Evaluación del estado sucesional de un bosque subtropical de quebradas en el norte de Uruguay Acta Botanica
Grela,Iván A..

Molluscan assemblages from the marine Holocene of Uruguay: composition, geochronology, and paleoenvironmental signals Ameghiniana
Martínez,Sergio; Rojas,Alejandra; Ubilla,Martín; Verde,Mariano; Perea,Daniel; Piñeiro,Graciela.
Dates of marine Holocene molluscs from Uruguay (Villa Soriano Formation) range from 6849 to 1858 cal. years BP. There are no significative gaps among the different ages obtained, with the exception of the interval 2276-2830 calculated years BP. Two kinds of concentrations are distinguished: autochthonous, for which a low energy depositional environment is inferred, and parautochthonous, deposited in foreshore and nearshore high-energy environments. Results of different types of multivariate analyses on presence-absence and abundance data show that only three localities are clearly differentiated from the others. The discrimination of two of them (Arazatí, Las Cañas) is explained by the presence of only one or two species, but the third (Punta Rasa) is the...

Chemical signature of two Permian volcanic ash deposits within a bentonite bed from Melo, Uruguay Anais da ABC (AABC)
Calarge,Liane M.; Meunier,Alain; Lanson,Bruno; Formoso,Milton L.L..
A Permian bentonite deposit at Melo, Uruguay is composed of a calcite-cemented sandstone containing clay pseudomorphs of glass shards (0-0.50 m) overlying a pink massive clay deposit (0.50-2.10m). The massive bed is composed of two layers containing quartz and smectite or pure smectite respectively. The smectite is remarkably homogeneous throughout the profile: it is a complex mixed layer composed of three layer types whose expandability with ethylene glycol (2EG 1EG or 0EG sheets in the interlayer zone which correspond to low-, medium- and high-charge layers respectively) varies with the cation saturating the interlayer zone. The smectite homogeneity through the profile is the signature of an early alteration process in a lagoonal water which was over...

Golden mussel Limnoperna fortunei (Bivalvia: Mytilidae) distribution in the main hydrographical basins of Uruguay: update and predictions Anais da ABC (AABC)
Brugnoli,Ernesto; Clemente,Juan; Boccardi,Lucía; Borthagaray,Ana; Scarabino,Fabrizio.
Limnoperna fortunei, an Asiatic rivers bivalve has become a worldwide problematic invasive species causing several water quality and macrofouling problems. In the Neotropical region it was first recorded in 1991 in the Río de la Plata coast, Buenos Aires province. Since this, it showed a quick upstream invasion into the principals aquatic systems of the Plata Basin. Nevertheless, there is not a study about its invasion and distribution process in aquatic systems of Uruguay. We describe the new records of Limnoperna fortunei in Uruguayan coast of Río de la Plata, Santa Lucía, Negro and Uruguay Rivers. With these results we aim to estimate its distributional limits for Uruguay main hydrographical basins. We also deal with the role of salinity as the main...

Morphometrical aspects of adults of Gratiana spadicea (Klug) Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae) from Southern Uruguay BJB
PONCE DE LEÓN,R.; FAILLA,G.; MORELLI,E..
Morphometrical data of pronotum, elytra, and total length of adult males and females of a Gratiana spadicea population from southern Uruguay are given. Descriptions and illustrations of aedeagus and spermatheca are provided for the first time. Females were significatively larger than males in total length. The coefficient of variation of the aedeagus measures ranged from 3.7% to 7.7%, and those of the spermatheca from 4.1% to 11.2%. The best value for the coefficient of determination was obtained for the reciprocal regression (1/Y = a + bX) of the total length of the aedeagus versus the length from the apex to the basal region of the median lobe.

Acute Contact Toxicity Test of Oxalic Acid on Honeybees in the Southwestern Zone of Uruguay Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Carrasco-Letelier,Leonidas; Mendoza,Yamandu; Ramallo,Gustavo.
This work studies the acute contact toxicity of oxalic acid (OA) on a honeybee polyhybrid subspecies (Apis mellifera), which is the dominant biotype in southwestern zone of Uruguay (SWZU) and the country's most important honey-producing region. We determined the mean lethal dose (LD50), as well as the no observed effect level (NOEL) and the lowest observed effect level (LOEL) values. We also estimated the total number of honeybees per hive in the test area. The aim was to assess the relationship between the maximum OA dose used in Uruguay (3.1 g OA per hive) and the toxicological parameters of honeybees from SWZU. The current dose of 3.1 g OA per hive corresponds to 132.8 OA per honeybee since determined NOEL is 400 OA per honeybee; our results indicate...

Antifungal activity of medicinal plant extracts against phytopathogenic fungus Alternaria spp Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Díaz Dellavalle,Paola; Cabrera,Andrea; Alem,Diego; Larrañaga,Patricia; Ferreira,Fernando; Dalla Rizza,Marco.
The aim of the study was to evaluate the antifungal activity of extracts of 10 plant species used in traditional Uruguayan medicine against the phytopathogenic fungus Alternaria spp. The plants were selected on the basis of their reported ethnobotanical uses. Aqueous, saline buffer and acid extracts of different plant species were screened in vitro for their antifungal activity against Alternaria spp. For the antifungal evaluation we used a microspectrophotometric assay. Minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) of the extracts were determined. Three solvents were assayed on different tissues of the plants and among the 29 evaluated extracts, 31% of the extracts inhibited growth, similar to the effects of a chemical...

Technological Change and Technical Efficiency for Diary Farms in Three Countries of South America Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Bravo-Ureta,Boris E; Moreira,Víctor H; Arzubi,Amilcar A; Schilder,Ernesto D; Álvarez,Jorge; Molina,Carlos.
The progressive liberalization of agricultural markets, along with the threat that imported products can pose to local producers, reveals the importance of productivity growth as a mechanism to improve competitiveness. Technical efficiency measurement is the most studied component of productivity because it can help to generate valuable information for policy formulation and farm level decisions focused on the improvement of farm performance. This study uses unbalanced panel data sets for dairy farms from Argentina, Chile and Uruguay, to estimate stochastic production frontier models. These frontiers are then used to estimate economies of size, technological change and technical efficiency. All estimations are based on the Battese and Coelli (1992) model,...

Combining Multivariate Analysis and Pollen Count to Classify Honey Samples Accordingly to Different Botanical Origins Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Corbella,Eduardo; Cozzolino,Daniel.
This study reports the combination of multivariate techniques and pollen count analysis to classify honey samples accordingly to botanical sources, in samples from Uruguay. Honey samples from different botanical origins, namely Eucalyptus spp. (n = 10), Lotus spp. (n = 12), Salix spp. (n = 5), “mil flores” (Myrtaceae spp.) (n = 12) and coronilla (Scutia buxifolia Reissek) (n = 10) were analysed using Melissopalynology (pollen identification). Principal component analysis (PCA) and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) were used to classify the honey samples accordingly to their botanical origin based on a pollen count. Honey samples of higher percentage (> 70%) of Eucalyptus, Lotus and Scutia pollen were 100% correctly classified, whilst samples from...
