MOLECULAR VARIABILITY OF THREE GENES OF POTATO VEIN YELLOW VIRUS INFECTING Solanum tuberosum, USING SINGLE STRAND CONFORMATIONAL POLYMORPHISM Acta biol.Colomb.
CUBILLOS-ABELLO,Karen Andrea; GUZMÁN BARNEY,María Mónica.
Potato yellow vein virus (PYVV), a virus with tripartite RNA (ss+) genome is classified as member of the genus Crinivirus within the family Closteoviridae. PYVV is the causal agent of potato yellow vein disease (PYVD) with yield loss between 25 %-50 % in field. Single strand conformational polymorphism (SSCP) has been reported to estimate variability in different viruses' species. In this study, the molecular variability of PYVV analyzed by SSCP patterns of three genes: major capsid protein (CP), minor capsid protein (CPm), and heat shock protein (Hsp70) obtained from 60 virus isolates from potato plants expressing PYVD. Leaves collected in Nariño, Colombia from 30 Solanum tuberosum Phureja Group (PhG) and 30 from the Andigena Group (AG). Genes amplified...

Fruit biometry and seed germination of Syagrus romanzoffiana (Cham.) Glassm Acta Botanica
Goudel,Flora; Shibata,Marília; Coelho,Cileide Maria Medeiros; Miller,Paul Richard Momsen.
Syagrus romanzoffiana (Cham.) Glassm. is a species native to Brazil that is of ecological and aesthetic importance. This study aims to describe the biometric characteristics of S. romanzoffiana fruits and to assess the effects that treatments meant to overcome dormancy and partial drying have on seed germination. For biometric characterization, each repetition consisted of 50 fruits from eight clusters (total, 400 fruits). To evaluate methods for overcoming dormancy, seeds representative of populations were treated by perforation of the operculum; perforation of the operculum and immersion in water for 24 hours; cracking; exposure to fire for three minutes; and non-removal of fibers. There was also a control group. In a second experiment, seeds were...

Population structure and impact of recurrent selection on popcorn using EST-SSR markers Agronomy
Guimarães, Amanda Gonçalves; Amaral Júnior, Antônio Teixeira do; Almeida Filho, Janeo Eustáquio de; Pena, Guilherme Ferreira; Vittorazzi, Cássio; Pereira, Messias Gonzaga.
The success of any recurrent selection program depends on the genetic variability of the evaluated population, which is used to refer to the diversity of existing alleles at many genetic loci. Thus, the goal of the present study was to investigate the impact of recurrent selection across nine cycles of a UENF-14 popcorn population through the analysis of genetic diversity and structure using microsatellite markers (EST-SSRs). Genomic DNA was extracted from young leaves of 25 individuals from each cycle (C0, C1 C2, C3, C4, C5, C6, C7, and C8), totaling 225 samples from the UENF-14 population. Fifty EST-SSR markers were used for the analysis of genetic diversity across the recurrent selection cycles, 16 of which were polymorphic. Thirty-four alleles were...

Identification of variability for agronomically important traits in rice mutant families Bragantia
Luz,Viviane Kopp da; Silveira,Solange Ferreira da Silveira; Fonseca,Gabriela Magalhães da; Groli,Eder Licieri; Figueiredo,Ricardo Garcia; Baretta,Diego; Kopp,Mauricio Marini; Magalhães Junior,Ariano Martins de; Maia,Luciano Carlos da; Oliveira,Antonio Costa de.
ABSTRACT The increase of yield potential in new rice (Oryza sativa L.) varieties has been a major challenge for genetic improvement. The generation of mutants, followed by their characterization, constitutes a great possibility to isolate and select genes and genotypes that present agronomic traits of interest. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of chemical mutagen ethyl methane sulphonate (EMS) on agronomic traits in 340 M3 families of rice derived from BRS Querência cultivar. Seeds from each family and the original genotype BRS Querência were sown in the experimental field, and the characters main panicle length, main panicle weight, main panicle grain weight, flag leaf width and plant height were evaluated. Data were subjected to analysis of...

Early selection of elite plants in Asparagus Bragantia
COINTRY,ENRIQUE LUIS; LÓPEZ ANIDO,FERNANDO SEBASTIÁN; GATTI,ILEANA; CRAVERO,VANINA PAMELA; FIRPO,INÉS TERESA; GARCÍA,STELLA MARIS.
In order to establish an efficient selection criterion the variability in three asparagus populations was evaluated defining the most important yield components and analysing its evolution along three growing seasons. The yield components, coefficient of variation (CV) and the proportion of plants contributing to 80% of the total yield were estimated. The elite plants were selected by mean of total yield and clusters techniques. Multiple regression showed that spear number (SN) and spear weight (SW) were the most important yield components. In every population, total yield (TY) and SN showed the highest values of CV, independently of sex. 69% of the plants contributed to the 80% of the total yield in the first year while in the second and third year the...

