Effects of biological, economic and management factors on tuna and billfish stock status ArchiMer
Pons, Maite; Branch, Trevor A.; Melnychuk, Michael C.; Jensen, Olaf P.; Brodziak, Jon; Fromentin, Jean-marc; Harley, Shelton J.; Haynie, Alan C.; Kell, Laurie T.; Maunder, Mark N.; Parma, Ana M.; Restrepo, Victor R.; Sharma, Rishi; Ahrens, Robert; Hilborn, Ray.
Commercial tunas and billfishes (swordfish, marlins and sailfish) provide considerable catches and income in both developed and developing countries. These stocks vary in status from lightly exploited to rebuilding to severely depleted. Previous studies suggested that this variability could result from differences in life-history characteristics and economic incentives, but differences in exploitation histories and management measures also have a strong effect on current stock status. Although the status (biomass and fishing mortality rate) of major tuna and billfish stocks is well documented, the effect of these diverse factors on current stock status and the effect of management measures in rebuilding stocks have not been analysed at the global level....

Bilan et perspectives de developpement des DCP au Cap-Vert ArchiMer
Rey-valette, H; Martins, P.
A new programme concerning the experimentation of about thirty Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) is to start in the Cape Verde Islands at the end of 1999. In this context, this communication is intended: - to evaluate the halieutic, economic and social conditions of the artisanal fishery in this archipelago, notably in terms of assets and constraints. Although these conditions are very heterogeneous depending on islands, the fads seem to be able to help the stabilization and the development of the fishing activities, disadvantaged by a low productivity, limited operating ranges of boats, and very irregular outings at sea. But the narrowness of the domestic market is likely to cause drops in the fish prices if the production increases, while the absence of...

Do FADs influence the geographical distribution of dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus)? ArchiMer
Taquet, Marc; Reynal, Lionel; Laurans, Martial.
For most fisheries, increasing the local production of pelagic fish is the main objective of Fish Aggregating Devices (fads). This does not rule out the existence of a larger-scale impact, especially on the migratory behaviour of fish. The analysis of data collected during 25 experimental fishing surveys around Martinique between 1995 and 1997 has led to the hypothesis that fads influence the migratory behaviour of young dolphinfish. Unlike recent studies of dolphinfish migration in the Caribbean, which tend to show an annual migration pattern with a seasonal passage through the French West Indies, the experimental fishing surveys done over more than a year on a monthly basis on a single cohort, show that the migratory pattern of part of the regional stock...

Global habitat preferences of commercially valuable tuna ArchiMer
Arrizabalaga, Haritz; Dufour, Florence; Kell, Laurence; Merino, Gorka; Ibaibarriaga, Leire; Chust, Guillem; Irigoien, Xabier; Santiago, Jose Luis; Murua, Hilario; Fraile, Igaratza; Chifflet, Marina; Goikoetxea, Nerea; Sagarminaga, Yolanda; Aumont, Olivier; Bopp, Laurent; Herrera, Miguel; Fromentin, Jean-marc; Bonhomeau, Sylvain.
In spite of its pivotal role in future implementations of the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management, current knowledge about tuna habitat preferences remains fragmented and heterogeneous, because it relies mainly on regional or local studies that have used a variety of approaches making them difficult to combine. Therefore in this study we analyse data from six tuna species in the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans in order to provide a global, comparative perspective of habitat preferences. These data are longline catch per unit effort from 1958 to2007 for albacore, Atlantic bluefin, southern bluefin, bigeye, yellowfin and skipjack tunas. Both quotient analysis and Generalized Additive Models were used to determine habitat preference with respect to...

Banning is not enough: The complexities of oceanic shark management by tuna regional fisheries management organizations ArchiMer
Travassos Tolotti, Mariana; Filmalter, John David; Bach, Pascal; Travassos, Paulo; Seret, Bernard; Dagorn, Laurent.
Recently, declining populations of several pelagic shark species have led to global conservation concerns surrounding this group. As a result, a series of species-specific banning measures have been implemented by Regional Fishery Management Organizations (RFMOs) in charge of tuna fisheries, which include retention bans, finning bans and trading bans. There are both positive and negative aspects to most management measures, but generally, the positive aspects outweigh the negatives, ensuring the measure is beneficial to the resource and its users in the long term. Banning measures are a good first step towards the conservation of pelagic shark species, especially since they improve conservation awareness among fishers, managers and the public. Measures...

