Determinantes sociais da leishmaniose visceral no norte de Minas Gerais AgEcon
Mendes, Chrystian Soares; Lopes, Luckas Sabioni; Toyoshima, Silvia Harumi.
Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) is a typical tropical zoonosis, transmitted by the female insect of the genus Lutzomyia longipalpis. Brazil is one of the countries that have suffered with this disease, given the great changes in the natural environment of the mosquito, due to the growth of cities and exacerbated deforestation of riparian forest. In the country, the State of Minas Gerais is the third in numbers of cases of LV, where the North Mesorregion shows the great number of incidences. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of LV´s socio-economic indicators in this region. It created and discriminated municipalities´ groups according to the incidence of this zoonosis in the period 1998 to 2008 using the multivariate...

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate Leishmania vectors and investigate the environmental and climatic characteristics related to their transmission. This was a prospective eco-epidemiological study involving the systematic collection of sandflies and a canine serological survey in areas of municipality in Brazil. Blood samples from 1,752 dogs were examined to test for canine visceral leishmaniasis (VL). An entomological evaluation was carried out using 24 light traps in the peridomicile and intradomicile areas of 12 households for 12 months. Climate variables were analyzed using a simple Spearman correlation and a spatial analysis via the fuzzy logic method and K function. The prevalence rate of canine VL was 4.1% and 7.1% in the two areas that...

Visceral Leishmaniasis/HIV co-infection in northeast Brazil: evaluation of outcome BJID
Távora,Lara Gurgel Fernandes; Nogueira,Marina Bizerril; Gomes,Sofia Teixeira.
ABSTRACT Since the beginning of the HIV burden, Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL)/HIV co-infection has been diagnosed not only in areas where VL is endemic (Latin America, India, Asia, Southern Europe), but also in North America, were it is considered an opportunistic disease. Clinical presentation, diagnostic tests sensitivity and treatment response in this population differs from VL alone. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate factors related to an unfavorable outcome in patients with VL/HIV diagnosis in a reference center in northeast Brazil. METHODS: Co-infected patients, diagnosed from 2010 to 2012, were included. Data from medical records were collected until one year after VL treatment completion. RESULTS: Forty-two HIV-infected patients were included in the...
