Pirate fishing is fishing conducted outside the framework of any national or regional fisheries management regime. Technically it is referred to as Illegal, Unregulated and Unreported (IUU) fishing. Poaching within Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs, the national 200-mile zones around coastal states) is a serious pirate fishing problem. The world s major fisheries are concentrated in the waters overlying the continental shelves as these areas support larger populations of fish and because these depths are easier for fishermen to reach. As a result of overfishing, many of these fisheries have collapsed or are in decline. The competition for the remaining fish is intense. This has lead to further unregulated or uncontrolled pirate fishing in international... |

This document contains the report of the Sub-Regional Fisheries Commission (SRFC) Workshop on Vessel Monitoring Systems (VMS) which was held in Saly, Senegal, from 14 to 17 October 2002. The Workshop was arranged by FAO at the request of the Sub-Regional Fisheries Commission, as part of FAO’s cooperative work with States and regional fisheries organizations to implement the International Plan of Action (IPOA) to Prevent, Deter or Eliminate Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing, and to promote the use of VMS as an additional instrument for monitoring, control and surveillance (MCS) of fisheries. The objectives of the Workshop were: a) to sensitize the SRFC Member States on the potential of VMS as a complement to their other MCS activities; and... |

There is still little knowledge about the behavior of the estuarine dolphins and also the way they react to the presence of different types of vessels. The aim of the present study was twofold: to investigate the behavior of estuarine dolphins in four locations in Pernambuco, Brazil, and also their reaction to the presence of common types of nautical crafts. The data of this study resulted from 48 fieldtrips to each of the four localities studied (ports of Recife and Suape, and beaches of Bairro Novo and Piedade), thus totaling 192 days of observations, with approximately 380 hours of actual sampling. Ten types of behavioral activities were counted for Bairro Novo beach and the port areas, but only four for Piedade beach. The greatest flows of boats were... |

In order to compare the development of strata in the early stages of secondary forest succession with vessel parameters of the tree species, a forest inventory was carried out in 4-year (Q1: 48 m2), 11-year (Q2: 400 m2) and 20-year (Q3: 400 m2) forests and vessel parameters were investigated from stem cross sections of 18 species obtained in Q2. Thirty three species (21 families), 77 species (35 families), 39 species (20 families) were found in Ql, Q2, Q3, respectively. The percentage of dead individuals, dead stems and the percentage of individuals with multiple stems increased with time after clear cutting. Also, the total D2H of Q3 was 26.1 times that of Q1, and the development of strata started in Q2 and Q3. The image analysis of vessel size, area and... |
