Photosynthetic UV stress tolerance of the Antarctic snow alga Chlorella sp. modified by enhanced temperature? RChHN
Rivas,C.; Navarro,N.; Huovinen,P.; Gómez,I..
BACKGROUND: Photosynthetic characteristics and the effect of UV radiation and elevated temperature measured were studied in Chlorella sp. isolated from a snow microalgal community at King George Island, Maritime Antarctica through the chlorophyll florescence (rapid light curves and maximum quantum yield, respectively). The environmental context was monitored through measurements of spectral depth profiles of solar radiation (down to 40 cm) in the snowpack as well as a through continuous recording of temperature and PAR using dataloggers located at different depths (0-30 cm) within the snow column RESULTS: The photochemistry of Chlorella sp. was affected by UV radiation in a 12-h laboratory exposure under all studied temperatures (5, 10, 15, 20 °C): the...

Use of Doehlert and constrained mixture designs in the development of a photo-oxidation procedure using UV radiation/H2O2 for decomposition of landfill leachate samples and determination of metals by flame atomic absorption spectrometry Anais da ABC (AABC)
Bezerra,Marcos A.; Souza,Antônio D.S.; Oliveira,Rafael V.; Oliveira,Djalma M.; Cardoso,Luiz A.M.; Sousa Filho,Hélio R..
This work proposes the use of photo-oxidation degradation with UV radiation/H2O2 as sample treatment for the determination of Fe, Zn, Mn, Ni and Co in municipal solid waste landfill leachate by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). Three variables (pH, irradiation time and buffer concentration) were optimized using Doehlert design and the proportions of mixture components submitted to UV radiation (leachate sample, buffer solution and H2O2 30%, v/v) were optimized using a constrained mixture design. Using the experimental conditions established, this procedure allows limits of detection of 0.075, 0.025, 0.010, 0.075 and 0.041 µg mL-1, and the precision levels expressed as relative standard (%RSD, 0.5 µg mL-1) were 3.6, 1.8, 1.3, 3.3 and 1.7%, for...

The design of an in vitro fertilization (IVF) laboratory and its importance in risk prevention: applicability of UV radiation BABT
Izquierdo,Enrique Gea; Velasco,Carlos Ángel Benavides; Escudero,José Vicente Maeso; Rodríguez,Antonio García.
This study addressed the environmental control of an IVF laboratory and the potential repercussions that the presence of certain physical, chemical and biological agents could have on workers' health or on the tasks they carried out. The design of the laboratory and its facilities contributed to an improvement in work quality and minimised the environmental-related risks. The preventive measures adopted had an influence on the carried out actions.

Intercellular contact-dependent survival of human A549, NCI-H596 and NCI-H520 non-small cell lung carcinoma cell lines BJMBR
Castro,M.A.A.; Schwartsmann,G.; Moreira,J.C.F..
In the present study, we examined the relationship between cell phenotype and cell survival of three human non-small cell lung carcinoma cell lines (A549, NCI-H596 and NCI-H520). Cells in exponential growth at various densities were incubated for 24 h at 37ºC in a 5% CO2 humidified atmosphere and then exposed to UV radiation for 1 min (256 nm, 40 W, source-to-target distance 100 cm). After two days the surviving cells were quantified by sulforhodamine ß staining and DNA fragmentation assay. The differences in UV sensitivity at 60 x 10³ cells/cm² among the cell lines were not related to the proliferative state of the cells but to the extent of intercellular contact. In contrast to A549 and NCI-H596, irradiated NCI-H520 cells presented lower DNA...

Photochemistry and photobiology of actinic erythema: defensive and reparative cutaneous mechanisms BJMBR
Sunlight is part of our everyday life and most people accept it as beneficial to our health. With the advance of our knowledge in cutaneous photochemistry, photobiology and photomedicine over the past four decades, the terrestrial solar radiation has become a concern of dermatologists and is considered to be a major damaging environmental factor for our skin. Most photobiological effects (e.g., sunburn, suntanning, local and systemic immunosuppression, photoaging or dermatoheliosis, skin cancer and precancer, etc.) are attributed to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) and more particularly to UVB radiation (290-320 nm). UVA radiation (320-400 nm) also plays an important role in the induction of erythema by the photosensitized generation of reactive oxygen species...

Photosensitivity of Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) Seedlings Exposed to Ultraviolet-B Radiation Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Tapia F,María Luisa; Toro A,Guillermo  ; Parra R,Bélgica  ; Riquelme E,Alejandro.
The intensity of ultraviolet-B radiation (UV-B) has increased on the Earth´s surface due to the stratospheric ozone depletion, causing an adverse effect on a wide range of species, such as morphological, physiological, and biochemical alterations. This research studied the intraspecific photosensitivity of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) seedlings exposed to UV-B. Six commercial cultivars were evaluated: Laura, Sprint 440, Dasher II, Exocet, Poinsett 76, and Marketmore 76 under greenhouse-controlled environmental conditions with a hydroponic sandwich-type system with a Hoagland II nutrient solution. Seedlings were irradiated from expanded cotyledons to the third true leaf with three intensities of UV-B radiation (30, 40, and 50 μW cm-2) for 18 d...

Germicidal effect of UV light on epiphytic fungi isolated fromblueberry Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Latorre,Bernardo A; Rojas,Susana; Díaz,Gonzalo A; Chuaqui,Hernán.
The present study examined the inactivation effect of ultraviolet (UV) light on the conidia of Botrytis cinerea Cladosporium cladosporioides, C. herbarum and Pestalotiopsis clavispora, common pathogens of blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum), often found as epiphytes. The fungi were grown at 20°C in acidified potato dextrose agar (APDA) in the dark; conidial suspensions (10(6) conidia mL-1) were placed the bottom of 5 cm glass Petri plates with a maximum height of 0.5 mm. Uncovered plates were immediately exposed to either UVA (λ = 361 nm), UVB (λ = 302 nm) or UVC (λ = 254 nm) at doses between 40 and 110 mJcm². The results were expressed as survival ratios Nt/N0 (the number of colonies obtained after conidia were exposed to UV...
