Вертикальное распределение и суточные вертикальные миграции остракод Южной Атлантики IBSS Repository
Драпун, И. Е..

Diel vertical migration of predators (planktivorous fish larvae) and prey (zooplankton) in a tropical lagoon Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Mendonça,Marcos Marques; Picapedra,Pablo Henrique dos Santos; Ferronato,Michelli Caroline; Sanches,Paulo Vanderlei.
ABSTRACT Based on the hypothesis that diel vertical migration (DVM) is a mechanism of predator avoidance, the objective of the present study was to test for the occurrence of DVM in planktivorous fish larvae of Hypophthalmus edentatus (Spix, 1829) (Siluriformes, Pimelodidae) and Plagioscion squamosissimus (Heckel, 1840) (Perciformes, Sciaenidae), and zooplankton (rotifers, cladocerans and copepods) in an isolated tropical lagoon in the floodplain of the Upper Paraná River, Brazil (region of Parque Nacional de Ilha Grande). We investigated spatial overlap between predators (planktivorous fish larvae) and prey (zooplankton), and tested which physical and chemical variables of the water are related to the DVM of the studied communities. We performed nocturnal...

Spatial and temporal variability of the pico- and nanophytoplankton and bacterioplankton in a deep Polynesian atoll lagoon ArchiMer
Thomas, Y.; Garen, Pierre; Courties, C.; Charpy, L..
Spatial and temporal scales of variability in phyto- and bacterioplankton abundance were investigated in a deep atoll lagoon (Ahe, French Polynesia), Ahe Lagoon showed a classical phytoplankton composition, but its picophytoplankton (Prochlorococcus, Synechococcus and picoeukaryotes) concentrations are higher than the mean for Polynesian atoll lagoons. Phyto- and bacterioplankton descriptors were highly variable, with mean CVs of >20% in most cases: day night, day-to-day, vertical, lagoonal and seasonal. Phytoplankton biomass, which was estimated by in vivo fluorescence, was higher in the deep layer than in the upper layer. This pattern was detected on a day night scale, showing transitory vertical gradients, and through long-term events that were...

One-dimensional biophysical modelling of fish egg vertical distributions in shelf seas ArchiMer
Petitgas, Pierre; Magri Hoeltzener, Stephanie; Lazure, Pascal.
Modelling the vertical distribution of fish eggs is important when assessing fish stocks with egg production methods and for monitoring the reproductive potential of fish populations. Fish eggs are passive particles and their vertical distribution is determined by a few parameters such as egg density, egg diameter, wind- and tide-induced turbulence, and vertical hydrographic structure. A one-dimensional vertical biophysical, numerical model was developed which was adapted to the hydrography of shelf seas under the influence of tidal currents, wind-induced circulation, and river discharges. The biological part of the model parameterized the ascent velocity of the egg as a function of egg properties (diameter, density) and water properties (density,...

Short-scale temporal variability of physical, biological and biogeochemical processes in the NW Mediterranean Sea: an introduction ArchiMer
Andersen, V.; Goutx, M.; Prieur, L.; Dolan, J. R..
In the framework of the PROOF-PECHE project (http://www.obs-vlfr.fr/proof/vt/op/ec/peche/pec.htm) a multi-disciplinary team performed experiments and collected samples during the DYNAPROC2 cruise aboard the RV Thalassa from September to October in 2004. The cruise provided data on the functioning of the pelagic food web by sampling over a month long period in the NW Mediterranean Sea at a fixed station subject to weak horizontal advection currents during a period of hydrological stability. This paper describes the background of the cruise and provides an overview of the results derived from the campaign which constitute the special section. The major objective of the cruise was to assess the relative importance and variability of the pathways of carbon in...

Seasonal and inter-annual variability of bacterioplankton biomass at station Kerfix, off Kerguelen Islands, Antarctica ArchiMer
Delille, D.
Between January 1992 and March 1995, the research project Kerfix undertook the first regular non-coastal multiyear acquisition of parameters related to the carbon cycle in the Southern Ocean at a time series station located at 50degrees40'S-68degrees25'E, 110 km southwest of the Kerguelen Islands. I present here a general overview of the bacteriological data collected during this survey. Bacterioplankton biomass at Kerfix station was always significantly lower than in the direct vicinity of the Kerguelen Islands. Bacterial abundance decreased from surface to deepest layers (from 10(6) cells ml(-1) in surface layer to 5.0 x 10(4) cells ml(-1) at 1500 m). In contrast, mean cell volume (0.1 mum(3)) and proportion of free-living bacteria (80%) were relatively...

