Vegetative growth and yield of tomato (Lycopersicum esculentum Mill.) in response to the systemic insecticide phorate Anais da SEB
Guedes,Raul N. C.; Guedes,Nelsa M. P.; Picanço,Marcelo.
The effect of the systemic insecticide phorate on vegetative growth and yield of tomato (Lycopersicum esculentum Mill.) was studied in the greenhouse. Three dosages of phorate (1.5, 7.5, and 13.5 mg a.i./ 1.5 L pot) were applied along with a control (without insecticide application). The plants were harvested at 17, 32, 51, 69, and 90 days after tilling. Regression analysis did not show any significant effect of insecticide dosages in plant and root length. However, an overall negative effect of phorate was observed on leaf area, shoot and root dry weights, and fruit fresh weight. Based on multiple regression models, maximum leaf area was obtained with 6.7 mg a.i./pot and maximum shoot and root dry weights were obtained with no insecticide application and...

Quantitative changes in the biochemical composition of lignocellulosic residues during the vegetative growth of Lentinula edodes BJM
Gaitán-Hernández,Rigoberto; Esqueda,Martín; Gutiérrez,Aldo; Beltrán-García,Miguel.
The chemical changes in barley-straw (BS), wheat-straw (WS) and vineyard-pruning (VP) substrates were determined during colonization of Lentinula edodes mycelia (during primordium development) in solid state fermentation. Primordia appeared 39-50 days after inoculation. VP appeared to promote early sporophore initiation. The concentration of hemicellulose in BS and VP decreased gradually from 25.5% to 15.6% and from 15.8% to 12.3%, respectively. However in WS, hemicellulose decreased from 27.2% to 9.5%. Lignin broke down continuously in BS and WS, with 31.8% and 34.4% degradation, respectively; higher than that of cellulose. During the pinning stage, the C:N ratio decreased in VP and BS, but not in WS. On all substrates the phenols decreased notably...

Growth and Yield Response of Watermelon to in-row Plant Spacings and Mycorrhiza Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Ban,Dean; Goreta Ban,Smiljana; Oplanic,Milan; Horvat,Josipa; Novak,Bruno; Zanic,Katja; Znidarcic,Dragan.
Worldwide, a significant increase in watermelon (Citrullus lanatus [Thunb.] Matsum. & Nakai) growing areas has been registered in the last few years. In-row plant spacing has a significant effect on the growth and yield of watermelon, and can enhance competition for water and nutrients. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of in-row plant spacing (1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5 m) and arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM) fungi Glomus mosseae inoculations on watermelon growth and yield under field conditions during 2003, 2004, and 2005 year. In 2003, the main vine length, number of leaves, and number of lateral branches were increased quadratically as the in-row plant spacing increased from 1.0 to 2.5. With an increase in the in-row plant spacing the...

Cycle pruning programmed on the grain yield of arabica coffee Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Baitelle,Diego Corona; Verdin Filho,Abraão Carlos; Freitas,Sílvio de Jesus; Miranda,Guilherme Bessa; Vieira,Henrique Duarte; Vieira,Kezia Moraes.
ABSTRACT The cycle pruning programmed is a reinvigoration technique widely employed in Conilon coffee. This strategy may also be adopted for Arabica coffee to increase its crop longevity and yield. In this scenario, the present study proposes to examine the influence of the cycle pruning programmed on the vegetative and productive development of Arabica coffee. The experiment was developed in the field as a randomized-block design with four replicates. Treatments were tested in a 4 × 2 factorial arrangement consisting of four stem densities (4000, 8000, 12000 or 16000 stems ha-1) and two management strategies for the removal of plagiotropic branches (annual or biennial removal of branches which had reached 70% or more of their production capacity). For...

Vegetative growth of two mulberry species (Morus multicaulis and M. alba) under greenhouse and field conditions Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Johnston,Myrna; Olivares,Alfredo; Bustos,Yoespi.
Morus alba and Morus multicaulis, common ornamental species in Chile, were studied regarding their growth and dry matter production. In Santiago (Metropolitan Region), plants from vegetative propagation, one part growing under field conditions and the other in a plastic greenhouse were used; both with similar soil, water availability and cutting system (0.20 and 0.40 m). Periodically, four shoots per selected plant were measured for length, number of leaves and dry weight. Previously, a correlation between dry matter and foliar size (length, width, area) of each species was established to estimate the latter. Correlation coefficients obtained had a R² higher than 0.60 whereas the length and width used to estimate foliar area had an R² of 0.96 to M....

Pruning effects on vegetative growth and fruit quality of 'Bing'/'Gisela®5' and 'Bing'/'Gisela®6' sweet cherry trees (Prunus avium) Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Villasante,Macarena; Godoy,Soledad; Zoffoli,Juan Pablo; Ayala,Marlene.
Annual pruning is one of the most efficient ways to regulate crop load and renew fruiting wood in highly productive sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) combinations. Although Chilean growers did not previously prune cherry trees of more vigorous combinations, in recent years, the adoption of more dwarfing rootstocks and self-fertile cultivars has led to the inclusion of annual pruning as a practice in modern orchards. At first, this alteration in orchard management practices was not considered by growers, and thus, many of the initially established cherry orchards were not pruned as intensively as they should have been. As a consequence, many trees showed a reduction in fruit quality after 4 or 5 years of being planted, as they became overcropped and,...

Attributes of irrigated rice and soil solution as affected by salinity levels of the water layer Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Fraga,Thiago Isquierdo; Carmona,Felipe de Campos; Anghinoni,Ibanor; Marcolin,Elio.
In the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, flooded rice fields using Patos Lagoon as the source of water for irrigation are subject to be damaged by salinity, since this source is bound to the sea on its southern end. The sensitivity of rice is variable during plant development, being higher in the seedling and reproductive periods. However, there is not enough information about the behavior of plants under salt stress during the course of its development, especially in the vegetative stage. This study evaluated the effect of different levels of salinity of irrigation water on the salinity of soil solution over time and on some plant attributes, during the vegetative stage of rice. The study was conducted in a greenhouse, where seeds of the variety IRGA...
