Mitigation of Mombasa Grass ( Megathyrsus maximus ) Dependence on Nitrogen Fertilization as a Function of Inoculation with Azospirillum brasilense Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Leite,Rubson da Costa; Santos,Antonio Clementino dos; Santos,José Geraldo Donizetti dos; Leite,Robson da Costa; Oliveira,Leonardo Bernardes Taverny de; Hungria,Mariangela.
ABSTRACT Using biological inputs to improve the efficiency of nitrogen fertilizers represents an alternative for the cultivation of grasses in tropical regions. Azospirillum brasilense is a species of plant growth promoting bacteria widely studied and used in inoculants. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the performance of Mombasa grass ( Megathyrsus maximus ) in association with A. brasilense and nitrogen (N) fertilization. The study was conducted under field conditions in Araguaína-Tocantins State, between December 2017 and May 2018. The treatments were arranged in randomized blocks, in a 5 × 2 factorial arrangement, with five doses of N fertilization (0, 25, 50, 75, and 100 kg ha-1) combined with two inoculation treatments (inoculated and non...

Aerobic fungi in the rumen fluid from dairy cattle fed different sources of forage R. Bras. Zootec.
Almeida,Patrícia Natalicia Mendes de; Duarte,Eduardo Robson; Abrão,Flávia Oliveira; Freitas,Cláudio Eduardo Silva; Geraseev,Luciana Castro; Rosa,Carlos Augusto.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the aerobic microbiota of the rumen fluid from Holstein cows and heifers fed different tropical forage in the north of Minas Gerais, Brazil. A total of 30 samples of rumen fluid from cows fed with sorghum silage were collected: 32 from cows fed Brachiaria brizantha, 12 from heifers that received sorghum silage and 11 from calves fed sugar cane foliage. The culture was carried out using the agar Sabouraud medium and the solid C medium, containing microcrystalline cellulose. The isolated mycelial fungi were identified by microculture technique and yeasts by micromorphological and physical-chemical analysis. Specific identification for yeasts was confirmed by ribosomal DNA sequence analysis. The presence of fungal...

Effects of supplementation frequency on the ruminal fermentation and enteric methane production of beef cattle grazing in tropical pastures R. Bras. Zootec.
Canesin,Roberta Carrilho; Berchielli,Telma Teresinha; Messana,Juliana Duarte; Baldi,Fernando; Pires,Alexandre Vaz; Frighetto,Rosa Toyoko Shiraishi; Fiorentini,Giovani; Reis,Ricardo Andrade.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the characteristics of ruminal fermentation and enteric methane production in beef cattle subjected to different supplementation frequencies while grazing on Brachiaria brizanthacv. Marandu pastures. Nine cattle (325±65.7 kg BW) fitted with ruminal and duodenal cannulas were used in the ruminal fermentation study, and 12 cattle (399±32.6 kg BW) were used in the enteric methane production study. The treatments included supplementation once daily, supplementation once daily except Saturdays and Sundays, or supplementation on alternate days. The supplementation was equivalent to 10 g kg−1 BW day−1 for all treatments. The design employed was completely randomized with three treatments and three replications. When all...

The aim of this study was to evaluate protein supplementation on the performance of steers grazing on Mombaça grass and receiving chopped sugar cane tops at a level of 0.80% of live weight (dry matter (DM) basis), during the dry season. Forage availability and quality of the experimental pasture were also evaluated. Thirty-two Nellore steers, weighing 300 kg (± 25.80) of initial live weight, eight per treatment, were used. The statistical design was completely randomized and each steer group was allocated to one of four paddocks (1.125 ha paddock-1). All steers received a protein supplement at 0.40% of live weight (DM basis) and the four treatments consisted of the following four crude protein (CP) concentrations in supplements: 12.5, 25.0, 37.5...

Beef cattle performance on signal grass pastures deferred and fertilized with nitrogen Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Amorim,P.L.; Fonseca,D.M.; Santos,M.E.R.; Pimentel,R.M.; Rodrigues,J.P.P.; Chizzotti,F.H.M.; Vitor,C.G..
ABSTRACT The effect of four nitrogen levels (0, 40, 80 and 120kg N ha-1), applied before deferment on the beef cattle production and structural variables on Urochloa decumbens (signal grass) were assessed from January to October 2012 and from January to September 2013. A randomized block design with three replicates was adopted, in an arrangement of repeated measures in time (grazing period). An interaction effect between nitrogen level and grazing period was observed on extended-plant height and herbage mass. As the nitrogen levels were increased, extended-plant height, herbage mass, total herbage allowance, and efficiency of conversion of fertilizer into herbage were increased. Throughout the grazing period, pasture height, extended-plant height,...

Performance of crossbred lactating cows at grazing in response to nitrogen supplementation and different levels of concentrate feed Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Gutierrez,G.S.; Lana,R.P.; Teixeira,C.R.V.; Veloso,C.M.; Rennó,L.N..
ABSTRACT The performance of crossbred (1/2 Holstein x Zebu) cows supplemented on Brachiaria decumbens pasture during the wet-dry transition period was evaluated. Eight cows with 497±50kg, during third and fourth lactations and after the lactation peak were distributed in two 4 x 4 Latin squares. The treatments consisted of a factorial with two types of mineral supplements (nitrogenous and mineral salt) and two levels of concentrate (0.3 and 0.6% body weight (BW)/cow/day), based on corn and soybean meal (60:40), and supplied during the morning and afternoon milking. The experiment lasted 56 days, divided into four periods of 14 days, with seven days for adaptation and seven for data collection. No interaction (P> 0.05) was observed between the...
