ABSTRACT Cereus hildmannianus K. Schum is a columnar cactus native to South and Southeast Brazil. The cultivation of this species seems justifiable for several reasons: its fruits are spineless and edible; it is not threatened with extinction; it naturally occurs in Pampa and Atlantic Forest under non-xeric conditions that may be unsuitable for the cultivation of other tropical cacti; and the plants are pollinator-dependent and so should benefit from native pollinators. This study aimed to test seed germination of C. hildmannianus with samples collected at three different localities in southern Brazil, as a necessary step preceding any attempts of management and domestication. Tuna are highly prized in Oriental cuisine, and the bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus) is of great commercial importance. Quality is assessed by the tuna meat quality, freshness, texture and fat, which can be altered by factors inherent to capture, such as days of onboard storage, months of the year, whether the catch was living or dead, fish weight and year. These factors were correlated to identify those that affect quality. We obtained data from nine vessels, from January 2007 to April 2010, creating an information bank of 21,908 bigeye tuna. Abstract Effect of extrusion cooking using different corn starch contents on the physicochemical properties (expansion ratio, bulk density, color, hardness, protein in vitro digestibility, crude protein content, thermal properties and microstructure) of tuna meat-based extrudates was investigated. The results showed that the increased corn starch content led to darker, greener, yellower and lower crude protein content of extrudates, but no significant difference was observed in expansion ratio, bulk density and hardness. The lowest protein in vitro digestibility of 82.83±0.39% appeared when the corn starch content was 20 wt%. However, currently available acoustic receivers require physical recovery of the units to download stored data. Such operation is often difficult in remote study areas like in the open ocean. We present a new satellite-linked acoustic receiver (Vemco VR3-Argos) that allows downloading data through a satellite uplink (Argos). A feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the effect of the supplementation of hydrolysates from tuna head on the survival and growth of Penaeus vannamei. To this end, a feeding trial was performed on eleven groups of shrimps of average weight 4.34 g. A geostatistical method for assessing biomass of tuna aggregations around moored fish aggregating devices with star acoustic surveys ArchiMer

Universal kriging was used to model the spatio-temporal variability in the acoustic density of tuna aggregations recorded during star echosounding surveys around moored fish aggregating devices (FADs) in Martinique (Lesser Antilles). The large-scale deterministic drift in the tuna spatial distribution was modeled using an advection-diffusion equation applied to animal grouping. Residuals from the drift were modeled as a random component with small-scale spatial correlation. Aim The spoilage potential of 28 bacterial strains isolated from spoiled raw yellowfin tuna was evaluated. Methods and Results Bacterial species were inoculated in irradiated tuna matrix. Histamine-producing bacteria were isolated from naturally contaminated seafood, some of responsible for histamine-poisoning. At the same time, lactic acid bacteria were isolated on the same products and clustered according to their inhibitory activity against 4 histamine-producing species. Enzymatic Hydrolysis of Yellowfin Tuna (Thunnus albacares) By-Products Using Protamex Protease ArchiMer

Long-term proteolysis of tuna by-products (head, viscera and tail) by the wide spectrum protease Protamex has been investigated and compared. After hydrolysis, two fractions (soluble aqueous phase and insoluble sludge) were collected. Chemical compositions of each fraction and molecular mass distributions of soluble peptides were determined. Degrees of hydrolysis obtained after 12 h of hydrolysis of head, viscera and tail were 32.3, 16.8 and 22.2 %, respectively. Acoustic characterisation of pelagic fish aggregations around moored fish aggregating devices in Martinique (Lesser Antilles) ArchiMer

Sea cruises were conducted for 57 days over 16 months to characterise pelagic fish aggregations around 2 moored fish aggregating devices (FADs) in Martinique (Lesser Antilles). Echosounder surveys run in a star pattern were used in conjunction with obliquely beamed sonar observations. An echo-integration-by-shoal algorithm was implemented to isolate pelagic fish shoals from sound scattering layers and to compute mean morphometric, positional and density parameters.
