| The objective of this work was to quantify the area of compensatory forestation (AFC) for the retention of water in the soil in the Itaim Stream watershed, in Taubaté, SP. The estimations were based on the Compensatory Forestation for Water Retention in Small Watersheds (FCRAM) methodology that takes into consideration the following parameters: 1) the international percentage of water that has to infiltrate into the soil equal to 20.55%; 2) land cover and use classes; 3) soil permeability; and 4) mean annual precipitation. Ribeirão Itaim's watershed has an area of 5,770 ha.
