The observation of trophic interactions such as predation provide valuable information to model food webs and better understand ecosystem functioning. Such information is crucial for rare and endangered species in order to adapt management measures and ensure their conservation. However, trophic interactions are rarely observed in the marine realm, even for well-known or widespread species. During a scientific cruise in the Scattered Islands (Southwestern Indian Ocean), we observed endangered green turtle hatchlings (Chelonia mydas) in the gut content of two subadults two-spots red snappers (Lutjanus bohar). This trophic link involving emblematic species has not been previously described. The two-spots red snapper is a widespread coral reef fish in the... |

Sampling was carried out during 1970 at 22 stations from 72 degree -62 degree N; the sampling period varied from 21 minutes - 42minutes. 12 species of zooplankton were recovered consisting of specimens of copepods, euphausiids, chaetognathes, medusae, amphipods, pteropods and decapods. They were most abundant in the central zone, especially in 2 areas of maximum concentration (where the catch exceeded 100 cm super(3)) located 72 degree N and 67 degree N. Fish captured included young cod, rockfish and halibut; they were found mostly around these areas of maximum zooplankton concentrations. Only immature fish were recovered in this region; the adults had deserted these waters due to unusual and permanent low temperature water in the superficial layers. |

ABSTRACT Anagrus amazonensis Triapitsyn, Querino & Feitosa (Hymenoptera, Mymaridae) is a parasitoid that uses aquatic insect eggs as a host for the development of its immature stages. The objectives of this study are to record the interaction between A. amazonensis and its hosts and the aquatic plants used by these hosts to lay their eggs. Field work was conducted in floodplain lakes and upland (terra firme) streams, in four municipalities in Amazonas State, Brazil, where aquatic plants were scanned for the presence of aquatic insect eggs. In the laboratory, eggs were maintained in plastic containers with water until the emergence of the parasitoid or of the first instar insect. A total of 1223 adults of A. amazonensis emerged from eggs of Hemiptera,... |
