Uneven Access and Underuse of Ecological Amenities in Urban Parks of the Río Piedras Watershed Ecology and Society
Garcia-Montiel, Diana C.; Institute for Tropical Ecosystem Studies, University of Puerto Rico ; dgarcia@ites.upr.edu.
The association between consumption of ecological amenities in a park setting and improved physical and mental health substantiates the need for improved accessibility to green areas in lower-income neighborhoods. We measured green area accessibility, considering income variation, and park use in a densely populated tropical urban watershed. Park use was explored with 442 in-person interviews, and U.S. Census and Puerto Rico Commonwealth data were used to measure accessibility. Nearly 20% of residents earning ≤ $15,000 lived within park service areas with the highest crime incidence in the region, whereas 90% of those earning > $75,000 lived within park service areas with lower crime rates. Innovative nonexclusionary activities such as...

Biodiversity of Collembola in urban soils and their use as bioindicators for pollution PAB
Fiera,Cristina.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of pollutants on the abundance and diversity of Collembola in urban soils. The research was carried out in three parks (Cişmigiu, Izvor and Unirea) in downtown Bucharest, where the intense car traffic accounts for 70% of the local air pollution. One site in particular (Cişmigiu park) was highly contaminated with Pb, Cd, Zn and Cu at about ten times the background levels of Pb. Collembola were sampled in 2006 (July, September, November) using the transect method: 2,475 individuals from 34 species of Collembola were collected from 210 samples of soil and litter. Numerical densities differed significantly between the studied sites. The influence of air pollutants on the springtail fauna was visible at the...

Distributional Welfare Impacts of Public Spending: The Case of Urban versus National Parks AgEcon
Feinerman, Eli; Fleischer, Aliza; Simhon, Avi.
This study examines the optimal allocation of funds between national and urban parks. Since travel costs to national parks are significantly higher than to urban parks, poor households tend to visit the latter more frequently, whereas rich households favor the former. Therefore, allocating public funds to improving the quality of national parks at the expense of urban parks disproportionately benefits high income households. By developing a theoretical model and implementing it using Israeli data, findings indicate all households, except for the richest decile, prefer that the park authority divert a larger proportion of its budget from national to urban parks.

NEIGHBORHOOD PARKS AND RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY VALUES IN GREENVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA AgEcon
Espey, Molly; Owusu-Edusei, Kwame.
The effect on housing prices of proximity to different types of parks is estimated using a unique data set of single-family homes sold between 1990 and 1999 in Greenville, South Carolina. While the value of park proximity is found to vary with respect to park size and amenities, the estimates from this study are larger than previous studies. The greatest impact on housing values was found with proximity to small neighborhood parks, with the positive impact of proximity to both small and medium-size parks extending to homes as far as 1500 feet from the park.

Composition and diversity of mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) in urban parks in the South region of the city of São Paulo, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Carvalho,Gabriela Cristina de; Ceretti-Junior,Walter; Barrio-Nuevo,Karolina Morales; Wilk-da-Silva,Ramon; Christe,Rafael Oliveira; Paula,Marcia Bicudo de; Vendrami,Daniel Pagotto; Multini,Laura Cristina; Evangelista,Eduardo; Camargo,Amanda Alves; Souza,Laura Freitas; Wilke,André Barretto Bruno; Medeiros-Sousa,Antonio Ralph; Marrelli,Mauro Toledo.
Abstract Many parks in the city of São Paulo contain remnants of Atlantic Forest. Of the 30 municipal parks in the South of the city, we investigated two in this study (Santo Dias Park and Shangrilá Park) in order to survey their mosquito fauna and investigate the presence of potential bioindicators of environmental conditions and vectors of human pathogens. Mosquitoes were collected monthly between March 2011 and February 2012 using aspirators, Shannon and CDC traps for adult mosquitoes and larval dippers and suction samplers for immature forms. Sampling effort was evaluated by plotting a species accumulation curve, and total richness was estimated using the first-order jackknife. To compare the diversity between the two parks Shannon and Simpson...
