The type of Rhinoclemmys punctularia (Daudin), from Cayenne, is redescribed. The main variations in the supracephalic pattern of the nominal subspecies are evocated. Rhinoclemmys punctularia lunata (Gray) is not a subspecies geographically restricted to Surinam but a rare individual aberration of R. p. punctularia, which is the Guianan subspecies. Agardh, described from Brazil, is located in the Lund Herbarium, and it is depicted for the first time in a publication. It is taxonomically identical to Dichotomaria obtusata (J. Ellis and Solander) Lamarck and thus can be treated as a later taxonomic synonym. Alysium is regarded as congeneric with Dichotomaria.
