A NEW RECORD FOR THE MILK FROG Trachycephalus coriaceus (ANURA: HYLIDAE) FROM TELES PIRES RIVER, SOUTH AMAZONIA, BRAZIL Acta biol.Colomb.
FERREIRA,Vanessa Gonçalves; THALER,Rafaela; FOLLY,Henrique; DA SILVA,Leandro Alves.
ABSTRACT Herein, we report a new record of the milk frog Trachycephalus coriaceus for the Brazilian southern Amazonia and provide an updated geographic distribution map. We collected one specimen of T. coriaceus on 8 november 2016, during a nocturnal survey inside a dense ombrophilous forest in the right bank of the Teles Pires River, municipality ofJacareacanga, southern of Pará State. The record of T. coriaceus to Jacareacanga is the first to the State. The disjoint geographic distribution of this species along de Amazonia may just reflect the paucity of amphibian knowledge throughout this biome and the difficulty to detect this species in the field, given its explosive reproductive behavior.

Vertical distribution of epiphytic bryophytes in Atlantic Forest fragments in northeastern Brazil Acta Botanica
Oliveira,Hermeson Cassiano de; Oliveira,Sylvia Mota de.
ABSTRACT The microclimatic gradient established from the forest understory to the canopy provides a range of different conditions for the establishment of bryophytes along the height of a tree. We investigated epiphytic bryophyte communities of four fragments of Atlantic Forest with the aim of describing their vertical zonation and assessing differentiation among the communities of the different fragments. In each fragment, five host trees were selected from which bryophyte samples were collected in four height zones from the base to the canopy. Furthermore, 10 plots were demarcated in each fragment where bryophytes were collected from the understory. In total, 114 bryophyte species were found on the 20 sampled phorophytes, plus an additional 51 species in...

Cuticular n-alkane in leaves of seven Neotropical species of the family Lecythidaceae: a contribution to chemotaxonomy Acta Botanica
Silva,Rejane Maria da; Ribeiro,Rayane de Tasso Moreira; Souza,Renata Janaína Carvalho de; Oliveira,Antônio Fernando Morais de; Silva,Suzene Izídio da; Gallão,Maria Izabel.
ABSTRACT Biosynthesized from very long-chain fatty acid wax precursors, n-alkanes make a valuable contribution to the taxonomy of plants. The alkane components of foliar epicuticles of seven Neotropical species of Lecythidaceae were investigated: Bertholletia excelsa, Cariniana legalis, Couroupita guianensis, Eschweilera alvimii, Eschweilera ovata, Gustavia augusta and Lecythis pisonis. Specimens were collected in the metropolitan area of Recife, Pernambuco, and their n-alkane fractions were analyzed by gas chromatography. The chemical relationships among the species were then evaluated using cophenetic correlation and UPGMA. Among the seven species, a total of 15 n-alkanes, with 21-35 carbon atoms, were identified and formed a consistent group of B....

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal communities in soils under three phytophysiognomies of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest Acta Botanica
Duarte,Lorrane Marques; Bertini,Simone Cristina Braga; Stürmer,Sidney Luiz; Lambais,Marcio Rodrigues; Azevedo,Lucas Carvalho Basilio.
ABSTRACT Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) play an important role in plant community productivity and structure, and so studying the factors that affect the diversity and structure of this fungal community is important for understanding their ecology in tropical forests. We investigated AMF spore communities and root colonization under three forest phytophysiognomies (Restinga Forest, REF; Lowland Ombrophilous Dense Forest, LLF; and Montane Ombrophilous Dense Forest, MTF). Spore abundance was lowest in LLF and highest in REF, with no statistical differences relative to MTF. Spore diversity indices and root colonization rates were not statistically different among the phytophysiognomies. However, principal components analysis revealed that AMF community...

All green, but equal? Morphological traits and ecological implications on spores of three species of mosses in the Brazilian Atlantic forest Anais da ABC (AABC)
MACIEL-SILVA,ADAÍSES S.; SILVA,FLÁVIA C.L. DA; VÁLIO,IVANY F.M..
Spores of the tropical mosses Pyrrhobryum spiniforme, Neckeropsis undulata and N. disticha were characterized regarding size, number per capsule and viability. Chemical substances were analyzed for P. spiniforme and N. undulata spores. Length of sporophyte seta (spore dispersal ability) was analyzed for P. spiniforme. Four to six colonies per species in each site (lowland and highland areas of an Atlantic Forest; Serra do Mar State Park, Brazil) were visited for the collection of capsules (2008 – 2009). Neckeropsis undulata in the highland area produced the largest spores (ca. 19 µm) with the highest viability. The smallest spores were found in N. disticha in the lowland (ca. 13 µm). Pyrrhobryum spiniforme produced more spores per capsule in the highland...