Mid-water zooplankton profiles from the temperate ocean and partially landlocked seas. A re-evaluation of interoceanic differences ArchiMer
Weikert, H; Koppelmann, R.
Differences in the vertical distribution of bathypelagic zooplankton in the open northeast Atlantic and in the partially landlocked Levantine and Red Seas were re-evaluated to provide an interoceanic comparison. The decrease in zooplankton abundance with depth was most pronounced in the Red Sea and least evident in the northeast Atlantic. The Levantine Sea showed intermediate characteristics. The data plotted on a semi-log scale against a linear change in depth revealed a reduced rate of decrease in the zooplankton concentration with depth in the deep bathypelagic zone of the northeast Atlantic and the Levantine Sea. This pattern was also found for vertical profiles of micronekton abundance in the southeast Pacific. In the Red Sea, the decrease was...

The Underwater Vision Profiler 5: An advanced instrument for high spatial resolution studies of particle size spectra and zooplankton ArchiMer
Picheral, Marc; Guidi, Lionel; Stemmann, Lars; Karl, David M.; Iddaoud, Ghizlaine; Gorsky, Gabriel.
The Underwater Vision Profiler (UVP) was developed to quantify the vertical distribution of macroscopic particles and zooplankton > 100 mu m in size. The smaller size limit is fixed by optical resolution, whereas the larger size limit is determined by the volume of water illuminated per image. The new fifth generation instrument (UVP5) is compact (30 kg in air) and operates either as a stand-alone instrument with an independent power supply for use on a mooring or free-drifting array, or as a component of a Conductivity, Temperature, and Depth (CTD)-rosette package. Images are recorded at a frequency up to 6 Hz. If the UVP5 is interfaced with a CTD, these images are acquired and analyzed in real time. Images are recorded every 20 cm at the 1 m s(-1)...

Role des bacteries phototrophes anoxygeniques dans une partie stratifiee d'une lagune tropicale (Lagune Ebrie, Cote d'Ivoire) ArchiMer
Caumette, P.
In the deepest parts of the estuarine region of Ebrie Lagoon (Abidjan Africa, (5 degree N, 4 degree W) stratified conditions have been observed during the rainy season (May to Nov.), owing to salinity differences between oxic and anoxic layers. At the interface, 3-4 m depth, phototrophic bacteria (Chromatium, Chlorobium and Pelodictyon ) developed, forming a brown layer due to their different pigments. Their production has been estimated at 41% of the total photosynthetic production during high stratification (Sep. 1981) and their biomass was used by the copepod population for 40 to 60% of its diet. During the dry season, the water column became homogeneous and oxygen was detected to 6m depth. The brown layer of phototrophic bacteria disappeared, as well...

Vertical distributions of macroplankton and micronekton in the Ligurian and Tyrrhenian Seas (northwestern Mediterranean) ArchiMer
Andersen, V; Francois, F; Sardou, J; Picheral, M; Scotto, M; Nival, Paul.
Vertical distributions and diel migrations at nineteen stations located in the Ligurian and Tyrrhenian Seas (northwestem Mediterranean) are described in detail and compared for the main species of micronekton and macroplankton. Sampling was performed in April 1994 in the 0-700 m water column in most cases, down to 350, 450 or 550 m for the coastal or relatively shallow sites. Most of the twenty species showed similar distributions throughout the sampled area, either non-diel-migrating distributions such as the euphausiid Stylocheiron longicorne and the fish Cyclothone braueri, or clear diel-migrant behaviour (e.g. the siphonophore Chelophyes appendiculata and the euphausiid Euphausia krohni). Four species, the siphonophore Lensia conoidea, the pteropods...

Larval fish assemblages in nearshore waters of southeast Gulf of California: vertical and temporal patterns Neotropical Ichthyology
Amezcua,Felipe; Rodríguez-Preciado,José Alberto; Calderón-Pérez,Antonio; Rendón-Rodríguez,Sergio; Green,Lucinda; Chazarreta,Carlo Javier.
Abstract The influence of salinity and temperature on larval fish assemblages, as well as, temporal and vertical patterns on larval fish assemblages off the inlet of the Presidio River, southeast coast of the Gulf of California were evaluated. Samplings for ichthyoplankton and environmental parameter measurements were carried out at three depths, in five sampling sites, during September and December 1994, and April and June 1995. Anchovies and herrings (Clupeiformes) were the most abundant larval fish accounting for 77% of the total abundance. A significant relationship between salinity and the abundance of larval herrings (Opisthonema medirastre and O. dovii) and between the water temperature and the abundance of the weakfish (Cynoscion reticulatus) was...

The autecology of the edible oyster Crassostrea cucullata Born, 1778: size related vertical distribution at Mkomani, Mombasa OceanDocs
Ruwa, R.K.; Okemwa, E.; Polk, P..
The littoral oyster Crassostrea cucullata occurs between 1.05-3.35 m above chart datum with the highest density occuring between 1.85-2.75m. Its distribution is size-related as demonstrated by computation of correlation coefficients (r) and regression equations. The shell lengths (i.e. maximum linear dimension) decreases in an upshore direction. The analysis show high r-values which are significant at P<0.001. The elevation and density related effects on the shell lengths of the oysters are discussed.
