Beet curly top resistance in USDA-ARS plant introduction lines, 2014. NWISRL

Curly top caused by Beet curly top virus (BCTV) is a widespread disease problem vectored by the beet leafhopper in semiarid sugar beet production areas. Host resistance is the primary defense against this problem, but resistance in commercial cultivars is only low to intermediate. In order to identify novel sources of curly top resistance, twenty-four plant introduction (PI) lines were screened in a disease nursery in 2014. The lines were arranged in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Verticillium wilt in experimental sugar beet cultivars in Cassia County, ID, 2006 NWISRL

Experimental sugar beet cultivars were evaluated in a commercial sprinkler-irrigated sugar beet field near Heyburn, ID where winter wheat was grown in 2005. The field trial relied on natural infection of Verticillium dahliae. The plots were planted on 28 Apr to a density of 142,560 seeds/A, and thinned to 47,520 plants/A on 15-20 Jun. Plots were four rows wide (22-in. row spacing) and 34.5 ft long. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design with eight replications per cultivar. The field was cultivated on 8 and 20 Jun. The crop was managed by the grower according to standard cultural practices. Development of modified medium for the enhancement in antifungal activity of P. steckii (MF1 mangrove fungi) against verticillium wilt pathogenic fungi of rose BABT

The antifungal activity of Penicillium steckii (MF1) against pathogenic fungi of rose causing verticillium wilt was evaluated under differential nutrient condition. A suitable and modified medium was obtained in which test fungus exhibited enhanced antifungal activity and produced larger inhibition zone against the verticillium fungus. The study carried out to modify the medium components at level of nitrogen, carbon source and their concentration on agar plates. Addition of amino acids, metals and plant growth hormones did not show positive effect but glycerol enhanced the antifungal activity very much.
