Allelopathic effects of orange (Citrus sinensis L.) peel essential oil Acta Botanica
Ribeiro,Jose Pedro Nepomuceno; Lima,Maria Inês Salgueiro.
Crop weeds are the main problem in agriculture, causing a worldwide annual loss of about US$95 billion. The principal method for control is the use of synthetic herbicides. The continued use of these products increases crop costs, reduces crop quality, and leaves toxic residues in the environment, which are a threat to human and livestock health. Therefore, there is a demand for environmentally friendly methods of weed control. The use of allelopathic compounds from crop residues is an alternative. Orange is one of the biggest crops in the world, and its cultivation generates large amounts of residues. There is strong evidence of bioactivity in orange peel essential oil. Therefore, the objective in this work was to verify the allelopathic proprieties of...

Temporal expression of the sor1 gene and inhibitory effects of Sorghum bicolor L. Moench on three weed species Acta Botanica
Santos,Roseane Cavalcanti dos; Ferraz,Gabriela de Morais Guerra; Albuquerque,Manoel Bandeira de; Lima,Liziane Maria de; Melo Filho,Péricles de Albuquerque; Ramos,Alessandra de Rezende.
The temporal expression of gene sor1 and the inhibitory effect of Sorghum bicolor L. Moench against weeds were studied by semiquantitative polymerase chain reaction and intercropping management, respectively. To quantify sor1 expression, seeds were sown in pots and RNA was collected from the roots at 5, 10, 15, 20 and 30 days after emergence (DAE). In the inhibition assay, cotton and three weeds were evaluated during single cropping and during intercropping with S. bicolor. The assay was completely randomized, with eight replications. We found early expression of sor1 in most S. bicolor accessions by 5 DAE, and a gradual reduction thereafter. Only one of the accessions showed sor1 expression up to 30 DAE. In the inhibition assay, the most significant...

Morphological analysis and DNA methylation in Conyza bonariensis L. cronquist (Asteraceae) phenotypes Bragantia
Paula,Juliana Maria de; Pinto-Maglio,Cecília Alzira Ferreira; Pinto,Luciana Rossini.
ABSTRACT The species Conyza bonariensis (L.) cause losses in agriculture due to their invasive capacity and resistance to herbicides like glyphosate. The species of this genus exhibit phenotypic plasticity, which complicates their identification and characterization. Thus, experiments were performed with 2 extreme C. bonariensis phenotypes (called broad leaf and narrow leaf) in greenhouse conditions and in the laboratory, in order to verify if the morphological differences among these phenotypes are a genetic character or result from environmental effects. In addition to the comparative morphological analysis, assessment of DNA methylation profile was performed to detect the occurrence, or not, of differences in the epigenetic level. The morphological...

Quezado Duval,A.M.; Henz,G.P.; Paz-Lima,M.L.; Medeiros,A.R.; Miranda,B.E.C.; Pfenning,L.H.; Reis,A.
Myrothecium roridum and M. verrucaria are two plant pathogenic species causing foliar spots in a large number of cultivated plants. This paper aims to study the causal agents of foliar spots in vegetable crops (sweet pepper, tomato and cucumber), ornamental plants (Spathiphyllum wallisii, Solidago canadensis, Anthurium andreanum, Dieffenbachia amoena) and a solanaceous weed plant (Nicandra physaloides). Most of the isolates were identified as M. roridum; only the isolate 'Myr-02' from S. canadensis was identified as M. verrucaria. All the isolates were pathogenic to their original plant hosts and also to some other plants. Some fungicides were tested in vitro against an isolate of M. roridum and the mycelial growth recorded after seven days. Fungicides...

The importance of weeds as melliferous flora in central Chile Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Grimau,Lissette; Gómez,Miguel; Figueroa,Rodrigo; Pizarro,Rodrigo; Núñez,Gabriel; Montenegro,Gloria.
The use of native flora by Apis mellifera L. in Chile has been demonstrated in many studies; however, certain species that are viewed as weeds contribute extensively to the floral composition of honey. A total of 92 honey samples from the Libertador General Bernardo O'Higgins region in Chile were analyzed to determine which weeds are most important in honey production and which are most preferred by melliferous bees. Their relative contributions to the pollen fraction of each honey sample were also determined using melissopalynological tests in accordance with Chilean regulation (NCh2981.Of2005; Ministerio de Agricultura. 2006) to evaluate the botanical origins of the honey samples. Species considered weeds were classified according to their importance in...

Vegetation changes after 15 years of abandonment of crop fields in the Pampas region (Argentina) Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Boccanelli,Silvia; Pire,Eduardo; Lewis,Juan.
Agriculture has been practised in the Argentine Pampa region for more than a century. This long history of disturbance has strongly modified the native vegetation of the region. Some original species have disappeared or its area has been remarkably reduced. The objective was to evalúate vegetation changes over time after the abandonment of agriculture practice. Our hypothesis was that over time vegetation in this region will evolve towards a "flechillar" (Stipa spp. community) similar to the original vegetation. The experiment was conducted at Zavalla (Santa Fe) Argentina (33° 01' S, 60° 53' W and 50 m.a.s.1.). Vegetation evolution was studied during 15 years (1982-1997) after abandonment, considering four initial crop situations (i.e. wheat, soybean,...

Competition with spreading dayflower (Commelina diffusa L.) can affect the agronomic characteristics and mineral content of common bean grains Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Gomes,Lidiane dos Santos; Pin Dalvi,Leandro; Colodete Altoé,Sabrina; Rocha,Leonardo José Frinhani Noia da; Oliveira,Fabio Luiz de.
Abstract The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of the presence of Commelina diffusa weeds on the agronomic characteristics and mineral content of bean grains (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). The experiments were conducted using a completely randomized design with five replications in a greenhouse. The treatments consisted of two bean cultivars (BRS Ametista and BRS Estilo) grown in the presence and absence of the weeds. The weeds affected the agronomic and mineral characteristics of the varieties; caused a decrease in the number of leaves; reduced the chlorophyll content in the leaves; and reduced the nitrogen, phosphorus and iron contents in the grains. Competition with spreading dayflower did not cause significant effects on the stem diameter...

Pollen dispersal and deposition in an agroecosystem at Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina Darwiniana
Madanes,Nora; Fernández,Celina A.
The aim of this study is to analyze factors and mechanisms involved in dispersal and deposition of airborne pollen captured with Tauber type traps in a 20 x 20 m plot of Helianthus annus cultivation and accompanying weeds and to investigate the relation of these processes with the vegetation structure and dynamics from cultivation to its senescence over a 14 week period. Weekly samples obtained with pollen traps showed a significant change in the deposition due to a filter effect and dispersal patterns due to source variations during the time elapsed. A conceptual and interpretative model for both processes and its relation to pollen sources is proposed. Our results showed that in the study site, the leaves development of Helianthus annus produced a pollen...