Spatial resolution influence on the identification of land cover classes in the Amazon environment Anais da ABC (AABC)
PONZONI,FLÁVIO J.; GALVÃO,LÊNIO S.; EPIPHANIO,JOSÉ C.N..
To evaluate the role played by the spatial resolution in distinguishing land cover classes in the Amazon region, different levels of spatial resolution (60, 100, 120, 200 and 250 meters) were simulated from a Landsat_5 Thematic Mapper (TM) image. Thematic maps were produced by visual interpretation from the original (30 x 30 meters) and simulated set of images. The map legend included primary forest, old and young woody secondary succession, and non-forest. The results indicated that for the discrimination between primary forest and non-forest, spatial resolution did not have great influence for pixel size equal or lower than 200 meters. The contrary was verified for the identification of old and young woody secondary vegetation due to their occurrence in...

Diversity, community structure and conservation status of an Atlantic Forest fragment in Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Cysneiros,Vinicius Costa; Mendonça-Junior,Joaquim de Oliveira; Gaui,Tatiana Dias; Braz,Denise Monte.
The State of Rio de Janeiro still holds unknown portions of the Atlantic Forest, which represent gaps in the knowledge of this ecosystem. Paracambi and neighbor municipal districts comprise a vast stretch of virtually unknown forest that makes up part of the Serra do Mar biodiversity corridor. The following study describes the tree community structure in a stretch of the ombrophilous Atlantic Forest, in the Parque Natural Municipal do Curió (Curio MNP), Paracambi, Rio de Janeiro, which serves as the basis to evaluate species diversity and conservation status. The altitudes in the area ranges from 100 to 690 m and the climate varies from mild subtropical to tropical hot and humid. Forty plots (10x10m) were randomly placed along the area, where all the stems...

Eusocial Apidae in tropical insular region BABT
Lorenzon,Maria Cristina Affonso; Conde,Marilena de Menezes Silva; Barbosa,Celso Guimarães.
This study examined species richness and relative abundance of eusocial Apidae in an insular region of rain-forest, southeastern Brazil. Sampling took place during one year, using an standardized method with entomological net, at sites of secondary growth habitats surrounded by Atlantic rain-forest. Thirteen species of eusocial Apidae were netted at flowers, over 80% of the captured individuals were meliponine species, although the presence of Apis mellifera, commonly dominant in Brazilian habitats. Foraging activity of these bee species were essentially non-seasonal, apparently affected by high humidity. The patterns in abundance and species richness observed in Ilha Grande differed with other studies conducted at tropical islands, which were...

The Multiple Use of Tropical Forests by Indigenous Peoples in Mexico: a Case of Adaptive Management Ecology and Society
Moguel, Patricia; ;.
The quest for an appropriate system of management for tropical ecosystems necessitates that ecologists consider the accumulated experiences of indigenous peoples in their long-term management of local resources, a subject of current ethnoecology. This paper provides data and empirical evidence of an indigenous multiple-use strategy (MUS) of tropical forest management existing in Mexico, that can be considered a case of adaptive management. This conclusion is based on the observation that some indigenous communities avoid common modernization routes toward specialized, unsustainable, and ecologically disruptive systems of production, and yet probably achieve the most successful tropical forest utilization design, in terms of biodiversity conservation,...

GPS and GIS Methods in an African Rain Forest: Applications to Tropical Ecology and Conservation Ecology and Society
Dominy, Nathaniel J; University of Hong Kong; njdominy@hkusua.hku.hk; Duncan, Brean; Dynamac Corporation, Kennedy Space Center; DuncaBW@kscems.ksc.nasa.gov.
Since the completion of the Navstar Global Positioning System (GPS) in 1995, the integration of GPS and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) technology has expanded to a great number of ecological and conservation applications. In tropical rain forest ecology, however, the technology has remained relatively neglected, despite its great potential. Notwithstanding cost, this is principally due to (1) the difficulty of quality satellite reception beneath a dense forest canopy, and (2) a degree of spatial error unacceptable to fine-scale vegetation mapping. Here, we report on the technical use of GPS/GIS in the rain forest of Kibale National Park, Uganda, and the methodology necessary to acquire high-accuracy spatial measurements. We conclude that the...

BASTOS, J. B.; WILMS, F. W. W.; TEIXEIRA, L. B.; CESAR J..

Soil termites in primary forest, secondary forest and an agroforestry plantation system in central Amazonia. Infoteca-e
MARTIUS, C.; GOMES, E.; GARCIA, M. V. B..
Litter and soil termites were collected with soil cores (21cm diameter) in a primary forest site, a secondary forest site and two sites of a polyculture plantation system in central Amazonia (Brazil), in three-monthly intervals from 1997 to 1999. Termite genus diversity, abundance and biomass all were highest in the primary forest. The values in the secondary forest were half those of the primary forest, and they were lowest in the plantation systems, indicating that the latter sites may suffer from functional constraints concerning the process of organic residue decomposition.
