Salmon Gravlax Biopreservation With Lactic Acid Bacteria: A Polyphasic Approach to Assessing the Impact on Organoleptic Properties, Microbial Ecosystem and Volatilome Composition ArchiMer
Wiernasz, Norman; Leroi, Francoise; Chevalier, Frederique; Cornet, Josiane; Cardinal, Mireille; Rohloff, Jens; Passerini, Delphine; Skırnisdóttir, Sigurlaug; Pilet, Marie-france.
Seafood and fishery products are very perishable commodities with short shelf-lives owing to rapid deterioration of their organoleptic and microbiological quality. Microbial growth and activity are responsible for up to 25% of food losses in the fishery industry. In this context and to meet consumer demand for minimally processed food, developing mild preservation technologies such as biopreservation represents a major challenge. In this work, we studied the use of six lactic acid bacteria (LAB), previously selected for their properties as bioprotective agents, for salmon dill gravlax biopreservation. Naturally contaminated salmon dill gravlax slices, with a commercial shelf-life of 21 days, were purchased from a French industrial company and inoculated by...

Trichogramma pretiosum attraction due to the Elasmopalpus lignosellus damage in maize PAB
Xavier,Luciane Modenez Saldivar; Laumann,Raúl Alberto; Borges,Miguel; Magalhães,Diego Martins; Vilela,Evaldo Ferreira; Blassioli-Moraes,Maria Carolina.
The objective of this work was to evaluate if corn plants damaged by the lesser cornstalk borer (Elasmopalpus lignosellus) larvae release volatile organic compounds capable of attracting the egg parasitoid Trichogramma pretiosum. The treatments consisted of plants subjected to harm caused by E. lignosellus larvae, plants subjected to mechanical damage, and undamaged plants. The parasitoid was more attracted by the volatiles released by the insect damaged plants than to those released by undamaged corn plants, after 24 and 72 hours. The volatiles (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate, β-pinene, β-myrcene, (E)-4,8-dimethylnona-1,3,7-triene, and benzothiazole were released in significantly larger quantities by damaged plants. Volatiles released by corn plants damaged by E....

The Effect of Information on Consumer Preferences of Indoor Plants AgEcon
Solano, Alexis; House, Lisa; Gao, Zhifeng.
This study primarily focuses on the effect of information on consumers’ purchasing behavior. If consumers are provided with information about a specific product they may change their beliefs about that product. This distribution of information may lead the consumer to make the decision either to purchase or not purchase, or the consumer may increase or decrease the amount he or she is willing to pay. Here, the impact of information about indoor plants’ ability to reduce indoor air pollution on participants is analyzed. This research will add to the literature on consumer behavior and will also benefit the floriculture industry within the state of Florida. Florida’s floriculture sales have fluctuated during the last ten years. From 2000 to 2003 the...

Emissão por folhas de Ficus benjamina L. (Moraceae) de compostos orgânicos voláteis oxigenados Rev. Bras. Bot.
SOUZA,SILVIA R.; VASCONCELLOS,PÉROLA C.; MANTOVANI,WALDIR; CARVALHO,LILIAN R.F..

Wilting whole crop black oat with glyphosate for ensiling: effects on nutritive, fermentative, and aerobic stability characteristics R. Bras. Zootec.
Bueno,Antonio Vinicius Iank; Jobim,Clóves Cabreira; Rossi,Robson Marcelo; Gritti,Viviane Carnaval; Leão,Guilherme Fernando Mattos; Tres,Tamara Tais.
ABSTRACT We aimed to evaluate the effects of glyphosate as a chemical desiccant on the nutritional quality, fermentation pattern, and aerobic stability of wilted black oat (Avena strigosa Schreb) silage. Black oat sowing occurred in the first fortnight of May 2013. Desiccant application took place when oat reached milky/dough grain stage (96 days after planting). Glyphosate dosages evaluated were 0, 500, 750, 1000, and 1250 mL ha−1. Three days after desiccation, all treatments were ensiled, and the silos were kept stored for 150 days. A completely randomized design was used, and all statistical procedures were performed by means of Bayesian Inference. Treating herbage prior to ensiling from 500 mL ha−1 glyphosate increased dry matter and organic matter...

Volatile Organic Compounds Produced by Human Skin Cells Biol. Res.
ACEVEDO,CRISTIAN A; SÁNCHEZ,ELIZABETH Y; REYES,JUAN G; YOUNG,MANUEL E.
Skin produces volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released to the environment with emission patterns characteristic of climatic conditions. It could be thought that these compounds are intermediaries in cell metabolism, since many intermediaries of metabolic pathways have a volatile potential. In this work, using gas chromatography, we answered the question of whether VOC profiles of primary cultures of human dermal fibroblasts were affected by the type of culture conditions. VOCs were determined for different types of culture, finding significant differences between skin cells grown in classical monolayer culture -2D- compared with 3D matrix immobilized cultures. This indicates that VOC profiles could provide information on the physiological state of skin...

Biofiltration of volatile organic compounds of Brazilian gasoline BABT
Rizzolo,Joana Antunez; Santos,Vanessa Cristina de Castro; Soares,Marlene; Woiciechowski,Adenise Lorenci; Soccol,Carlos Ricardo.
Gasoline vapors pollute the atmosphere and can be harmful to human and animal health. Tons of particles of this pollutant are expelled to the atmosphere, generating great economic losses to the industries and serious damage to the environment. Biofiltration is an option of simple technology with low costs that can be used for the gasoline vapor treatment. The present study was carried out in two biofilter systems of laboratorial scale. The biofilter system 1 was operated with a total volume of 2.72 L (four columns) and the biofilter 2 with 2.04 L (three columns) of total volume. Both of them were operated in sequence, with airflow of 450 mL entering each one. Results obtained were as follows for the removal efficiency (RE) of different gasoline vapor...
