TOTAL AND ORGANIC PHOSPHORUS IN CHILEAN VOLCANIC SOILS Gayana Botánica
Borie,F.; Rubio,R..
This paper reviews the literature related to total and organic P (Po) levels present in both agricultural and forest soils from southern Chile. Different reports have demonstrated the high contents of total P (Pt) found in agricultural soils (1,000-3,000 mg kg-1) even in unfertilized soils. In most soils Po represents more than 50% of Pt, mainly as inositol penta- and hexaphosphates linked to Fe and/or Al. Lipid-P has been found in very small quantities suggesting very fast cycling. When phosphate fertilizers are applied to these soils, the bulk of P is accumulated as macromolecular-P complexes closely associated with soil organic matter. Close relationships have been found between organic C and Po and between Po and P associated with humic acids (HA-P)....

Decoupling of soil development and plant succession along a 60000 years chronosequence in Llaima Volcano, Chile RChHN
GALLARDO,MARÍA-BELÉN; PÉREZ,CECILIA; NÚÑEZ-ÁVILA,MARIELA; ARMESTO,JUAN J..
Few studies have investigated the long-term evolution of nutrient limitation in ecosystems developed on volcanic soils. To approach the problem, we used "space for time substitution" to compare sites with the same state factors, except for the time elapsed since disturbance. Forests of Conguillio National Park in southern of Chile occur on volcanic soils that developed from lava flows and ash deposits of different ages originated from the activity of Llaima volcano. In this study we evaluate the patterns of change in carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus in soils and leaves, as well as changes in tree diversity and basal area along a chronosequence of volcanic substrates from 50 to 60,000 years AP (eight sites). We assessed the evolution of N and P limitation in...

USE OF SLUDGE FROM KRAFT MILL WASTEWATER TREATMENT AS IMPROVER OF VOLCANIC SOILS: EFFECT ON SOIL BIOLOGICAL PARAMETERS R.C. Suelo Nutr. Veg.
Gallardo,F; Bravo,C; Briceño,G; Diez,M.C.
Sludge from kraft mill wastewater treatment was applied on two soils derived from volcanic ashes and, the effect on biological parameters of the soils was evaluated. The soils used in this study were an Andisol belonging of Gorbea Series and an Ultisol belonging of Collipulli Series. The sludge was added at rates of 0, 10, 20, 30 and 50 t ha-1. Previously, germination of red clover (Trifolium pratense), white clover (Trifolium repens), alfalfa (Medicago sativa) and ryegrass (Lolium perenne) was tested to assess phytotoxicity of the sludge. The different soil-sludge mixtures were incubated at controlled temperature for 60 days and microbial respiration, microbial biomass carbon, fluorescein diacetate hydrolysis and acid phosphatase activity were evaluated...

Phosphorus absorption and use efficiency by Lotus spp. under water stress conditions in two soils: A pot experiment Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Castillo,Carolina; Acuña,Hernán; Zagal,Erick; Inostroza,Luis.
The response to P and water deficiencies of forage Lotus species has not been sufficiently studied in the Andisol and Vertisol soil orders in Chile's marginal areas. A pot experiment under cover was carried out between October 2007 and March 2008 to study the effects of P and soil water availability (SWA) on DM production, P absorption, and P use efficiency in Lotus spp. The experiment included three Lotus (L. corniculatus L., L. tenuis Waldst. & Kit. ex Willd., and L. uliginosus Schkuhr) species, two soils (Andisol and Vertisol), two contrasting P levels (low and high), and two SWA levels (10% and 100%). A completely randomized design with a 3 x 2 x 2 x 2 factorial arrangement with four replicates was used. Accumulated shoot and root DM, P...
