Inhibitory effects of Melia azedarach L. extracts on the growth of Trichomonas vaginalis : Ultrastructural changes of Trichomonas vaginalis treated by Melia azedarach L OAK
Lee, Yun Sik; Chung, In Bai; Choi, Won Hyung; Cho, Yoo Jung; Chu, Jong Phil; Min, Byung-Il; Shin, Eun-Hee.
Meliae cortex (Melia azedarach Linne. var. japonica Makino, M. toosendan Siebold & Zucc) is one of the herbs used in oriental medicine for the treatment of various types of vaginitis. The present study was performed to examine the effects of Meliae cortex extracts on the growth and fine structure of Trichomonas vaginalis (T. vaginalis). Meliae cortex dose-dependently reduced the viability of T. vaginalis. In the electron microscopy study, we also observed the ultrastructural changes of T. vaginalis following the treatment with Meliae cortex. One to two hours after the addition of the extract of Meliae cortex, the movement of flagella and axostyle decreased, but the cell death did not occur. The fine structure of the cytoplasm was changed 30 min to 2...

Evaluación del fijador-colorante azul de metileno para el diagnóstico directo de Trichomonas vaginalis ABCL
Costamagna,Sixto Raúl; Dupin,Javier; Vaylet,Susana; Pellegrino,Patricia.

Strategies by which some pathogenic trichomonads integrate diverse signals in the decision-making process Anais da ABC (AABC)
LÓPEZ,LUCIENE BOTTENTUIT; BRAGA,MARIANE BANDEIRA DE MELO; ORTEGA LÓPEZ,JAIME; ARROYO,ROSSANA; SILVA FILHO,FERNANDO COSTA E.
The interaction between each one of Trichomonas vaginalis and Tritrichomonas foetus with their hosts is a complex process in which components associated to the cell surfaces of both parasites and host epithelial cells, and also to soluble components found in vaginal/urethral secretions, are involved. Either cytoadhesion or the cytotoxicity exerted by parasites to host cells can be dictated by virulence factors such as adhesins, cysteine proteinases, laminin-binding proteins, integrins, integrin-like molecules, a cell detachment factor, a pore-forming protein, and glycosidases among others. How trichomonads manipulate informations from the extracellular medium, transduce such informations, and respond to them by stimulating the activities of some surface...

Trichomonas vaginalis infection among young pregnant women in Brazil BJID
Miranda,Angelica E.; Pinto,Valdir M.; Gaydos,Charlotte A..
Our goal was to determine the prevalence of Trichomonas vaginalis and its associated risk factors in parturient women aged 15–24 years attending Brazilian public maternity units. Participants answered a demographic, behavioral, and clinical data questionnaire. A sample of urine was screened for T. vaginalis. A total 299 women participated in this study. The prevalence rate of T. vaginalis was 7.7% (95% CI: 4.7–10.7%). The factors associated with T. vaginalis were use of illicit drugs OR = 4.70 (95% CI: 1.63–13.56, p = 0.004)] and not attending antenatal care OR = 5.15 (95% CI: 1.15–23.25, p = 0.032)]. These data demonstrate that it is important to discuss how to include routine screening for T. vaginalisduring antenatal care in Brazil.

Double-stranded RNA viral infection in Cuban Trichomonas vaginalis isolates BJID
Fraga,Jorge; Rojas,Lázara; Sariego,Idalia; Fernández-Calienes,Aymé.
Trichomonas vaginalis can be infected with double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) viruses designated T. vaginalis virus (TVV), which may have important implications for trichomonal virulence and disease pathogenesis. We tested for TVV in 40 fresh T. vaginalis isolates from Cuban patients by total extraction of nucleic acids (DNA and RNA). TVV was detected in 22 (55%) of the 40 T. vaginalis isolates. This gives an estimate of the infection rate of Cuban T. vaginalis isolates by the dsRNA virus. Future research should focus on the association between trichomonosis symptoms and the presence of TVV.

Cargnin,Simone Tasca; Staudt,Andressa Finkler; Menezes,Camila; Azevedo,Ana Paula de; Fialho,Saara Neri; Tasca,Tiana; Teles,Carolina Bioni Garcia; Gnoatto,Simone Baggio.
Trichomonas vaginalis and Leishmania spp. are protozoal species responsible for millions of cases of parasitic diseases worldwide. Considering the potential of natural products and the need for more effective and less toxic alternatives to treat trichomoniasis and leishmaniasis, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of two series of triterpenes derivatives with different modifications at C-3 and C-28 positions of the ursolic acid (UA) and betulinic acid (BA) against trophozoites of Trichomonas vaginalis and promastigotes forms of Leishmania (L.) amazonensis. The compounds modified just at C-3 were the most active. The 3β-acetyl betulinic acid (1b) reduced the trophozoites viability of T. vaginalis at 74%, followed by the 3-oxo ursolic acid and 3-oxo...