An overview of the FADs fishery in the Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Morales-nin, B; Cannizzaro, L; Massuti, E; Potoschi, A; Andaloro, F.
The Mediterranean small-scale fleet is highly adaptive, showing a dynamic fishing intensity and strategy, and exploiting seasonal abundant resources. In this area, the aggregatory behaviour under floats of juvenile fish has been used since ancient times to exploit oceanic migratory species such as dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus), using Fish Aggregating anchored Devices (fads). A total of 2 300 boats are engaged in this fishery from August to December, the main fishing areas being those around Malta, Tunisia, Sicily and Majorca. The fads ( arrow right m2) are made of different cheap floating materials, and are moored in fixed places, ranging from shore waters to areas 60 miles off the coast (1 500 m depth). Each boat deploys an average of 20 to 100 fads....

Contribution des DCP fixes et derivants a l'accroissement de la puissance de peche des navires de peche thoniere ArchiMer
Le Gall, Jy.
Tuna world fisheries yield 3 million tons per year; the increase rate of whole production is constant and sustained since 30 years. This original figure for marine fisheries is due to enlargement of tuna fleets and fishing grounds over all the world ocean, the continuous increase of tuna fishing power by in board equipment and remote sensing equipment for searching and scouting (on board, aircraft, satellite, telecommunication_). During the last 20 years, the log-associated tuna fishing has contributed to the local individual and tuna fleets efficiency and fishing power either for large industrial tuna seiners by radio-equipped buoys on natural (debris) or artificial man-made logs. The same trend is noted for numerous artisanal tuna and large pelagic...

La promotion des DCP a Sao Tome et Principe: une experience pedagogique pour l'adoption durable d'une innovation ArchiMer
Verdilhac De, P; Maggiorani, Jm; Debouvry, P.
A development programme for the promotion of FADs in Sao Tome and Principe has implemented an original interactive approach by granting a predominant place to the initiative of the target group and its participation in decision making. The appropriation process of the innovative fads by the beneficiaries takes place in three stages described herewith. the technical research phase. This consists of formally describing an idea in reply to an expressed or potential need. The envisaged fad type is developed and tested by the project's agents in order to obtain a technically appropriate prototype.- the research and adjustment phase. The fad is given to a small number of people to be used in real-life conditions. Reaction surveys will enable its pertinence to be...

Atlantic bluefin tuna: population dynamics, ecology, fisheries and management ArchiMer
Fromentin, Jean-marc; Powers, Joseph.
Both old and new information on the biology and ecology of Atlantic bluefin tuna have confronted scientists with research challenges: research needs to be connected to current stock-assessment and management issues. We review recent studies on habitat, migrations and population structure, stressing the importance of electronic tagging results in the modification of our perception of bluefin tuna population dynamics and behaviour. Additionally, we question, from both scientific and management perspectives, the usefulness of the classical stock concept and suggest other approaches, such as Clark's contingent and metapopulation theories. Current biological information confirms that a substantial amount of uncertainty still exists in the understanding of...

Guam Fish Aggregating Device programme ArchiMer
Torres, A.
Installation and maintenance of FADs by the Government of Guam began in 1979, initially with funding from the Salstonstall-Kennedy Act through the Pacific Tuna Development Foundation. Current funding for the Guam FAD project is provided through the Dingell-Johnson/Wallop-Breaux Sport Fish Restoration programme, a Federal Aid Project funded by taxes collected on the purchase of fishing equipment and motorboat fuels nationwide. There are now sixteen operational FAD sites in Guam's waters. At a cost of approximately US$10,000 per system, concern for the rising costs of replacing and maintaining FAD systems has prompted the Department of Agriculture's Division of Aquatic and Wildlife Resources (DAWR) to investigate alternative FAD maintenance strategies and...

