The aim of this study was to evaluate the insecticide activity of diatomaceous earth (DE), at different temperatures, on two populations of Tribolium castaneum and Rhyzopertha dominica previously diagnosed as resistant and susceptible to phosphine. The efficiency of DE in the control of the insects was evaluated at temperatures of 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 ± 2 ºC. The experiments were accomplished in Petri dishes containing 35 g of whole-wheat grain treated with DE in the dose of 1.0 kg t-1. The control was constituted by untreated wheat grain. Each Petri dish was infested with 30 adult insects. Insect mortality was registered seven days after the beginning of the bioassays. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design with three... |

The expansion of dryeration may impose a further problem for insect control with protectants - the high grain temperatures during insecticide spraying. To assess the impact of this procedure on insecticide activity, maize grains at different temperatures (25, 30, 35, 40 and 45 °C) were sprayed with pirimiphos-methyl. Residue analyses were carried out every 30 days and insecticide biological activity towards Sitophilus zeamais and Tribolium castaneum was assessed every 15 days throughout the experimental period of 90 days. Insect mortality was evaluated after 48 h. Pirimiphos-methyl residue decreased with increased storage time and grain temperature during spraying. Similar trends were also observed for mortality of S. zeamais and T. castaneum, which... |

Duration of the pupal stage, toxic activity and nutritional indices induced by oleanolic acid (I), maslinic acid (II), and daucosterol (III) isolated from the native plant Junellia aspera and chemical derivatives, were determinated on larvae, and adults of Tribolium castaneum (Herbst). The current study shows that these triterpenes acts as acute toxic compounds when were applied topically and/or incorporated into the food of the red flour beetle. Nevertheless, no activity related with the nutritional status of this insect was produced. |

Efficacy of essential oils from rhizomes of Alpinia conchigera, Zingiber zerumbet and Curcumazedoaria to repel Sitophilus zeamais and Tribolium castaneum at 0.003, 0.03, 0.15, 0.31, 0.63 and 1.27 μL/cm2 by Petri-dish choice bioassay indicated that the most efficiency was found in C. zedoaria oils (91.5%) followed by Z. zerumbet oils (89.4%) and A. conchigera oils (78.1%). For T. castaneum, A. conchigera oil (97.4%) was the most effective one, followed by C. zedoaria oil (95.3%) and Z. zerumbet oil (93.0%), respectively. Furthermore, the residual of three essential oils were also estimated at 1.27 μL/cm2 and the results demonstrated that Alpinia conchigera and Z. zerumbet oils strongly repelled both insects till the end of experiment (8 days) while C.... |

The objectives of this work were the study of the volatile chemical composition of essential oils (EO’s) from Bursera graveolens obtained in the locality of Malagana, municipality of Mahates, Bolívar, Colombia, as well as to evaluate their repellent and fumigant properties. EO’s were extracted by hydro-distillation and characterized by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The major compounds found in B. graveolens were limonene (42.2%), pulegone (20.9%), carvone (7.5%), caryophyllene (4.1%), and trans-carveol (3.8%). The repellent activity of EO’s was determined by the area preference method, where the EO of B. graveolens presented repellent activity against the Tribolium castaneum weevil at a concentration of 1 at 2% and 4 hours of exposure (88.1... |

The essential oil from the fresh leaves of Kyllinga pumila (Michx) was obtained by hydrodistillation and characterized by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Twenty-eight volatile compounds were identified, major constituents of the oil were Methyl E,E-10,11-epoxyfarnesoate (43.8%), β-elemene (12.5%), Z-caryophyllene (11.3%), germacrene D (7.1%) and E-caryophyllene (5.6%). Repellent and fumigant activities of the oil against Tribolium castaneum Herbst (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), were done using the area preference method. Additionally, we studied their antioxidant and phytotoxic effects. Essential oils exhibited a dose-dependent repellent activity, with values 90% at the applied concentration (0.01%), for both two and four hour’s exposure.... |

The development of natural insecticides would help to decrease the negative impact of synthetic insecticides. Fumigant toxicity of essential oil of Tagetes filifolia Lag (Asterales: Asteraceae) and its major compounds were evaluated against Tribolium castaneum Herbst (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae). The essential oils were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The essential oil and (E)-anethole were the most toxic at 24 h against adult insects (CL50 = 2.4 y 2.6 µL/mL water, respectively). Changes in the products of lipid peroxidation were evidenced by an increase in malondialdehyde content. Acetylcholinesterase activity in vitro, of T. castaneum adults, was also reported. (E)-anethole and estragole showed similar acetylcholinesterase inhibition (54... |
