Observations and comments on the diatom Stephanodiscus minutulus (Kützing) Cleve & Möller (Bacillariophyceae) found for the first time in Chile from bottom sediments collected in Lake Laja Gayana Botánica
Cruces,Fabiola; Rivera,Patricio; Urrutia,Roberto.
This study reports the presence of the diatom Stephanodiscus minutulus (Kützing) Cleve & Möller for the frst time in Chilean continental waters; it is a taxon reported in many aquatic systems in Europe and North America and there are only scanty records from South America (Argentina). The species was found in a sedimentary profle collected from Lake Laja (Andes Mountains), Central Chile. The principal morphological features of S. minutulus are described, and comments about its relationship with other closely related taxa are given.

Seasonal changes of water quality in a tropical shallow and eutrophic reservoir in the metropolitan region of Recife (Pernambuco-Brazil) Anais da ABC (AABC)
OLIVEIRA,FÁBIO H.P.C. DE; ARA,ANDRÉ L.S. CAPELA E; MOREIRA,CESAR H.P.; LIRA,OSMAN O.; PADILHA,MARIA DO ROSÁRIO F.; SHINOHARA,NEIDE K.S..
This study investigated the water quality in an urban eutrophic reservoir in Northeastern Brazil, considering the influence of seasonality. Monthly, samples were collected in the sub-surface reservoir. The following abiotic variables were analyzed: temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, apparent color, turbidity, conductivity, fluoride, total nitrogen, chlorides, total dissolved solids, total hardness, iron, copper, manganese, aluminum, chlorophyll-a and phaeophytin. Total and thermotolerant coliforms were analyzed according to APHA (2012). Cyanobacteria density was quantified through its biomass. The data were analyzed using one- way ANOVA and Pearson correlation test. Higher values mean phytoplankton biomass (26.3mm3.L–1) occurred in the dry season,...

Trophic state and microorganisms community of major sub-basins of the middle Rio Doce basin, southeast Brazil BABT
Petrucio,Mauricio Mello; Medeiros,Adriana Oliveira; Rosa,Carlos Augusto; Barbosa,Francisco Antônio Rodrigues.
Total phosphorus concentration was used to define the trophic state of the main sub-basins of the middle Rio Doce, in Minas Gerais State (southeast Brazil) and physical, chemical, and microbiological variables of water were analyzed during 2000 to 2001. The study evaluated changes in water quality caused by seasonality and human activities. Water temperature, conductivity, pH, total alkalinity, dissolved oxygen, and concentrations of NH4-N, NO2-N, NO3-N, total-N, PO4-P, total-P, DOC, and chlorophyll-a were measured in seven rivers stretches (sampling stations). Total yeasts, faecal and total coliforms, and heterotrophic bacteria were also determined. The studied areas were considered to be under oligotrophic to eutrophic conditions. The variables that...

Bacteria and phytoplankton production rates in eight river stretches of the middle Rio Doce hidrographic basin (southeast Brazil) BABT
Petrucio,Mauricio Mello; Barbosa,Francisco Antônio R.; Thomaz,Sidinei Magela.
Measurements of bacterial secondary production (BSP), together with primary phytoplanktonic production (PPP) were conducted during dry and rainy seasons, in eight rivers of different orders submitted to different degrees of human impacts (different trophic degree). We aimed to determine and compare the importance of BSP and PPP in carbon fixation in these different lotic ecosystems. Our results showed that the Ipanema River was the most modified system by anthropogenic effluents inputs. These inputs altered the trophic degree and BSP rates of these streams and rivers.

Comparative study of the zooplankton composition of six lacustrine ecosystems in Central Brazil during the dry season BJB
STARLING,F. L. do R. M..
Zooplankton community from six lacustrine ecosystems located in Federal District (Central Brazil) was studied based on samples collected during the dry season (July to September). A total of 71 taxa were recorded: 44 rotifers, 17 cladocerans and 10 copepods. The highest number of zooplankton species was recorded in oligotrophic Bonita Pond (32 species) and the lowest number in hypertrophic waste stabilisation ponds (7 species). This tendency of decreasing the diversity with increasing trophic level was consistent with a cluster analysis of the samples based on Sorensen index of similarity. From the overall similarity dendrogram, two groups of ecosystems were distinguished: one containing the natural ponds Bonita and Formosa and the other comprising the...
