in several regions of the body, including the oral cavity. Recently, this virus has been associated with oropharyngeal cancer, but little is known about HPV transmission to the oral cavity. We carried out a study to investigate concurrent oral and cervical infections in 76 asymptomatic women attending a healthcare program. Demographic and behavior data were obtained through a structured questionnaire. Oral and cervical mucosa scrapings were collected and stored for DNA extraction. HPV DNA amplification was performed by polymerase chain reaction assay (PCR) using both primers My09/My11 and FAP59/64, followed by HPV typing with restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis (RFLP) and sequencing. The data...

Molecular genotyping and epidemiology of Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates obtained from inmates of correctional institutions of Campinas, Southeast Brazil BJID
Moreira-Oliveira,M.S.; Oliveira,H.B.; Pace,F.; Stehling,E.G.; Rocha,M.M.M.; Aily,D.C.G.; Brocchi,M.; Silveira,W.D..
The objective of this study was to investigate the possible transmission of tuberculosis among 39 inmates with positive Mycobacterium tuberculosis smears in four correctional institutions located in Campinas City, SP, Brazil over a 19-month period. Fifty-one M. tuberculosis isolates from these inmates were characterized according to the number of IS6110 insertion elements present in their genomic DNA. The number of insertion elements in M. tuberculosis isolates varied from two to twelve. The dendrogram of similarity resulted in the grouping the isolates in six main clusters. These results, associated to epidemiological data, suggested the transmission of tuberculosis among inmates of the same and different institutions inmates. Univariate analysis of...

Epidemiology of HIV/HCV coinfection in patients cared for at the Tropical Medicine Foundation of Amazonas BJID
Victoria,Marilú Barbieri; Victoria,Flamir da Silva; Torres,Kátia Luz; Kashima,Simone; Covas,Dimas Tadeu; Malheiro,Adriana.
The association of HIV infection and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection often occurs because both viruses share the same transmission routes, increasing the possibility of HIV/HCV coinfection. World prevalence greater than 30% of coinfected cases is estimated, and it can reach 90% depending on the transmission route. With the aim of determining the frequency and profile of HIV/HCV coinfected patients, a descriptive analysis was carried out with patients with HIV/AIDS whose serology was positive for hepatitis C virus (HCV), cared for at the Fundação de Medicina Tropical do Amazonas from 2000 to 2007. In the present study, of the 2,653 AIDS cases notified in SINAN, 1,582 patients underwent serology test for hepatitis C, and a frequency of 4.42% (n = 70) of...

Paoli,Juliana de; Wortmann,André Castagna; Klein,Mirelli Gabardo; Pereira,Vagner Reinaldo Zingalli Bueno; Cirolini,Adriana Maria; Godoy,Bibiane Armiliato de; Fagundes,Nelson Jurandi Rosa; Wolf,Jonas Michel; Lunge,Vagner Ricardo; Simon,Daniel.
ABSTRACT Background Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a major public health problem in Brazil. HBV endemicity is usually moderate to low according to geographic regions, and high prevalence of this virus has been reported in people of some specific Brazilian counties, including those with a strong influence of Italian colonization in southern Brazil. Analysis of HBV diversity and identification of the main risk factors to HBV infection are necessary to understand hepatitis B epidemiology in these high prevalence regions in southern Brazil. Objective To investigate epidemiological characteristics and HBV genotypes and subgenotypes circulating in a specific city with high HBV prevalence. Methods A cross-sectional study was performed with 102 HBV...

Overview of Zika virus (ZIKV) infection in regards to the Brazilian epidemic BJMBR
Slavov,S.N.; Otaguiri,K.K.; Kashima,S.; Covas,D.T..
Zika virus (ZIKV), a mosquito-borne flavivirus, belongs to the Flaviviridae family, genus Flavivirus. ZIKV was initially isolated in 1947 from a sentinel monkey in the Zika forest, Uganda. Little clinical importance was attributed to ZIKV, once only few symptomatic cases were reported in some African and Southeast Asiatic countries. This situation changed in 2007, when a large outbreak was registered on the Yap Island, Micronesia, caused by the Asian ZIKV lineage. Between 2013 and 2014, ZIKV spread explosively and caused many outbreaks in different islands of the Southern Pacific Ocean and in 2015 autochthonous transmission was reported in Brazil. Currently, Brazil is the country with the highest number of ZIKV-positive cases in Latin America. Moreover,...

