Temperature, urbanization and body color polymorphism in South Brazilian populations of Drosophila kikkawai (Diptera, Drosophilidae) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Costa,Bartira E. Pinheiro da; Rohde,Cláudia; Valente,Vera Lúcia da Silva.
Body color polymorphism of urban populations of cosmopolite fly Drosophila kikkawai Burla, 1954 was investigated in relation to its possible association with environmental temperature. Samples of D. kikkawai were collected in spring, summer, autumn and winter between 1987 to 1988, in zones with different levels of urbanization in the southern Brazilian city of Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul. A clear association was observed between darker flies and both seasons with low temperatures and areas of low urbanization (where temperature is generally lower than in urbanized areas). Results of preliminary laboratory experiments involving six generations of flies grown in chambers at temperatures of 17º and 25ºC confirmed this tendency to a relationship between...

Isoenzymatic polymorphisms in urban populations of Drosophila willistoni RChHN
SAAVEDRA,CARMEN C. R.; NAPP,MARLY; REGULY,MARIA LUIZA; VALENTE,VERA LUCIA S.
Natural populations of Drosophila willistoni collected both in urban sites and in the wild, as control, were analysed with respect to their isoenzyme polymorphisms in six loci of enzyme systems, through horizontal electrophoresis. The first pool of populations was collected and analysed during the years 1987 and 1988, and the other during 1992 and 1993, in comparable seasons. The level of enzymatic polymorphism first detected was smaller in comparison to that observed four years later, suggesting an increase of variability along the time elapsed since the first sampling of this species, in the city of Porto Alegre. Our findings are suggestive of an increasing adjustment of the species to this new environment
