Impact of Changes in Dietary Preferences on U.S. Retail Demand for Beef: Health Concerns and the Role of Media AgEcon
Miljkovic, Dragan; Mostad, Daniel.
The objective of this study is twofold: first, to determine if, in the long run, health concerns affect the retail demand for beef in the United States via changes in consumer dietary preferences, and second, to establish if media coverage of popular diets (media frenzy) causes the change in retail demand for beef or if it simply reports the facts about the changes in consumer dietary preferences. Data used in the analysis are the quarterly retail demand index for beef and the number of newspaper articles and magazine features on low-fat/low-cholesterol and low-carb diets published in the United States between 1990:I and 2004:IV. Johansen’s (1991, 1995) cointegration method and vector error correction (VEC) model-based Granger causality test were used in...

Relationships among Prices across Alternative Marketing Arrangements for Fed Cattle and Hogs AgEcon
Lee, Yoonsuk; Ward, Clement E.; Brorsen, B. Wade.
Reduced reliance on cash market prices for fed cattle and hogs raise questions about the role of cash prices in price discovery. We use seven years of weekly data from mandatory price reports to determine whether or not cash market prices are cointegrated with other procurement prices and then test for causality among the price series. Cash prices were cointegrated with all but one procurement price series. Cash market prices Granger cause all other procurement prices. Bidirectional causality was found in some but not all cases. Thus, cash market prices remain of central importance in price discovery for fed cattle and hogs.

Price Transmission and Food Scares in the U.S. Beef Sector AgEcon
Livanis, Grigorios T.; Moss, Charles B..
The advent of mad cow disease in Canada in the United States raises numerous concerns regarding consumer reaction to information in the United States. To examine the role of consumer reaction to information we examine the response of price spreads in the U.S. beef market to a Food Safety Index derived from Lexis-Nexis. Specifically, we estimate a vector error correction model to examine the long and short-run effect of news on price spreads. Our results indicate that informational shocks are fairly transient in the retail prices, but persist at the wholesale and farm level.

Implications of the Structural Change in Dairy Products Trade on Milk Price Paid to Producers in Chile Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Engler,Alejandra; Nahuelhual,Laura.
Since 1990 row milk production has exhibited a rapid increase from 890 million liters in 1990 to 1,818 million in 2006. The excess production has allowed for the expansion of the export sector, converting Chile in a net exporter in 2001. A relevant question in this new market scenario is how this structural change can affect milk prices paid to producers in Chile. The consequences of this structural change were explored in this study using a Vector Error Correction (VEC) model and cointegration analysis. The results indicated that the domestic, CIF (Cost, Insurance, Freight) and FOB (Free On Board) prices were cointegrated, implying that changes in the import and export prices are transmitted to the domestic market affecting the milk price paid to...