Cross-transmission of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus in patients undergoing dialysis and kidney transplant BJMBR
Fram,D.; Castrucci,F.M.; Taminato,M.; Godoy-Martinez,P.; Freitas,M.C.S.; Belasco,A.; Sesso,R.; Pacheco-Silva,A.; Pignatari,A.C.; Barbosa,D..
The objective of this study was to investigate the occurrence of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE) cross-transmission between two patient groups (long-term dialysis and kidney transplant patients). Molecular typing, by automated ribotyping with the RiboPrinter Microbial Characterization System (Qualicon, USA), was used to analyze VRE isolates from 31 fecal samples of 320 dialysis patients and 38 fecal samples of 280 kidney transplant patients. Clonal spread of E. faecalis and E. casseliflavus was observed intragroup, but not between the two groups of patients. In turn, transmission of E. gallinarum and E. faecium between the groups was suggested by the finding of vancomycin-resistant isolates belonging to the same ribogroup in both dialysis and...

Rossi,Daise Aparecida; Fonseca,Belchiolina Beatriz; Melo,Roberta Torres de; Felipe,Gutembergue da Silva; Silva,Paulo Lourenço da; Mendonça,Eliane Pereira; Filgueiras,Ana Luzia Lauria; Beletti,Marcelo Emilio.
Campylobacter coli is an important species involved in human cases of enteritis, and chickens are carriers of the pathogen mainly in developing country. The current study aimed to evaluate the transmission of C. coli and its pathogenic effects in chicken embryos. Breeder hens were inoculated intra-esophageally with C. coli isolated from chickens, and their eggs and embryos were analyzed for the presence of bacteria using real-time PCR and plate culture. The viability of embryos was verified. In parallel, SPF eggs were inoculated with C. coli in the air sac; after incubation, the embryos were submitted to the same analysis as the embryos from breeder hens. In embryos and fertile eggs from breeder hens, the bacterium was only identified by molecular methods;...

Guinea pigs experimentally infected with vaccinia virus replicate and shed, but do not transmit the virus Ciência Rural
Cargnelutti,Juliana Felipetto; Wendlant,Adriéli; Weiblen,Rudi; Flores,Eduardo Furtado.
The origin of vaccinia viruses (VACV) associated with vesicular disease in cattle and humans in Southeast Brazil remains uncertain, yet the role of wild species in virus transmission has been suggested. This study investigated the susceptibility and transmission potential by guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) - phylogenetically close to an abundant Brazilian rodent (Cavia aperea) - to two VACV strains (P1V and P2V) isolated from an outbreak of cutaneous disease in horses in Southern Brazil. Eight guinea pigs inoculated intranasally with P1V and P2V (10(6) TCID50.ml-1) did not develop clinical signs, but six animals shed virus in nasal secretions (day 1 to 9 post-inoculation - pi), developed viremia (between days 1 and 10 pi) and seroconverted to VACV. In spite...

Promoting communication, participation, and learning with regard to organic food products: a communication theoretical approach Ecology and Society
Kastberg, Peter; Aarhus University, Business and Social Sciences, Business Communication; pk@asb.dk.
The market for organic foods is growing, however, the proportion of consumers buying organic foods is still considered low. Research shows that a significant barrier to consumers purchasing more organic foods is lack of information. This leads the relevant body of research to call for better communication around organic foods. The same body of research, however, neither questions what good communication surrounding organic foods is, nor what would make it better. Applying the communication theoretical formats of transmission, interaction, and coaction, respectively, onto instances of organic communication activities, I will discuss to what extent each format encourages consumer participation and learning. Transmission, typically in the form of monologuous...

Bonamia ostreae-induced mortalities in one-year old European flat oysters Ostrea edulis: experimental infection by cohabitation challenge ArchiMer
Lallias, Delphine; Arzul, Isabelle; Heurtebise, Serge; Ferrand, Sylvie; Chollet, Bruno; Robert, Maeva; Beaumon, Andy; Boudry, Pierre; Morga, Benjamin; Lapegue, Sylvie.
Bonamiosis is a parasitic disease (causative agent: Bonamia ostreae) affecting the European flat oyster Ostrea edulis, responsible for a drastic decline in its aquaculture production. Selective breeding programs for resistance to bonamiosis have been undertaken to counter this disease. In the present study, a 6-month cohabitation challenge experiment was performed in order to transmit the disease from wild oysters injected with the parasite to two tested families of oysters (20 and 8-month old at the beginning of the experiment, with different genetic backgrounds) originating from a selective breeding program developed by IFREMER in France. Mortalities were checked daily and ventricular heart smears were performed on dying or moribund oysters to detect the...
