Spawning of migratory fish species between two reservoirs of the upper Uruguay River, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Reynalte-Tataje,David A.; Nuñer,Alex P. O.; Nunes,Michele C.; Garcia,Valquíria; Lopes,Carolina A.; Zaniboni-Filho,Evoy.
This study investigated the migratory fish spawning within the reservoirs of the Machadinho and Itá dams (upper Uruguay River, Brazil) and its relationship to environmental variables. Sampling was conducted in the lotic region of the river in two sites between the dams' reservoirs: Uruguay (main river) and Ligeiro (tributary). Sampling included nine consecutive reproductive periods (RP) spanning the period from 2001 to 2010 and was conducted at night on the water surface using cylindrical-conical plankton nets (0.5 mm mesh); environmental variables were also recorded. The spawning of the migratory species Salminus brasiliensis, Prochilodus lineatus, and Steindachneridion scriptum was registered: S. brasiliensis and P. lineatus spawned in the tributary...

Turning Water into Carbon: Carbon sequestration vs. water flow in the Murray-Darling Basin AgEcon
Schrobback, Peggy; Adamson, David; Quiggin, John C..
Large scale forest plantations in the Murray-Darling Basin may be embraced as a carbon sequestration mechanism under a Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme. However, increased tree plantation will be associated with reduced inflows to river systems because of increased transpiration, interception and evaporation. Therefore, an unregulated change in land management is most likely to have a dramatic impact on the water availability. This will exacerbate the impacts of climate change projected in the Garnaut Review. This paper examines the implications of unrestricted changes in land use. These results should suggest the true costs to society from carbon sequestration by determining the tradeoffs between timber production and agricultural products.

Mapping, organic matter mass and water volume of a peatland in Serra do Espinhaço Meridional Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Campos,José Ricardo da Rocha; Silva,Alexandre Christófaro; Vidal-Torrado,Pablo.
Peatlands form in areas where net primary of organic matter production exceeds losses due to the decomposition, leaching or disturbance. Due to their chemical and physical characteristics, bogs can influence water dynamics because they can store large volumes of water in the rainy season and gradually release this water during the other months of the year. In Diamantina, Minas Gerais, Brazil, a peatland in the environmental protection area of Pau-de-Fruta ensures the water supply of 40,000 inhabitants. The hypothesis of this study is that the peat bogs in Pau-de-Fruta act as an environment for carbon storage and a regulator of water flow in the Córrego das Pedras basin. The objective of this study was to estimate the water volume and organic matter mass in...

Evapotranspiration and crop coefficient of cucumber in greenhouse AGRIAMBI
Blanco,Flávio F.; Folegatti,Marcos V..
The evapotranspiration (ETc) and crop coefficient (Kc) of cucumber in a greenhouse were determined during the winter-spring season in Piracicaba, SP, Brazil. Crop was irrigated with water of three different levels of salinity: S1 = 1.5, S2 = 3.1 and S3 = 5.2 dS m-1. Electrical conductivity of S1 was obtained only by addition of fertilizers, as fertigation was used, and the S2 and S3 levels in addition to fertilizers received magnesium sulphate, calcium chloride and sodium chloride. Cucumber seedlings, cv. Hokushin, were grafted on squash, transplanted on beds in double rows and directed vertically with a single stem. Irrigation was performed when soil matric potential reached -30 kPa, which was determined by the mean matric potential at 0.15 and 0.30 m...

Soil erosion fragility assessment using an impact model and geographic information system Scientia Agricola
Jorge,Luiz Alberto Blanco.
A study was taken in a 1566 ha watershed situated in the Capivara River basin, municipality of Botucatu, São Paulo State, Brazil. This environment is fragile and can be subjected to different forms of negative impacts, among them soil erosion by water. The main objective of the research was to develop a methodology for the assessment of soil erosion fragility at the various different watershed positions, using the geographic information system ILWIS version 3.3 for Windows. An impact model was created to generate the soil's erosion fragility plan, based on four indicators of fragility to water erosion: land use and cover, slope, percentage of soil fine sand and accumulated water flow. Thematic plans were generated in a geographic information system (GIS)...

Effect of water flow rate and feed training on "pacamã" (Siluriforme: Pseudopimelodidae) juvenile production Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Luz,R.K.; Santos,J.C.E.; Pedreira,M.M.; Teixeira,E.A..
The effects of different water flow rates and feed training on the production of "pacamã" Lophiosilurus alexandri juveniles were evaluated. In the first experiment, nine day post-hatch larvae (n= 2,400) were stocked at a density of 5 larvae/L. Different water flow (F) rates were tested: F1 = 180; F2 = 600; F3 = 1,300; and F4 = 2,600mL/min. Artemia nauplii were offered as food during the first 15 days of active feeding. In the second experiment for feed training, 720 juveniles (total length of 22.2mm) were stocked at a density of 1.5 juveniles/L. A water flow rate similar to F1 was used. The use of extruded dry diet was tested, and feed training was done with and without other enhanced flavors (Artemia nauplii or Scott emulsion). The water flow rates did...