Investigating the performances of a bayesian biomass dynamic model with informative priors on Atlantic bluefin tuna ArchiMer
Simon, M; Fromentin, Jean-marc; Bonhommeau, Sylvain; Gaertner, Daniel; Etienne, Marie-pierre.
We examined the possibility of eliciting informative priors for the parameters of a biomass production model with emphasis on the intrinsic population growth rate of Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus). We reviewed the literature to propose probability distribution functions for the vital rates and used a matrix population model structured by age (Leslie) to compute the population growth rate. A generalized biomass production model is applied on two CPUE and catch datasets (1976-1996 and 1976-2006) using informative priors. The population growth rate prior has a diffuse distribution and is very sensitive to young of the year mortality rate. Thus, we compared the performances of this prior with a commonly used prior for tunas population growth rate. We...

Peche artisanale sur DCP et peche palangriere a la Reunion: antagonisme ou complementarite? ArchiMer
Tessier, E; Poisson, Francois.
More than ten years after its launching, an evaluation of the results of the FADs programme carried on in Reunion Island has been made. Its implementation and its impact on artisanal fishery in Reunion Island have been analysed. This analysis demonstrates that, following a continuously ascending phase, the production of fish caught on fads has reached a plateau. Parallel to the FAD-associated fishery, the longline fishery has developed since 1991. This type of fishery includes production units whose operating zone is bordering the FAD installation area. Analysing the evolution of the small longliner sector is based on general activity indicators (number of ships, production, fish selling prices). Besides, a synthesis of the interactions between those two...

Fish aggregating devices (FADs): good or bad fishing tools? A question of scale and knowledge FOREWORD: Tahiti International Conference "Tuna Fisheries and FADs", November 2011 ArchiMer
Taquet, Marc.
It is estimated that fish aggregating devices (FADs) are now used for over 40% of world tropical tuna catches, making this technique a major phenomenon for high seas fisheries worldwide, and one that has experienced great expansion over the past three decades. The question of whether the FAD is a good or a bad tool for the exploitation of marine resources depends on many parameters. To respond to this question, it is necessary to distinguish different scales of exploitation (artisanal vs. industrial) and various types of FADs (anchored vs. drifting), but it is also very important to gather more data and conduct further research on this topic to gain a better understanding of the phenomenon and of its impacts. As such, twelve years after the first...

Evaluación de los rendimientos del bonito (Katsuwonus pelamis) con dos métodos de cocción OceanDocs
Guerra, M.; Gonzales, Y.; Vega, L.; Castelo, R.; Trujillo, Z..

Seychelles tuna bulletin : first quarter 1989 OceanDocs
The number of purse seiners active in the Western Indian Ocean remained high during the first quarter of 1989, ranging from 49 in January to 48 in March. This represents a significant increase in the number of vessels over the same period last year when an average of 36 vessels was in operation. Excellent fishing results prevailed throughout the first quarter of this year. Catch rates reached a record high, for that period, of 26 MT/day compared to 18 MT/day for the same period last year. The proportion of yellow fin in the catch dropped from 58% in January to 36% in March, with a corresponding increase in the proportion of skipjack from 40% to 63%. This is unusual for this time of the year, when yellow fin is the predominant species in the catch. The...

Report of the Third Session of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission OceanDocs
The Third Session of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) was held in Mahé, Seychelles, from 9 to 12 December 1998. The Commission approved participation in the Coordinating Working Party on Fishery Statistics (CWP). The Commission took note of the report of the Scientific Committee : in relation to the status of most stocks, this report underlined the inadequacy of present knowledge and the need for further research. The Commission decided unanimously that it would proceed, from now on, on a regular basis, to collect data on catches of non-target, associated and dependent species (NTADs). The Commission also decided that participation in the Working Parties should be open to interested and competent experts. The Commission endorsed the Scientific...

Seychelles tuna bulletin for 1993 OceanDocs
This volume of tuna statistics for the West Indian Ocean (WIO) is the second to be based on the "New tuna" program. It includes the figures for 1992 as well as 1993. Due to the necessity of rapidly publishing 1993 statistics only one volume has been produced for the whole year and not one for each quarter. In future the whole year and not one for each quarter. In future the system of publishing a Tuna Bulletin each quarter will be reverted to. Due to the inclusion of trips which started at the end of 1992 but which finished in early 1993 the 1992 total catch has been revised upwards from 273,852 MT. published in the last Tuna Bulletin to 278,218 MT. The initial estimate for the total WIO purse seine tuna catch for 1993 is 263,918 MT. However, this...
