A Research on Briquetting of Greenhouse Pepper Crop Residues CIGR Journal
BİLGİN, Sefai.
Greenhouse cultivation is widespread in Turkey, and tomato, pepper and eggplant among the vegetables are grown densely in greenhouses. Every year, huge amounts of crop residue are produced from these greenhouses, and the vast majority of these residues are dumped in landfills and out of the greenhouses without evaluating in any way. These crop residues are organic matters and can be evaluated as a biomass energy source. In this study, dried ground greenhouse pepper crop residues were briquetted in the hydraulic press with maximum capacity of 210 MPa and a punch-conical die set, and physical properties of briquettes regarding briquette quality were determined. The briquetting experiments were conducted at 7.06 % moisture content (w.b.), 0.732 mm geometric...

Since 2000, Macrorhabdus ornithogaster "megabacteriosis" has been diagnosed in the avian diseases laboratory in a diversity of avian species and varied spectrum of disease. The disease in some species (chickens, turkeys, guinea fowls) was clinically characterized by emaciation, prostration, loss of appetite, cachexia and death, with a typically chronic course. A more acute disease was observed in finches (canary-Serinus and zebra-Taeniopygia) and budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus). The large rod shaped organism, visible from 100 times magnification, with and without staining, could be detected in sick and also in reasonably normal individuals of some species, such as chickens, turkeys, quails and pigeons. In rheas (Rhea americana), ostriches (Struthio...

Characterization of the relations between morphology and physiological status of the pineal gland in connection with the somatic development level in turkeys reared in Romania Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Lazăr,R.; Solcan,C.; Creţu,C.; Lazăr,M.; Muntean,C.; Boişteanu,P.C..
This research started from the premises of the existence of some possible relationships between indole and pineal peptide hormones and the somatic development, with participation of hypothalamic-pituitary complex. Experimental factors, which were the subject of the present paper, influenced the dynamics of corporal mass and fodder consumption, leading to the occurrence of some important structural modifications at the level of pineal gland. The exposure of the individuals to continuous light (photic pinealectomy) produces increases in corporal mass, showing the involvement of the pineal gland in neuro-endocrine-metabolic reactions, which contributes to the maintenance of homeostatic balance, including somatic ones. Biological material was represented by a...

Relations between rural development projects and urban migration: the Köykent Project in Turkey Ciência Rural
Erdönmez,Cihan; Özden,Sezgin.
In Turkey, migration from rural areas to the cities began in the 1950s. Although various rural development approaches were discussed in the 1960s and 1970s, none of them was successfully put into practice. In 2000, Köykent, one of these rural development approaches was started in the borough of Mesudiye. This study examines the effect of the Köykent Project on the migration from rural areas to cities. The results show that the project affected the migration in two ways. First, the tendency of rural residents to migrate to the cities decreased. Second, the tendency of urban residents, who had previously migrated from villages to cities, to return to their home villages increased.

Perceptions of wheat producers towards risk and risk management strategies: A case study from Turkey Ciência Rural
Hayran,Seyit.
ABSTRACT: In this study, risk perception of wheat producers in Turkey was examined based on a case study conducted in Bitlis Province. The data set used in the study was obtained from 157 farmers randomly. Factor analysis was employed to classify risk sources and management strategies, and then multiple regression was used to investigate the relationship between farmers perceptions and some characteristic. Results of this study have shown that economic-based risks were perceived more strongly by farmers. Farmers’ also used more than one risk management strategy to minimize the impact of the risks they face. So, in order to ensure social and economic sustainability and predictability in wheat production and wheat market, the government should be considered...

Political ecology of inter-basin water transfers in Turkish water governance Ecology and Society
Islar, Mine; Lund University Center for Sustainability Studies (LUCSUS); mine.islar@lucsus.lu.se; Boda, Chad; Lund University Center for Sustainability Studies (LUCSUS); chad.boda@lucsus.lu.se.
We explore the emergence of two contemporary mega water projects in Turkey that are designed to meet the demands of the country’s major urban centers. Moreover, we analyze how policy makers in the water sector frame problems and solutions. We argue that these projects represent a tendency to depoliticize water management and steer away from controversial issues of water allocation by emphasizing large-scale, centralized, technical, and supply-oriented solutions. In doing so, urgent concerns are ignored regarding unsustainable water use, impacts on rural livelihoods, and institutional shortcomings in the water sector. These aspirations build heavily on prevailing discourses of modernity, development, and economic growth, and how urban centers are...

Origin and significance of tourmalinites and tourmaline-bearing rocks of Menderes Massif, western Anatolia, Turkey ArchiMer
Yucel-ozturk, Yesim; Helvaci, Cahit; Palmer, Martin R.; Ersoy, E. Yalcin; Freslon, Nicolas.
In the western central portion of Anatolia lies the Menderes Massif – a large metamorphic crystalline complex made of Neoproterozoic to Precambrian basement rocks overlain by Palaeozoic to early Tertiary metasedimentary rocks, and with a multistage metamorphic evolution developed from the late Neo-Proterozoic to Eocene. We have undertaken a study of the petrology, geochemistry and boron isotope composition of these tourmaline occurrences aiming to constrain the processes responsible for the enrichment of boron and other fluid mobile elements in the Menderes Massif. The dispersed tourmaline has chemical and boron isotope compositions typical of a continental crust setting, but while some of the tourmalinites display similar signatures, others have heavier...

Individual variation in the protein profile of the venom of Mesobuthus gibbosus (Brullé, 1832, Scorpiones: Buthidae) from Turkey J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Ozkan,O; Ciftci,G.
Mesobuthus gibbosus (Brullé, 1832) scorpions were collected from the Mugla province in the Aegean region of Turkey and housed in individual boxes. After extraction, the venom composition was analyzed using gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). Interestingly, all scorpion venom samples contained only one protein band (~68 kDa) in common. Two protein bands (30 and 98 kDa) were common in six venom samples and were absent in the other venoms. Furthermore, two different protein bands (28 and 45 kDa) were detected in seven venom samples. This study proposes possible variations in the composition of individual scorpion venom samples collected from the same geographic region, based on the electrophoretic profile. Additional studies will be necessary in order to assess...
