The pollen morphology and exine structure of 17 species of Lippia L. were investigated in this work using light and scanning electron microscopy. Among the species studied, 14 showed tricolporate pollen grains, two had tri- and tetracolporate pollen grains and a single species exhibited, only tetracolporate pollen. The amb ranged from triangular to square, and the shape varied from oblate-spheroidal to prolate-spheroidal. Three different types of exine ornamentation were observed: psilate, scabrate and perforate. In addition to morphological data, we found positive association between the chromosome numbers and size of pollen grains, and also between the length and width of the colpi. The results indicate that the characteristics of pollen grains in Lippia... |

Leishamaniasis is a disease that affects more than 2 million people worldwide, whose causative agent is Leishmania spp. The current therapy for leishmaniasis is far from satisfactory. All available drugs, including pentavalent antimony, require parenteral administration and are potentially toxic. Moreover, an increase in clinical resistance to these drugs has been reported. In this scenario, plant essential oils used traditionally in folk medicine are emerging as alternative sources for chemotherapeutic compounds. In this study, in vitro leishmanicidal effects of a thymol- and a carvacrol-rich essential oil from leaves of Lippia sidoides Cham. were investigated. The essential oils were extracted and their constituents were characterized by gas... |

The aromatic and medicinal species Lippia alba is vigorous and rugged native to the South America (Atlantic Rainforest). Because it is an allogamous and self-incompatible species, natural populations have high morphological and chemical variability. This work had as objective to conduct a preliminary screening to identify new promising clones from a novel (recombinant) base population of Lippia alba with regard to its agronomic and phytochemical traits, using the linalool oil or chemotype as model. The two superior linalool clones, obtained by collection, were used as controls. Traits evaluated included: dry mass of leaves (DML), oil yield percentage (EOY%), oil production per plant (OP), and linalool percentage (LN%). Forty linalool chemotype clones were... |

Mexican oregano (Lippia graveolens) is a plant found in Mexico and Central America that is traditionally used as a medicinal herb. In the present study, we investigated the antiviral activity of the essential oil of Mexican oregano and its major component, carvacrol, against different human and animal viruses. The MTT test (3-4,5-dimethythiazol-2yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide) was conducted to determine the selectivity index (SI) of the essential oil, which was equal to 13.1, 7.4, 10.8, 9.7, and 7.2 for acyclovir-resistant herpes simplex virus type 1 (ACVR-HHV-1), acyclovir-sensitive HHV-1, human respiratory syncytial virus (HRSV), bovine herpesvirus type 2 (BoHV-2), and bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV), respectively. The human rotavirus (RV) and... |

ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different types of cuttings and indolebutyric acid (IBA) concentration on the vegetative propagation of Lippia insignis , L. lasiocalycina , and L. thymoides . The experiment was conducted in a 2×5 factorial table, by using 2 types of cuttings (apical and medial) and 5 IBA concentrations (0, 250, 500, 750, and 1000mg·L-1) in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD), with 4 replications and 10 cuttings per plot. For the propagation of L. insignis , apical cuttings are the most suitable, whereas for L. thymoides and L. lasiocalycina species, both apical and medial cuttings may be used. The application of IBA is not necessary for propagation by cutting of the three species of Lippia. |

The acrocerids (small headed-flies) form a small group of flies, which are difficult to find and observe. They are rare in collections. Their larvae are heteromorphic parasitoids of many families of spiders and their imagoes show a great deal of morphological variation. Little is known about the biology and systematics of this group in the Neotropical region, especially the Philopotinae. Most studies are based on species from Europe and North America. The Philopotinae occurs througout the world, and are characterized by the strongly developed postpronota, which form a shield dorsally in front of the scutum. Fifty specimens of Philopota sp. were collected from branches of Stachytarphetta cayenensis (Verbenaceae) in the Ilha da Marambaia (23º 04' S - 43º 53'... |
