Structural Change in Russian Transition AgEcon
Gregory, Paul R.; Lazarev, Valery.
This paper examines structural change in the Russian economy in 1990-2001, as measured by the changing composition of output and consumption, using international panel data sets as a frame of reference. It calculates a series of indexes to determine the extent to which the Russian economy is converging towards market economies. Although the Russian structure of output is becoming increasingly similar to that of upper-middle and the lower tier of high-income countries, the structure of Russian manufacturing is inconsistent with its income level and the extent of labor reallocation remains inadequate. Russia’s pattern of consumption remains distorted due to the incomplete price liberalization.

THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC CONSEQUENCES OF THE IMPACT OF CLIMATE CHANGE ON WATER RESOURCES IN SOUTH AFRICA AgEcon
Juana, James S.; Strzepek, Kenneth M.; Kirsten, Johann F..
Most of the climate change models for South Africa predict a reduction in freshwater availability by 2050, which implies that water availability for sectoral production activities is expected to decline. This decline has an impact on sectoral output, value added and households’ welfare. Using a computable general equilibrium approach, this study investigates the possible impact of global change on households’ welfare. The simulation results show that water scarcity due to global change can potentially lead to a general deterioration in households’ welfare. The poor households, whose incomes are adversely impacted, are the most vulnerable to the consequences of the impact of global change on water resources in South Africa. This vulnerability can only be...

Value of Minimum Sire Accuracy Traits in Bred Heifer Price AgEcon
Rees, Lisa; Parcell, Joseph L.; Patterson, David J..
The product life cycle of the new value added marketing strategy that a quality heifer program created in adding, a new product (heifers with additional value characteristics) is explored. The new product that will be examined is related to the Show-Me Select Heifer Replacement program. The Tier II program has essentially created a new product (higher quality bred heifers) by using minimum EPD accuracies for calving ease along with expected calf and carcass performance measurements. The hedonic study shows that that the Tier II heifers receive a premium compared to traditional Show-Me-Select heifers. The first year Tier II heifers came on the market in 2008 they received a discount of $24 as compared to regular Show-Me-Select Heifers. However, the...