Plot size and number of replications to evaluate the grain yield in oat cultivars Bragantia
Lavezo,André; Cargnelutti Filho,Alberto; Bem,Cláudia Marques de; Burin,Cláudia; Kleinpaul,Jéssica Andiara; Pezzini,Rafael Vieira.
ABSTRACT The objectives of this study were to determine the optimum plot size (Xo) and the number of replications to evaluate grain yield and verify the variability of Xo among oat cultivars. Thirtytwo uniformity trials of 3 × 3 m were performed, being 8 from each cultivar (URS Charrua, URS Taura, URS Estampa, and URS Corona). Each uniformity trial was divided in 36 basic experimental units (BEU) of 0.5 × 0.5 m. Grain yield was determined in each BEU. The Xo was determined by the method of maximum curvature of the coefficient of variation model. Mean comparisons among cultivars were performed by the Scott-Knott test via bootstrap. The number of replications was calculated by an iterative process until convergence for experiments in completely randomized...

Variability of Vernier acuity measurements in untrained subjects of different ages BJMBR
Abbud,C.M.M.; Cruz,A.A.V..
The Vernier acuity of 50 normal untrained subjects (20 males and 30 females) was measured by the method of adjustment. Subjects were divided into five age ranges with 10 subjects in each age group: 5-10, 11-20, 21-30, 31-40, and 41-50 years. All subjects had normal visual acuity (20/20) and volunteered to participate in the experiment. Children were selected from a local school and adults recruited from the technical staff of the Department of Ophthalmology of the School of Medicine. Vernier acuity was higher in adults compared to children. Intraindividual variability was high and it was estimated that for most individuals of all age groups a range of 100 to 700 trials was necessary to obtain a mean with a precision of 10%. These results suggest that...

Characterization of trees, fruits and genetic diversity in natural populations of mangaba Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Silva,Ana Veruska Cruz da; Amorim,Julie Anne Espíndola; Vitória,Marina Ferreira da; Ledo,Ana da Silva; Rabbani,Allivia Rouse Carregosa.
ABSTRACT The state of Sergipe is the largest mangaba producer, which is a fruit native to Brazil, and has cultural, social and economic importance in its area of occurrence. It is an endangered species due to human actions, and despite its economic potential, there are still no commercial plantations. The study was carried out in order to characterize trees, fruits and the genetic diversity of natural populations of mangaba in Sergipe, Brazil. Fruits from Abaís Beach/Estância (AB) presented, on average, twice the vitamin C content (414.81 mg of vit. C/100g), when compared with the others. The use of ISSR primers was efficient in estimating the genetic similarity of populations. The primers clustered the populations of mangaba according to their origin,...

Classification of the coefficient of variation to variables in beef cattle experiments Ciência Rural
Vaz,Marcos André Braz; Pacheco,Paulo Santana; Seidel,Enio Júnior; Ansuj,Angela Pellegrin.
ABSTRACT: This research was conducted to propose a classification of the coefficient of variation (CV%) in many categories of variables of production and carcass of beef cattle experiments. The data was collected from theses and dissertations. We used the methods of classification considering mean and standard deviation, and considering median and pseudo-sigma. The two methods showed similar results so both can be used to classify CV%. We propose only three categories to rank CV%: low, medium and high.

Research on collective action and common-pool resources is extensive. However, little work has concentrated on the effect of variability in resource availability and collective action, especially in the context of asymmetric access to resources. Earlier works have demonstrated that environmental variability often leads to a reduction of collective action in the governance of shared resources. Here we assess how environmental variability may impact collective action. We performed a behavioral experiment involving an irrigation dilemma. In this dilemma participants invested first into a public fund that generated water resources for the group, which were subsequently appropriated by one participant at a time from head end to tail end. The amount of resource...

Restoring Riparian Ecosystems: The Challenge of Accommodating Variability and Designing Restoration Trajectories Ecology and Society

Flood disturbance processes play a key role in the functioning of riparian ecosystems and in the maintenance of biodiversity along river corridors. As a result, riparian ecosystems can be described as mobile habitat mosaics characterized by variability and unpredictability. Any river restoration initiative should aim to mimic these attributes. This paper suggests that there needs to be an increased institutional capacity to accept some levels of both variability and unpredictability in the ecological outcomes of river restoration projects. Restoration projects have frequently used some form of historical or contemporary reference system to define objectives and to help in the evaluation process. Using these reference systems can give a false sense of the...
