Novelties in Brazilian Waltheria L. (Byttnerioideae, Malvaceae): two new species and one re-establishment Acta Botanica
Coutinho,Thales Silva; Colli-Silva,Matheus; Alves,Marccus.
ABSTRACT This work validates two Waltheria species endemic to campo rupestre with complete descriptions, illustrations, updated geographical distributions and comments on taxonomic affinities. Waltheria biribiriensis and Waltheria terminans are restricted to the Southern Espinhaço Province in eastern South America, occurring on mountain tops where campo rupestre vegetation prevails. Furthermore, Waltheria brachypetala, a species of dry deciduous forests in Brazil that was long considered as conspecific with W. ferruginea due to its shrubby lifeform and similar indumentum, is re-established based on differences of phyllotaxy, blade shape and inflorescence type. The first occurrence records of W. brachypetala in the state of Paraíba are also provided, as...

Halophila baillonis Ascherson: first population dynamics data for the Southern Hemisphere Anais da ABC (AABC)
Magalhães,Karine M.; Borges,João C.G.; Pitanga,Maria E..
The present paper presents the first population data for the Southern Hemisphere of the rare seagrass Halophila baillonis. The population studied is located in a calm, reef-protected area at depths ≤ 5 m, covering 12,000 m2 (400 m long by 30 m wide, oriented parallel to the coastline). The population generally demonstrated low shoot density and biomass during the rainy season, with significant differences between seasons, being found only for aboveground biomass. Despite the identification of this new population, the species continues to be considered rare along the Brazilian coast.

The bats of Rio Grande do Norte state, northeastern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Vargas-Mena,Juan Carlos; Alves-Pereira,Kleytone; Barros,Marília Abero Sá; Barbier,Eder; Cordero-Schmidt,Eugenia; Lima,Sergio Maia Queiroz; Rodríguez-Herrera,Bernal; Venticinque,Eduardo Martins.
Abstract Rio Grande do Norte is one of the smallest states in Brazil but has a rich diversity of ecosystems, including Caatinga vegetation, remnants of Atlantic Forest, coastal habitats, mangroves and large karstic areas with caves. However, its chiropteran fauna is little known, and the state contains conspicuous gaps of information on the occurrence and distribution of bats in Brazil. In order to reduce this information gap, based on a review of scientific literature and regional mammal collections, we list 42 species of bats, including new occurrences for 13 species and discussion on their conservation status. Results show that more than half (54%) of the recorded species are phyllostomid bats, and about one third of the bats in the state roosts in...

OPHIOTHRIX SYNOECINA (ECHINODERMATA: OPHIUROIDEA:OPHIOTRICHIDAE): ESPECIE ENDÉMICA Y VULNERABLE DEL CARIBE COLOMBIANO Boletín de Investigaciones
Monroy-López,Mario; Solano,Oscar D..
The presence of Ophiothrix synoecina Schoppe in the Guajira area (Cabo de la Vela), and the contribution of new information about its distribution and density, allowed the reevaluation of the category proposed on the Marine Invertebrates Red List, because of its small and fragmentary area of nine localities through the Colombian Caribbean rocky-shore.

Roadkill and new records for giant armadillo (Priodontes maximus) in central-western Brazil Mastozool. neotrop.
Hannibal,Wellington; da Cunha,Nicolay L; Dalponti,Guilherme; Oliveira,Seixas R; Pereira,Katia R. F.
Despite the widespread distribution of the giant armadillo Priodontes maximus, this species is found at low densities, often in disrupted populations. Here we report 12 new records, including five incidents of roadkill of P. maximus in different points of the Cerrado and one in an Atlantic Forest fragment in central-western Brazil. In addition to the relevant records, we discuss the negative effects of roadkills, which is a serious issue for the conservation and maintenance of local populations of giant armadillo.

The breeding biology, nest success, habitat and behavior of the endangered Saffron-cowled Blackbird, Xanthopsar flavus (Aves: Icteridae), at an Important Bird Area (IBA) in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Mohr,Luciane R. da Silva; Périco,Eduardo; Fonseca,Vanda S. da Silva; Mohr,Alexsandro R..
ABSTRACT The Saffron-cowled Blackbird, Xanthopsar flavus (Gmelin, 1788), is a globally vulnerable icterid endemic to grasslands and open areas, and a priority species for research and conservation programs. This contribution provides information on the population size, habitat, behavior, breeding biology and nest success of X. flavus in two conservation units (CUs) in Viamão, state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil: the Environmental Protection Area Banhado Grande, and the Wildlife Refuge Banhado dos Pachecos, classified as an “Important Bird Area”. Searches for X. flavus were carried out mainly in open areas, the type of habitat favored by the species. Outside the breeding season individual behavior was recorded by the ad libitum method; during the breeding...
